To return a dress i will wash

Hi,
I bought a dress from a well-known clothes shop in my usual size.
Ofcourse with the virus rules, we cant try clothes on so I bought it yesterday.
I tried it on this morning and it fits me terribly - much too big on the shoulders and very bulky.

However, I took it off after i tried it on and noticed it had a lipstick stain (very small but noticeable)
What do i do?
Do i wash it?

It cost £40 so dont fancy keeping an ill-fitted dress for that price

This thread has made my day, especially the suggestion to bag your head when trying on clothes Grin

A year or two ago I ordered an expensive dress online and when it came, it had a lipstick mark on the front.

I returned it (again online) and they were extremely apologetic. Sent a replacement.

That one had a lipstick stain on it too.

I gave up after that.

Having read this thread, I'm starting to understand what happened.

@PuppyMonkey

But in these extraordinary times etc etc when changing rooms are closed and the customer has no choice but to try on at home, surely they’re going to have to accept a lot more refund situations than normal. Otherwise why would anyone buy anything? Confused
Maybe just take care when trying things on if you know you may have to return them? Confused
Dutchesss · 30/06/2020 17:40

It's a lipstick mark, it's not damage. Spot clean carefully with a damp cloth, these things happen and if it comes off it's OK to return. Don't wash it.

GiggyThePomeranian · 30/06/2020 17:40

And people wonder why shops like Oasis go under - because people return stuff they can’t resell...
People seem to think shops will just magic the stain away and swallow the cost, but it all comes off the stores totals.

fairlyplump · 30/06/2020 17:45

How would you feel if you were that next person spending £40 on a lipstick marked dress?

Laundrywoman · 30/06/2020 17:53

@SmileyClare

Putting carrier bags over your head is a bit dangerous no?

Donate it to a food bank. nice idea but food banks dont want beige denim dresses with lipstick down the front. Grin

No, it's not dangerous for a functioning adult to put a carrier bag on their head for a few moments. Smile

Exactly. So many people take the piss when it comes to returns, and then they wonder why so many returns policies are strict!
CharityDingle · 30/06/2020 17:56
@PuppyMonkey most stores are keeping their changing rooms closed for the time being. So unless you're like that woman in the other thread who the OP saw taking her clothes off and trying on the dress outside the store Confused you can't really try anything on before purchasing it Sad
@DieSchottin93 what thread is that, please? Sounds interesting.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 30/06/2020 17:56

I wrote to head office to tell them (truthfully) that the staff was wearing the shop clothes out then hanging them back out to sell, complete with BO and deep sat-in wrinkles.

Just out of interest, what sort of reply did you get?

A year or two ago I ordered an expensive dress online and when it came, it had a lipstick mark on the front. I returned it (again online) and they were extremely apologetic. Sent a replacement. That one had a lipstick stain on it too.

Was it in the same place as the first one? If so, could they have just sent your original one back?

morriseysquif · 30/06/2020 18:04

I think a pillowcase might work better and be more pleasant than a carrier bag

Some make-up is really difficult to shift!

dontdressme · 30/06/2020 18:05

@professionalweirdo I left this bit out because it was a boring enough anecdote as it was, but they told me to keep it - so it definitely wasn't the same dress because I still had the first one! (Long story but it was a gift and was sent from outside the EU so the whole customs thing made it a hassle to send back. They provided great service. The lipstick ended up coming out in the wash, too.)

Happygirl79 · 30/06/2020 18:08

You have admitted that youve stained the dress with makeup
Its yours now
Keep it
Its not the retailers fault that you were silly enough to try it on when wearing makeup and without taking care
Retailers have had a terribly hard time this past few months without you adding to their problems by not taking responsibility for your actions

terrifyingcreature · 30/06/2020 18:13

omg @alexdgr8 needs a chill pill

Send it back! Something like this could have happened when you'd tried it on in the shop and it would be a non-issue. Clothes retailers know that this is a risk they take when they allow people to try clothes on. Whatever they lose in soiled returns they more than make up for in sales ... otherwise they wouldn't be offering returns.

MilerVino · 30/06/2020 18:23

A tip I heard for future reference, op is to put a carrier bag or similar over your head before you try clothes on.

Excellent advice. Do try it with unknown clothing that might be a bit tight and get stuck on your head for the full suffocating effect. Definitely do this when at home on your own as it will make the autopsy report so much fun.

Alternatively, if you don't wish to become a shoe-in for a Darwin award, try on clothes with a clean, make up free face.

shinynewapple2020 · 30/06/2020 19:27

Just return it, they probably won't even look at it. In fact you could be really cheeky and return it saying you'd just noticed it has got lipstick on it GrinGrinGrin

Royalbloo · 30/06/2020 19:39

If you'd have tried it on in a shop and that happened, you'd put it on the "no" rail and wouldn't give it another thought.

Royalbloo · 30/06/2020 19:40

They're not stupid, they know this happens!

StripeyBananas · 30/06/2020 19:44

I am surprised at the dishonesty of some people.

UnhappyMondays · 30/06/2020 19:49

If you wash it they won’t accept it; I remember my friend asking why ages ago in River Island and they said that they have a special way of cleaning it when it’s returned dirty, but if it’s washed then they can’t sell it new.

No idea if that’s still true (or if it has been covered in detail already as haven’t rtft)

Laundrywoman · 30/06/2020 19:51

This thread is hysterical - bring on the smelling salts! Grin

LunchBoxPolice · 30/06/2020 19:59

That isn’t the shop’s problem. If you’ve damaged it then you shouldn’t get a refund. Why should the shop swallow the cost of your carelessness?

LolaDarkdestroyer · 30/06/2020 20:01

Tough shit why should someone else end up paying 40 quid for a dress you've stained and wiped a baby wipe on? Seriously

namechangetheworld · 30/06/2020 20:03

It's not a damaged dress! Do you refer to everything in your laundry bin as damaged?

StripeyBananas · 30/06/2020 20:24

@namechangetheworld

No but I wouldm't send anything from my laundry bin back to the shop and expect a refund.
Honeyroar · 30/06/2020 20:27

It is damaged. Would you buy something in a store covered in lipstick or make up? Of course you wouldn’t, or you’d expect a discount. It’s stained.
