AIBU to be annoyed at the state of this wall? (Pic attached)

Our lodger moved out not long ago. This is the state they left the spare bedroom wall in.

8 screws in the wall used to hang things plus various sticky pads that have torn the wallpaper; not included are the six screws in the other wall.

First of all, who needs to hang that many things on a small bedroom wall; second of all I don’t remember approving them even screwing into my wall! If I’d been asked about hanging things I’d have said yes - but please use the command strip type things.

Lodger is/was a friend, so gently asked about all the screws and they’ve laughed and said she wanted her room to look homely. Additionally annoyed that she’s then said that I’m redecorating the room anyway so does it matter?

AIBU to think that when you rent a room in someone’s home you don’t need to put this many screws in the wall?

Forgot to attach the pic!

Really hard to see in the pic, but looks like they are just pushpins or takker pins? In which case cant they just be pulled out?

What did you put in the contract regarding this? If you expressly said nothing to be screwed into or affixed to the wall then yep, she's done wrong. Otherwise isn't it fair wear and tear? Holes are very easily filled, harder to patch up with wallpaper of course which is why rented properties are usually painted

steppemum · 30/06/2020 10:49

bit of an over reaction. The wall really doesn't look that bad Command strips don't work on wallpaper, so that wouldn't have worked anyway.

mineofuselessinformation · 30/06/2020 10:50

Did you tell her you were going to re-decorate?

BalanchineBallet · 30/06/2020 10:51

Sorry, couldn’t get worked up. Especially if you’re redecorating anyway.

Borisplums · 30/06/2020 10:53

Life is too short for this! Sorry

VanGoghsDog · 30/06/2020 11:01

Good opportunity to get rid of that ugly wallpaper.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 30/06/2020 11:03

I can see the problem, I think I would have tried to cover up as much of that wallpaper too. Wink

Good opportunity to get rid of that ugly wallpaper.
Same thought crossed my mind 😁
JoesExotic · 30/06/2020 11:07

That picture doesn't look too bad at all! I expected carnage, all I see are a few (colour coded) push pins.

RedRed9 · 30/06/2020 11:08

Are they screws though? They don’t look like it.

Notss · 30/06/2020 11:13

@RedRed9 yes, most of them are actual screws

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 30/06/2020 11:14

Have you got a close up pic of the screws? Because it doesn't look that bad from those pics.

Notss · 30/06/2020 11:16

I’m willing to accept I’m being totally unreasonable! Just to clarify tho, I’m not stomping around fuming at the wall paper. I’m more mildly irritated by the lack of respect for property.

gotothecooler · 30/06/2020 11:19

It depends on what was agreed. I'm guessing nothing as you haven't mentioned terms.

So if she is BU for assuming she could, YABU for assuming she wouldn't.

viques · 30/06/2020 11:20

My first thought was why have you used wrapping paper as wall paper? I think if I was living in that room I would have to hang stuff over as much of the wall as possible to hide the paper.

Sorry OP. I understand why you are pissed off, she shouldn't have used screws or sticky stuff that damaged the wallpaper, but actually, if it makes you redecorate then she has done you a favour.

Ellisandra · 30/06/2020 11:21

I’m in the thank goodness you’re redecorating camp! I’d have put up multiple pictures to hide that wallpaper too Grin

I don’t actually understand the push pins - how would they even go into the wall? Are you walls made of cheese?! Confused

I can see torn strips of wallpaper on the right of the photo though - so I understand your annoyance, that’s out of order. Clutching at straws - unless you’d said, “hang what you like, I’ll be redecorating anyway”?

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 30/06/2020 11:22

First of all, who needs to hang that many things on a small bedroom wall to be honest if I was renting a room with that wallpaper I’d want to hang up as many things as possible to cover it! If you’re planning to have another lodger in that room I’d suggest redecorating it very neutrally

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 30/06/2020 11:26

That would piss me off foo

madcatladyforever · 30/06/2020 11:30

I'd be very annoyed, at least my lodger asked if she could put screws in and I said no. She sulked for a week.

welldonesquirrels · 30/06/2020 11:41

YANBU, just because the wallpaper isn't to everyone's taste doesn't mean the lodger has carte blanche to trash it.

RedRed9 · 30/06/2020 11:43

To be fair, when she moved out she should have made the wall good - or at least taken the pins/screws out!

That would annoy more than her doing it in the first place. It’s disrespectful of her to assume it’s ok for you to spend your own time essentially clearing up her mess.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 30/06/2020 11:54

I do agree that she should have asked and should have made it good before moving out- so YANBU at all really I just got distracted by the wallpaper Grin if you take in another lodger make sure all the small details like whether or not they can hang things the walls are covered before they move in, maybe even worth writing up a list of things like that so that you have it in writing and they can refer to it instead of having it ask.

nextnamex · 30/06/2020 11:58

yanbu, in every rented property I've been in you havent been allowed to screw things into the walls without permission

nextnamex · 30/06/2020 11:58

really surprised so many have voted yabu
