To return a dress i will wash

Hi,
I bought a dress from a well-known clothes shop in my usual size.
Ofcourse with the virus rules, we cant try clothes on so I bought it yesterday.
I tried it on this morning and it fits me terribly - much too big on the shoulders and very bulky.

However, I took it off after i tried it on and noticed it had a lipstick stain (very small but noticeable)
What do i do?
Do i wash it?

It cost £40 so dont fancy keeping an ill-fitted dress for that price

@JinglingHellsBells it’s really not clear from the OP whether OP got the lipstick on the dress or whether it was already there. You’ve assumed the make-up was already there.

vanillandhoney · 30/06/2020 15:46

@Rafflesway

As pp said, baby wipe or make up wipe will bring it straight off!

Of course you can return it! Pleased someone is happy to just throw £40 away like it’s nothing. 🙄

If it's stained, you absolutely cannot return it. You can try, but most retailers will say "err, no, it's been worn".

Wash it and sell it on eBay if you don't want it.

JinglingHellsBells · 30/06/2020 15:48

@Gulabjamoon pretty sure if you read the posts she said she got her lippy on it.

BobFleming · 30/06/2020 15:48

😂 at alexdgr8

I’d just remove the mark and return it 🤷‍♀️

Honeyroar · 30/06/2020 15:49

@Gulabjamoon the op said it’s from her.

Gulabjamoon · 30/06/2020 15:50

Ah my bad. Ignore me.

Rafflesway · 30/06/2020 15:51

So if you catch your lipstick on something you try on in a shop, you would pay for it even if it looked dreadful/didn’t fit?

Somehow I don’t think so! I have worked in retail many moons ago and believe me, far worse accidents happens in the stockroom or even out on the floor which are quickly wiped away and put out for sale and I am talking about expensive clothing items too.

Take it back OP!

Reedwarbler · 30/06/2020 15:51

'Be grateful you only have this problem to think about....'
oh for heavens sake @alexdgr8. I usually ignore this type of comment, but really. We are talking about a dress, not your take on viruses.
Op, I would just take it back and keep your fingers crossed. If they comment you might have to fess up, although I suppose you could deny all knowledge. Would a baby wipe leave a mark also? I think I would just leave it alone.

Cocobean30 · 30/06/2020 15:56

When I worked in retail people used to return smelly, worn and even damp clothes with the tags on or off Confused my manager really had to argue the case with people who tried to return damp clothes from their holiday! People get make up on the clothes all the time in the changing rooms, I would wipe the area but don’t was the whole dress.

GiggyThePomeranian · 30/06/2020 15:57

I work in retail now and I wouldn't accept the return if I noticed. People don't want to buy lipstick marked clothes without a discount, returns need to be given in a resellable condition.

PhotoFinder · 30/06/2020 16:02

I once bought a pencil skirt and wore it all day. In the evening, I could not get the zip back down no matter all the techniques I tried (up and down, trying to see if fabric was stuck in it, I drew on it with pencil, oiled it with Vaseline, etc.). When it still wouldn't come down, I had to cut myself out of it.

I returned it as faulty and got a refund without a battered eyelid. I don't think the staff that deal with the returns care all that much.

SunshineCake · 30/06/2020 16:06

I recently bought a crop top bra thing, washed it after trying it on then discovered someone else's make up on the inside Angry. I'll keep it as too much hassle to return. I think you have to keep as your make up, your mistake.

Euclid · 30/06/2020 16:08

It would be dishonest to send the dress back if you have stained it. If it is a button up dress why didn't you open the buttons and put it on that way when there would be no need to have it near your lipstick? Also why were you wearing lipstick when you were about to try on a dress at home?

SunshineCake · 30/06/2020 16:08

How many of you saying return it would be happy to pay £40 for a soiled dress Hmm?

Just send it back, they'll just dump in the pile of stuff that gets off loaded to TKMaxx at a reduced price.

Tulipstulips · 30/06/2020 16:16

Return it and say you realised it had lipstick on it when you got it home, don’t wear the same colour lipstick when you go back to the shop.

Rafflesway · 30/06/2020 16:17

So then that’s the worse that can happen Giggy! OP has nothing to lose. She’s hardly a master criminal!

However, I am assuming - hopefully correctly - that this is a small lipstick mark which won’t be noticeable at all, in fact should disappear completely, if removed gently with a wipe. Large marks, signs of previous wear, smelly items etc. totally different!

Do you honestly believe you have never had a customer accidentally catch their lipstick on something they were trying in the fitting room?

Laundrywoman · 30/06/2020 16:21

A tip I heard for future reference, op is to put a carrier bag or similar over your head before you try clothes on.

OldmaidLyonsmaid23 · 30/06/2020 16:25

Don't wash it...if you can get off the mark with a wipe please do...if the tag is still intact in situ there shouldn't be a big problem in returning..if the mark doesn't come off there is little proof that the mark wasn't there when you tried it on..once the label is removed there is an assumption that it's been worn if there are marks or odours. If you've actually washed the garment it's considered worn and yours!

SunshinePeekingThrough · 30/06/2020 16:26

If you have damaged it then you are not entitled to a refund

MarshaBradyo · 30/06/2020 16:27

Don’t wash it. Doesn’t it have a card tag that will be ruined if you do?

I’d send it back

suchclearwater · 30/06/2020 16:28

I wouldn't generally advise putting a plastic bag over your head for any reason....Wink

SmileyClare · 30/06/2020 16:29

Putting carrier bags over your head is a bit dangerous no?

Donate it to a food bank. nice idea but food banks dont want beige denim dresses with lipstick down the front. Grin

namechangetheworld · 30/06/2020 16:33

Fuck me, some of these replies are absurd.
Babywipe it off. Send it back. It isn't "damaged", it has a small stain which can easily be removed by the OP.
I once tried to return a childs dress to a shop which, unbeknownst to me, had a DD shaped chocolate fingerprint on the chest area. The lady behind the desk said that if I could get the fingerprint off I was fine to return it. Went out to the car, got the baby wipes on it, and took it straight back in. All was fine.
