To expect more choice of slippers from Marks and Spencer?

My OH needs some new joggers so to make the order up to £50 and get free delivery I thought I might get a new pair of slippers as mine look rank having been worn a lot more during lockdown.

I wanted a pair the same as I already have but they have a choice of 6 pairs, none of which are the ones I want, and that's that.

I know it's not prime slipper buying time like the run up to Christmas but surely to only be able to offer a choice of six pairs seems ridiculous.

They've only been open for just over a couple of weeks so what has happened to all their stock?

FlameFartingDragon · 02/07/2020 17:36

YABU there's a freaking pandemic going on which has severely impacted supply chains.

CarlaH · 02/07/2020 17:42

Ooops didn't mean to enable a vote. Hardly worth it.

I'm just surprised that they haven't got a lot of stock left but I forgot that people could buy online.

Feel a bit daft now.

Yes, it baffles me that some shops think nobody needs slippers unless it's December. Slippers are not just for Christmas! Also, why are there always more mules than anything else? Guess I must be in the minority preferring a pair with a proper back to them and decent soles. My current ones are so grannyish but they're all I could find that I liked! 😂

Picklypickles · 02/07/2020 17:52

I had a really hard time finding slippers this winter! I don't want granny-style tartan slippers or those weird hairy boot things and that's all I could find anywhere, no amusing animal themed slippers anywhere so I ended up getting a pair of little pull on fuzzy unicorn slipper-sock type things from B&M, not what I wanted but they only cost a couple of quid.

SqidgeBum · 02/07/2020 17:57

Wow. This is an issue? To people, this is a problem worth spending time thinking about, then spending time going onto MN to post about.

If you want slippers that badly just order them from somewhere else.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 02/07/2020 17:59

Can I just say, I LOVE this thread. After all the threads with political arguments, doom and gloom about schools, TRA nasties, horrible neighbours, CF friends, abusive partners, it really made me laugh to read, AIBU to expect more choice of slippers from M&S!

And YANBU!

It's clearly worth your time posting about it though; always time for a put down, eh?
StrawberrySquash · 02/07/2020 18:13

Yes, you are allowed to be annoyed at trivial things!
I think a lot of orders got cancelled too by stores, and knowing what they would sell all went out the window so stock is a bit unplanned at the moment.

CarlaH · 02/07/2020 18:29

SqidgeBum

So sorry to waste your valuable time.

I have been suitably chastised and will stand in the corner, hands on head and think about what I have done.

I am a highly qualified and experienced secondary teacher. I spent yesterday trying to figure out how to pay my mortgage and feed my kids as I am being forced on early maternity leave from September. It's that or face 300 students a week with no PPE or SD at 32 weeks pregnant and risk a c section and an extremely premature baby. Have you ever tried to feed your family and pay the mortgage on state maternity benefit?

My husband is also losing his job due to covid. Have you ever had to find a job during a pandemic?

If all I had to worry about was M&S slippers I would consider myself an incredibly lucky person. Yes, maybe I was short with you. Maybe you deserve to be annoyed over the selection of slippers in your local M&S. It's mostly jealousy that slippers were something that was a problem for you.

WanderingMilly · 03/07/2020 09:35

Sorry OP that you have had such unkind replies to your question about slippers. Of course it's OK to ponder over trivial things, even though others are having a hard time....the two things are entirely separate issues.

Yes, people are having problems, have lost loved ones and/or jobs and many don't have enough money to feed their families....and it's dreadful. But those things aren't the OP's fault, nor does it mean that the rest of us can't have ordinary, everyday thoughts alongside our worries, fears and compassion for others.

As for slippers, yes there does seem to be a shortage of decent ones...not just M&S either. However, with many of us at home it could be that we're all wearing more slippers at the moment. I've bought cheap pairs from Sainsbury's and have just bought my 3rd pair as I've worn out 2 pairs completely. So that might have something to do with the answer to your question....

reinacorriendo · 03/07/2020 09:43

This is the sort of thing my Nan would be aghast about.

Love it. Can we see if it can make PMQ today, Keir Stammer looks like he knows a thing or too about comfort he might be the one to raise it or Chris Whitty looks like he’d have a solid sole with a warm lining.

Is not because it summer season it’s not quite switched for autumn/winter there is a poor choice? They’ve still got all their warm stock to get rid of?

Mamette · 03/07/2020 09:49

I was just thinking the same yesterday when hunting online, there are no slippers to be had anywhere at this time of year!

@SqidgeBum sorry for troubles but none of that is the OP’s fault or problem.

Start your own, more worthy Hmm , thread if this isn’t for you.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/07/2020 09:53

I always do my M&S orders on click and collect so I don't have to pay for postage, but I live about a mile from a Simply Food and don't mind having to take them back for returns as its another chance to see if there are any good reductions.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/07/2020 09:56

These are my favourite slippers. I know they're quite fugly and expensive, but they're good quality, durable enough to wear outside and cosy warm without being too hot in summer.

sonjadog · 03/07/2020 10:03

My Mum was talking to me about the lack of stock in M&S just this morning. I was wondering if it is a sign that they are struggling financially? I haven't lived in the UK so not up to date on M&S news, but I think there has been some talk of them being in financial difficulties previously? I hope these last few months doesn't finish them off.

Justgivemesomepeace · 03/07/2020 10:05

Hang on! Have the rules changed? Are we only allowed to talk about serious issues? I lost my job in March so I've been trying to find a job during a pandemic and wondering how the hell I'm going to sort out my finances if I cant get anything soon, but Im also happy to talk about slippers and not rant rudely at people.
If you are so offended at a thread about slippers, go and find a thread you do want to engage with.

Anyway back to slippers. I like a pair with good sole that I can nip to the bins in. I'm just wearing my flip flops a lot at the moment though. I have never noticed the lack of slipper choice in summer. Probably because people know I love slippers and I get about 3 pairs every christmas. I'll be keeping my eye out in the shops now.

Roselilly36 · 03/07/2020 10:07

I have just had some slippers delivered from M&S, they are certainly bigger than I expected for a size 6. I am keeping the though. There was a good choice when I brought mine OP. I hope you get a suitable pair. I love my slippers, I often buy from Totes online shop.

sonjadog · 03/07/2020 10:12

I have old birkenstock (but much cheaper) shoes that I use for popping out to the bins, wandering around the garden, walking the dog up the road and back.

And then I also have these glorious slippers that I got at a market years ago. I have put them on for WFH every morning these past months....

TheFaerieQueene · 03/07/2020 10:16

I just use a pair of havianas in the summer. Much nicer than fuddy duddy old slippers.

I think you're confused about the purpose of mumsnet. It's literally a discussion forum for people to chat about shit.
Mamette · 03/07/2020 10:23

@sonjadog those are gorgeous! 😍

bridgetreilly · 03/07/2020 10:24

I wonder what you think the optimum number of slipper options would be, OP. I think six is quite a lot, personally, but I am not a great slipper-wearer. When I was unexpectedly taken into hospital last year, my mum had to go and buy me some specially.

Anyway, have you had a look at Moshulu? They always seem to have plenty of lovely slippers on sale.
