To think it’s dumb that international holidays are being encouraged in the middle of a pandemic

AIBU to think is probably the part of the coronavirus pandemic that will lead to WTF reactions in future history books? A world clinging desperately to its globalized ways and unwilling to countenance altering them even in the midst of a crisis like this.

European countries have just gone through months of brutal economic and social lockdowns, with the goal of suppressing the virus. They’ve just experienced, at a huge cost, what it’s like to have the virus slowly and imperceptibly land within their borders via air travel.

And yet, just as the virus starts circulating at low levels, they all decide to open up their borders to each other again, in these supposedly safe ‘air corridors’. Enroute to their destinations, their citizens flock to public transport, then to busy airports and planes, where they sit for hours in the midst of other passengers, then on to their destinations, where they mix with other citizens coming in from all over the world too, in social and alcohol-fuelled conditions. In the meantime, governments - like the UK - have vowed that any outbreaks in other countries will mean that returning tourists may have to suddenly quarantine for two weeks upon their return home. It’s a panicked and volatile strategy, subject to a monitoring of the spread of the virus in multiple other countries. Of course it’s bound to go wrong.

TLDR: close the borders. Internationalism can wait.

The queues ( if any) will be socially distanced. Pretty much every aspect you’ve mentioned is no different from a large supermarket shopping experience atm. Oh and transport isn’t bus for us it’s a car. Which like many others we will be driving to a house with a private pool.

It is different to a large supermarket as people usually won't go to the supermarket if feeling really ill. It's easy enough for most people to get a delivery or for someone to drop their food off. A lot of people will still travel if they can get out of bed as they won't want to lose their holiday.

doyounothavegoogle · 28/06/2020 08:27

Absolutely drives me bonkers the assumption that everyone going on a plane will do it only to go on holiday

Absolutely agree with this. People travel between countries for all sorts of reasons.

We are in France - very low rates of infection in our department throughout.

MIL in UK - thus far the quarantine rule has made it impossible to visit. She is in her 90s and lives alone.

We also have family in Germany who have been trying to WFH - would have been lovely for us to be able to take the GC off their hands to help out.

Think about global travel before and after this pandemic

Thing about how we interact in public places now , and how we used to

I can’t see the risk being quite as high as
(A) it will be cleaner
(B) we will all hand wash and follow rules
(C) people who are sick clearly won’t travel
(D) many people won’t travel , business travel is almost at a standstill and most people will stay home
(E) we know it’s most transmitted via prolonged contact And viral load rather than surfaces

I have to travel this weekend , as it’s parental contact we agreed and technically - we can

But the airport and planes will be a very different place compared to say Dec 2019

@awishes

It's ridiculous and it would have been such an opportunity to put some money back in to the UK economy by encouraging people to holiday here.
Except nobody in UK holiday destinations wants tourists. And people remember being told to stay away and all the insults etc. There are many places I would have quite happily gone to that I wouldn't bother now.

I personally wouldn't go abroad this year but.. each to their own. I think what the history books will find ridiculous it's the lockdowns themselves.

BeyondMyWits · 28/06/2020 08:28

Can't go visit my daughter in Swansea yet, and folks are talking about going to Spain.

1066vegan · 28/06/2020 08:29

£1000 spending money just on "bits and bobs" and £1000 on clothes before you go on holiday!!!!!

Really? 😮

Is this a genuine post or a joke? (I'm autistic so don't always recognise jokes).

mrpumblechook · 28/06/2020 08:30

Yeah because we all love driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Not a chance!

You might not want to but plenty of people do every year so it's not the case that you have to fly to visit your mother.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 28/06/2020 08:30

I am amazed that British are being accepted

I’ve been home pretty much since March !! And kids off school too

Not sure we present a huge risk to the
Country we are visiting , really

mrpumblechook · 28/06/2020 08:33

I wondered that too.

MarshaBradyo · 28/06/2020 08:34

When we travel we take the virus with us, NZ let a few in and still they were unlucky enough to be positive.

Ok maybe 1 in 1700 will take it, if that’s still the stat.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 28/06/2020 08:35

Hi @1066vegan...no no joke just what our average family of three would spend on a normal holiday abroad. A week once a year thats all it is. pretty sure its not unusual.

slothbyday · 28/06/2020 08:36

I'm waiting for all the media stories - might play bingo, only a matter of time

Went on holiday, came down with Covid and travel insurance didn't cover medical expenses - cue sad face on the front cover of the tabloid

Went on holiday, behaved like they did in Bournemouth last week. Locals got annoyed. Brits are banned from Benidorm.

