To think at 31 my friend isn’t too old to be having a baby

My lovely friend has recently started ttc she’s worried she’s too old and she’s going to struggle with her pregnancy due to her age. I’ve reassured her best as I can I personally had my two children at 21 and 23 so I personally don’t know what it will be like for her.

Also, how do people know how old everyone else on their post-natal ward was? I couldn't tell you their ages to within a decade, I took absolutely no notice of who else was there - perhaps I was incredibly anti-social?!

@Subordinateclause agreed. Plus you don't know you've guessed their ages right. People always think I'm way younger than I am, so when I was 28 having a baby, I reckon I looked early 20s and from the way I was spoken to by staff, they thought I was young.

Two children in my mid 30's, absolutely fine. They're now in their 30's and having children - it's all good

When I had mine, mid eighties, 31 would have been considered an older mum, but now days, no way.

31 isn’t old! I had my first at 27 and felt Way too young !

Rewis · 04/07/2020 21:36

From the top of my head I cannot really think of many people who were under 30 when they had kids (I mean people in my age group. I'm 30)

I had my first at 29 & am one of the youngest my group of mum friends. It varies from 26-42.

Show her this chart. Fertility does not drop until mid 30s.

I don't think many people are having children before their 30s these days

Give over, of course she isn't.

I had mine at nearly 42, expected to be the oldest mum when school came around & I actually wasn't. Most if the mums gave birth I their 30s & a surprising amount of us in our 40s too. The young mums were actually few & far between
