Facebook page inciting hate

Ineedsleeprightnow · 28/06/2020 23:15

Posting here for traffic.

We live in a small village on the edge of a small town. We are one of a minority of black families.

The local community spotted page (anything and everything goes page) is posting mainly anti blm stuff multiple times per day! I can see this is done by the clearly racist mods to whip up hatred and incite hatred in the responses. I’d sent in some stuff to explain blm but they’ve refused to post. Some of the response to the posts are just awful.

I know l should just delete the page but I’m raging and FB never does anything! I’m just feeling very vulnerable and although we’ve lived here a long time, despite a couple of issues it’s been fine. I’m just now very aware of how much some people on the town clearly don’t like black people. I’m worried for my teen boys!

Any advice on how to deal with this page? Would the local police be able to do anything?

Reading this I'm truly disgusted about people's behaviour. On our local 'page' there have been lots of conversations where people have spoken out to support the BLM campaign and made it clear that the push for change (and demand for basic human rights) will benefit us all.
I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. X

Singlebutmarried · 28/06/2020 23:32

Report it.

Our local spotted page was doing similar and got taken down

It’s back under a slightly different name but I’m pretty sure it’ll be taken down again. Think this will be the third time

Ineedsleeprightnow · 28/06/2020 23:36

I’ve been reporting to FB but they aren’t doing anything. I’ve had a look at other spotted pages and can’t see anything like ours. It’s truly vile and some of the posts are getting hundreds of likes and hateful comments. I’m not sleeping either, trying to work from home whilst homeschooling too!

Could the police do anything does anyone know?

Sorry, I don't have any practical help as it sounds like you're already on it, but Flowers that you're having to deal with this crap.

Lots of good luck in getting the FB sorted.

Smallsteps88 · 28/06/2020 23:41

Tbh I’d go to the police with this shit. FB are doing fuck all about it. Bring your local MP into it too.

Smallsteps88 · 28/06/2020 23:42

Depends where you are. Some forces have been known to “check people’s thinking” on certain issues. Not sure if that extends to racism though. Worth a shot.

Ineedsleeprightnow · 28/06/2020 23:49

Thanks everyone Flowers

I guess the problem with these spotted pages is that anyone can start them. They are definitely inciting hate! I think I’ll give 101 a ring tomorrow and see what they suggest!

Smallsteps88 · 28/06/2020 23:52

I hope you get a positive response OP. I feel sick with how confident these people are. It’s scary.

SusieOwl4 · 28/06/2020 23:57

I just wanted to say I reported a poster on Facebook for a very racist remark. They did nothing . Just said block the poster. But that’s not the point is it?

I was shocked

Ineedsleeprightnow · 29/06/2020 00:02

I’ve been very disappointed with FB. They are literally dong nothing!

This isn’t a small group either, despite only being a small market town the group has over 30,000 members, so quite a big audience when compared to other spotted pages.

To be clear l have no problem with other opinions but what l am seeing is not opinions but outright hatred and racism!

OP posts:
AtaMarie · 29/06/2020 00:04

That's awful - especially that everyone is joining in, making it look like a consensus. I imagine anyone with an opposing view is too intimidated to post.

So sorry, OP. I'm angry for you.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 29/06/2020 00:11

That's awful. I think whether the police would get involved depends on whether there is incitement to violence. But I would hope your local MP would be onto it if you emailed them, giving some examples. They probably don't have any actual powers to shut it down but might shame the owner of the page into taking it down.

Ineedsleeprightnow · 29/06/2020 00:21

Good idea about the MP, thanks. l have screenshots of everything they’ve posted so giving examples won’t be an issue.

@Ineedsleeprightnow

If it’s racist then I certainly understand your anger and would never condone this. I am sorry that you are having to deal with it ❤️ As for what you can do your best bet is to log it with the police and go from there.

As for the organisation Black Lives Matter, I do disagree with. Is this what it is in relation to as you mention trying to explain blm?

hatemyselfrightnow · 29/06/2020 00:27

It is outrageous, isn't it? Say that a woman is an adult human female and the police come to check your thinking." When it is racism they do sweet F all. Sad

to the OP, am sorry you dealing with this right now. some people use FB to be a bellend Flowers

PercyPiginaWig · 29/06/2020 00:28

So do black lives not matter to you @5wandh or have I misunderstood?

@Ineedsleeprightnow try your local police and check if there is a race equality organisation in your local area, where I live there is one.
So sorry you've found locals unsupportive and worse racist.

5wandh · 29/06/2020 00:36

@PercyPiginaWig

You have clearly misunderstood. How do you get from me saying that I disagree with the organisation to that meaning not caring about black people?

Ineedsleeprightnow · 29/06/2020 00:46

The stuff l sent the page was purely anti racism material so nothing mentioning Blm specifically, l would never push my views on others.

They refused to post it on the page anyway which is why l sent it, to see if they would. I guess l got my answer!

OP posts:
Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/06/2020 00:54

Leave it for a week and take as many screen shots as you possible can

Then report the cunts

I’m Appalled and Disgusted

Our page locally has been very supportive in this issue

I am appalled and yet not even surprised you are facing this

5wandh · 29/06/2020 01:03

@Ineedsleeprightnow

I believe you likely did sadly with that being the case. I know this won’t help too much right now but please know that although the vocal ones may appear large in numbers, it is not going to be views that are held by the majority. If you ever need someone to talk to about it feel free to private message me, I’ll be there for you 💐

AliSxo · 29/06/2020 01:24

I'd be tempted to start a new spotted page full of positivity and local information. I'm sorry you've had to read all of these peoples views and they won't post yours. I'd maybe even go to the local newspaper and ask why they won't post your articles but happy to post anti-BLM? Xx

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/06/2020 02:29

You could publicise the page and screenshot to anti racism groups and let them storm in

It’s disgusting , and they really deserve some nasty shit coming their way

Twillow · 29/06/2020 03:04

I strongly support BLM. I have a friend who posts very political stuff on her page about it and frankly it even turns me off. The most effective thing I have read recently, though, was a parent who just posted a list of examples of racism she and her family had encountered. It was overt racism encountered in everyday situations from so-called 'ordinary' people. Other customers in a restaurant. A man in a suit on a train. It was truly shocking and saddening.
It doesn't of course deal with systemic institutional racism, but its the drip-down effect of it, I suppose.
Could you do something like that?

CinnabarRed · 29/06/2020 03:50

I’m really sorry that this is happening - from the FB page in the first place, to all the likes that hideous posts are receiving, to FB’s pathetic non-response, to the fact you’re expected to educate ignorant people about racism. All of it’s awful and I’m really sorry.

DeeCeeCherry · 29/06/2020 05:01

Racist community group pages & far right groups are numerous on FB. I have a mind FB will have to address this soon. They've lost a lot of advertising revenue due to their refusal to moderate race hate speech and groups. As of last night, $56 billion wiped off shares value. Coca Cola is the latest to pull advertising. Some info here
