to ask if this type of dining table exists

Long story short a dining table that extends width ways instead of getting longer?

We've just had our offer accepted for a new house (yay!) So in lockdown boredom I am already thinking of what needs doing, buying etc.

The dining area is square but also a through way between the front room and kitchen. So a 6 seater dining table sits nicely on one side half of the room, and allows you to walk through into the kitchen and also access the staircase.

I want an extending table as like to entertain, but there's no room for extra length, it needs to be one that extends width ways into the room. Any ideas? :)

Eh?

The3Ls · 27/06/2020 16:32

Called 'flip top' seen them as 4 seater not sure if bigger. If not big bit of pile wood on top with a cloth as needed?

SoupDragon · 27/06/2020 16:33

Maybe a circular one would do what you want?

FenellaMaxwell · 27/06/2020 16:34

Get a normal extending table and just turn it round when you want to extend it. Confused

overthinker91 · 27/06/2020 16:36

@noteverythingisblackandwhite

Sorry hard to describe. Basically extendable dining tables tend to be a rectangle that extends into a longer rectangle. There isn't space in the room for a table that extends lengthways (i.e. gets longer) so looking for something that gets wider

You want one that twists and unfolds, I think. They aren't that easy to find, but we used to have one and it was great.

This Dwell one has the same mechanism, though it gets longer not wider - but if you can imagine the top unfolding along the long edge rather than the short one, you get the idea.

Have a look at extending console dining tables.

When folded they are a small, neat piece of furniture but could be opened out and placed beside your regular dining table when entertaining. Or maybe buy two of them as a matching pair and only open the second one when needed.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 27/06/2020 16:41

Mmm, wouldn't that make a bigger area in the centre of it that is unused? (Although I suppose you could stay socially distanced Smile).

overthinker91 · 27/06/2020 16:41

Thank you @quantumweatherbutterfly

That's a start at least :)

AdaColeman · 27/06/2020 16:43

Do you mean something like a square drop leaf gate legged table @overthinker91? You could have it half open normally, and open the second gate when entertaining.

FadedRed · 27/06/2020 16:43

Try searching for ‘drop leaf dining tables’.

GingerFluffycat · 27/06/2020 16:47

You want one of these:

Expandable circular dining table - I've seen a modern one somewhere (in beech with glass inset panels) but can't for the life of me remember where. I'll do some research and return to the thread with details if I find it.

Be warned, they're expensive!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 27/06/2020 16:50

If you find one, can you let me know?? I want one too. My most probable solution is to ge my brother who is carpenter to make two pieces which can be bolted on then I'll throw a table cloth over it.

GingerFluffycat · 27/06/2020 16:50

ah, sorry - wrong link Blush

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 27/06/2020 16:52

Those expanding circular3tables are so beautiful. Every time I ask my brother to make me one, he gives me Hmm

BackforGood · 27/06/2020 16:59

Ooh, that' s exciting @GingerFluffycat

Our dining table is oval, noramlly, and then when we want to expand, you pull the 2 halves out and a rectangle lifts up into the missle to make it round.
However, wwe inherited it from my parents, who bought it second hand in the 1970s so I've no idea where you could find one other than a stroke of luck in second hand shops.

Your description in your opening post was perfectly clear btw, OP

StrawberrySquash · 27/06/2020 17:02

Sorry OP, not seen any. But you want small rectangle -> big square, not small square -> big rectangle, which is easier to find?

OnlyJoking1 · 27/06/2020 17:04

Ikea used to do a table that was narrow but opened across the length, we’ve got one ours was from Made.com.

randolph78 · 27/06/2020 17:06

I know exactly what you mean. My friend had one year ago. Was about 6 feet long and either about 1.5 or 3 foot wide. I can't find one like that now as the drop leaf ones have the leaf in the way of where your legs would go so often don't work well as an actual narrow table when folder. I think my friend got hers from the shop Cargo but that was literally 20 years ago. Best I can find now is this:

bilbodog · 27/06/2020 17:06

We have a drop leaf oval table which is pushed up to the wall for just 2 of us and pulled out into the room with both leaves out to seat 8.

TheDogsMother · 27/06/2020 17:06

We have one of these. It's a console when not in use then folds out to rectangular dining table. From La Redoute. Is this the sort of thing you are after ?

Sorry couldn't include a link

bookgirl1982 · 27/06/2020 17:07

We have a square table that extends at each end so you can have one leaf or two added, it was from the local oak furniture shop. No reason you couldn't have that width-ways on.

Foobydoo · 27/06/2020 17:17

Just found this @overthinker91
It is expensive though.
