To return a dress i will wash

Hi,
I bought a dress from a well-known clothes shop in my usual size.
Ofcourse with the virus rules, we cant try clothes on so I bought it yesterday.
I tried it on this morning and it fits me terribly - much too big on the shoulders and very bulky.

However, I took it off after i tried it on and noticed it had a lipstick stain (very small but noticeable)
What do i do?
Do i wash it?

It cost £40 so dont fancy keeping an ill-fitted dress for that price

@namechangetheworld

It's not a damaged dress! Do you refer to everything in your laundry bin as damaged?
It is damaged in retail terms.

They can't just bung things in the washing machine and put them out to be sold! If clothing gets damaged in shops it's either sold off as seconds or faultied off and sent back to head office.

Movinghouseatlast · 01/07/2020 06:56

I did this at the start of lockdown! I tried on a (horrible) top from Cos totally forgetting that I was doing a hair dye patch test behind my ear.

£50 totally wasted! I felt a total knob for doing that.

lifestooshort123 · 01/07/2020 07:06

Don't think the OP will be back...

crossstitchingnana · 01/07/2020 07:11

I ordered a dress from H and M and it came with no tags and STUNK of curry and BO. I was horrified. Sent it back and got refunded, was worried they'd think it was me. See? They don't give a fuck

eaglejulesk · 01/07/2020 08:36

Why would you try on clothes at home when wearing lipstick? I buy clothes online all the time and have never got a mark on them (and I've never received any with marks).

It's your fault the mark is there, so no, you can't send it back. Sell it on Ebay if you don't want it.

Heresto2020 · 01/07/2020 08:56

I would suggest trying to wipe it off with a cloth or wipe

In future I’d suggest trying on clothes after a shower with no make up or deodorant

Pollypocket89 · 01/07/2020 09:08

Do people not realise when you return clothes from online shopping they go to a warehouse to be cleaned, repacked and resold? Nobody should be getting a stained dress when they bought it again, it'll be the exception rather than rule

Cadent · 01/07/2020 09:12

@Pollypocket

According to BBC Earth, the vast majority of new returned clothing and shoes ends up in landfill.

Find it hard to understand why so many different opinions here. Or why the OP has never come across the way to behave with this.

If you damage goods bought, they are possibly unfit for resale. So you are not due a refund.

If you manage to remove a small mark and it's not visible, that's okay.

If you return it marked, depending on the store, they may not notice.
If it's a £9.99 item from a cheap shop they probably won't bother to examine it. But if it's a £300 dress they might.

It's your risk when you take back a marked item.

As I mentioned earlier, in some more expensive shops, they provide a scarf (square) in fitting rooms to put across your face to prevent make up getting on clothes.

woodhill · 01/07/2020 09:16

I always try on clothes after a shower but don't put deodorant on as this can mark.

I once tried on a lovely dress but it stank of BO (not mine) so it was sent back

zingally · 01/07/2020 09:19

Just return it. The 18 year old behind the counter probably won't notice, and even if they do, they're unlikely to say anything. It doesn't make any different to them personally.

dontdressme · 01/07/2020 09:21

They don't clean them! Why on earth would they?

Keepwarminthisroom · 01/07/2020 09:28

They don't clean them! Why on earth would they?

To resell? To avoid going into landfill?

Pollypocket89 · 01/07/2020 09:30

They really do. It's what a family member does for a living

They might get rebagged and put back in the stockroom if they're not needed right away, but they're certainly not cleaned! We don't have loads of washing machines sat around ready to clean returned stock Grin

Anything that's returned damaged is either sold as seconds or faultied off and sent back to H/O where I assume it's destroyed or given away to charity/rags.

vanillandhoney · 01/07/2020 09:31

Meant to add, things are steamed, but that doesn't clean them - it's just the equivalent of ironing to get the creases out so things look nice on hangers.

Mawbags · 01/07/2020 09:32

Trying to get my head around anybody being daft enough to try on a frock wearing makeup hahahajahajajajGrin

Pollypocket89 · 01/07/2020 09:34

I'm not referring to in shops, I said things bought online, it's different and yes they really do. I can only speak for where my relative works but they definitely get cleaned, repackaged and resold

TerrapinStation · 01/07/2020 09:35

@shinynewapple2020

Just return it, they probably won't even look at it. In fact you could be really cheeky and return it saying you'd just noticed it has got lipstick on it GrinGrinGrin
By cheeky you mean lying, how old are you that you think that's so hilarious?
vanillandhoney · 01/07/2020 09:36

Shops deal with online returns too.

What you mean is, the place your relative works cleans things. The vast, vast majority do not.

Pollypocket89 · 01/07/2020 09:39

I'm aware of that obviously. As I said originally, I'm talking about things bought online and returned online.

Please don't tell me what I mean, of the two of us, I'm fairly sure only one knows what I mean and it's not you. My relative is over a warehouse that does exactly what I said for numerous retailers so let me assure you, it happens

TheFaerieQueene · 01/07/2020 09:53

All those saying just send it back. How would you feel if you order this dress and there is lipstick on it when it arrives? After all retailers won’t notice the stain, according to you, so they won’t notice it when sending it out to you.
