To return a dress i will wash

Hi,
I bought a dress from a well-known clothes shop in my usual size.
Ofcourse with the virus rules, we cant try clothes on so I bought it yesterday.
I tried it on this morning and it fits me terribly - much too big on the shoulders and very bulky.

However, I took it off after i tried it on and noticed it had a lipstick stain (very small but noticeable)
What do i do?
Do i wash it?

It cost £40 so dont fancy keeping an ill-fitted dress for that price

Yes it must have been from me since I didnt notice it before I will get a babywipe on it

I hate it when I try on clothes and the previous shopper has left foundation or lipstick on the clothes.

You should really have tried on without make-up especially as you’re at home.

Last year I bought a dress from John Lewis that came with blood stains. If you can get the lipstick off, good, but I imagine you'd get the refund regardless!

If they pay the slightest amount of attention they'll know you've washed it and can refuse to accept the return.

Not necessarily, I wouldn't accept it back if I noticed lipstick or foundation. It has to be returned in a resellable condition.

donate the dress to a charity/ food bank and be grateful that you only have this problem to think about from the virus.
rather than how to plan a distanced funeral for example.
what have you lost really. £40. it's nothing.

So, excuse my ignorance OP, but is the idea when you go shopping in this new post apocalyptic period that you don’t try clothes on in store? You have to take them home and can exchange if unsuitable?

If so, you can take it back surely?

If you damaged it, you can’t return it.

@PuppyMonkey most stores are keeping their changing rooms closed for the time being. So unless you're like that woman in the other thread who the OP saw taking her clothes off and trying on the dress outside the store you can't really try anything on before purchasing it

If you buy online which I do 99% of the time, the return forms tell you to return the item unworn in a saleable condition.

so if it's covered in make up or has a mark you risk having your refund withheld.

Surely it’s should be just the same as if you had tried it on in the shop. It doesn’t fit - you wouldn’t have bought it even if you did get lipstick on it while trying it on - they would not have forced you to buy it would they? So return it. It is not our fault we can no longer try stuff on in shops. That’s what I think anyway.

they might examine it when you return it and query any marks. Or they might not. Depends on how fussy they are.

As pp said, baby wipe or make up wipe will bring it straight off!

@Allywill it's not the same at all. when you buy something you enter into a contract with the shop and they are not obliged legally to give a refund, it's an act of good will , unless the item is faulty.

that is very different from trying on in a shop and leaving it behind.

Obviously everyone should be careful not to soil clothes.
some of the posher shops used to put a scarf in changing rooms to cover your face when trying on clothes to avoid soiling with make up.

Just return it as it is but be careful when trying on stuff next time