Flight from Tenerife to Uk forced to make emergency landing in Spain as brits refuse to wear masks on board...it stops them drinking their vodka

Brits got drunk in Ibiza and failed to exhibit any social distancing. Now got huge spike and overwhelmed hospitals there

Greece bans the brits after they reinfect every country in Europe due to their idiotic behaviours

On the plus side, if all the idiots go abroad will that make the UK holiday destinations better?

We do want to go on holiday, uk or abroad but can't see anywhere we could go where we won't be near the idiots and still have stuff to do with kids....we are using the money we would spend on a holiday on emigration visas!

SusieOwl4 · 28/06/2020 08:36

I don’t get why people are surprised. The government said right at the beginning that lockdown was to reduce the spread so NHS was not overwhelmed .And to flatten the curve . Then we would come out the other end . We are one of the most highly densely populated countries and spread was inevitable really. A lot of people disagreed with lockdown at all . But we won’t know what would have happened it we had not had it at all.

Personally I will not be going abroad this year .I would not like to have covid whilst in a foreign country . But I do think now that we have to live with this unfortunately. But I also think people are ignoring social distancing inside at their peril.

Some people are obviously just going to do what they want now and really don’t care about the consequences. Others will weigh up the risks.

I can't see any of that happening. Social distancing is still being enforced "abroad" you know. Anyone heading to Ibiza hoping the strip is open as usual is going to be sorely disappointed!
heyheyho · 28/06/2020 08:39

The virus is here to start. We have to learn to live with it. Other countries are allowing so why is it so wrong that we are? And no, we don’t have the highest rate in Europe. Stop saying this lie just to suit your agenda

Aragog · 28/06/2020 08:39

You see, I see going on holiday to a green zone 'safer' than going to the soon to be opened bars.

I've been really careful due to being vulnerable but I don't think I'm overly concerned about getting a Eurostar train or a short flight to somewhere classed as green at the end of the month. Due to the filters flights aren't particularly bad, especially if not sitting face to face with strangers. Airports can be fine if not too busy and even mid summer you can normally find a quiet spot to sit for half an hour before boarding.

We don't go in for sitting on crowded beaches here or abroad, ever. We don't go to crowded bars, etc. We usually have a nice villa or apartment, our own pool, car hire and enjoy quite calm relaxed activities not surrounded by tons of people. We also spend most of the time outdoors and not within 2m if anyone else.

MarshaBradyo · 28/06/2020 08:39

Demand has been reported to have increased sharply, if you wanted to kick start travel industry imposing a short quarantine then lifting it seems a good way to do it.

Thinkingabout1t · 28/06/2020 08:43

Yup. Totally insane. And finally instituting quarantine for arrivals in the UK, after giving the virus a free run here for months. We’ve got the worst death rate in Europe, not surprisingly given our government’s incompetent, ideology-driven response (eg keeping inefficient privatised supply system for PPE while refusing EU offers).

I think the poor old tourist destinations are so desperate for income that they’re risking their lives for the economy. And our own government knows we’re already so massively infected that we pose more harm to other countries than they do to us.

Coronabegone · 28/06/2020 08:44

What a load of nonsense! So your saying people who have CV would travel although they wouldn't be covered by insurance?

Really?

Honestly some people cannot accept that people will travel after risk assessment! They think anyone that does something other than stays locked indoors is a complete idiot!

Aragog · 28/06/2020 08:45

You don't have to fly to visit your mother in France. You could get a boat/drive

In terms of Covid, why would a boat or train be better than a plane?

BabyLlamaZen · 28/06/2020 08:47

I agree. I know it's to support economy but it does seem overly ridiculous. I dont get who all these people are who are booking up flights?

My family is full of big travellers and we are yearning to go abroad, but we definitely wont be! Makes me think that those who are, are also the type to not SD properly Confused

BabyLlamaZen · 28/06/2020 08:47

And yes, some of it will be those visiting family, but the great majority?

Holiday booking sites are packed!

oblada · 28/06/2020 08:49

Aragog - I'd say driving through the tunnel to France for instance would be pretty good as you don't get out of your car really so no social distancing issue. I think we may have done that in other circumstances. As it is I am 38weeks pregnant so won't be travelling right now (and even after baby arrives it'll be a while before we can do very long drives like this), just hoping for family to be able to come over.

mrpumblechook · 28/06/2020 08:49

What a load of nonsense! So your saying people who have CV would travel although they wouldn't be covered by insurance?

Why would they not be covered? Do you think they would admit having symptoms before travelling?! If they hadn't done a test who would know?

BabyLlamaZen · 28/06/2020 08:49

Do people really want to get coronavirus on holiday? Hmm
