To think it’s just a bit weird to sit on someone else’s garden wall and have a chat

Just that really - looked out of the window earlier and there was a group of probable students having a chat on the pavement outside my house. Two were sat on the garden wall, which is very obviously the garden wall and right in front of the sitting room window (I wasn’t in the room at the time). It’s my wall for sure, and it’s 100+ years old (and will be very expensive to rebuilt when it does eventually crumble. I was planning to go out and water the flowers and gently move them on, but they left after about 15 minutes and before I finished sorting small children out. They didn’t actually do any harm, but AIBU to object to people randomly sitting on my wall?

If it was a one off, I really couldn’t get worked up enough about it to post on here. If they start coming back and doing it regularly, then of course they are BU.

I’m not worked up. Just curious if it would bother other people. I just thought it a bit odd, can’t see myself ever sitting on someone else’s garden wall 🤷‍♀️

And I don’t mind being called Hyacinth, I think there’s a little bit of Hyacinth in all of us!

No, it would not bother me if someone sat on the wall of my driveway that faces the pavement. I suppose if they stopped by every day it might be different!

Eh, it cant be the first time you've seen someone sit on a wall, surely? Bit of a non-issue.

I've seen someone do this on my wall and it wound me right up! She left before I could shoo her away though.

@janaih thank goodness it’s not just me, even if people think it’s a bit batshit. I think part of the problem is it’s a bit wobbly, it’s a conservation area so has to be put back exactly as is, and I wouldn’t sit on it myself for these reasons

I've seen a post on here saying aibu to let my toddler walk on someone's wall and the vast majority said yes, you mustn't go on other people's private property. Depends which way the wind blows I guess!

Kids sitting on walls was definitely a thing when I was young. There were some particularly excellent walls which became prime location for meet ups.

Then the internet came along and spoiled everything...

@deeply - considering I left the old house because kids were constantly playing football against my lounge window I’m pretty sure I’d be more than a little bit Hyacinth if my wall became the local random hangout. Luckily I live on a street with a lot of walls, so the chances are slim

Also I was probably annoyed in part because I was trying to put kids to sleep and they were being loud and obnoxious

People come along and sit on my wall and it annoys me. I ask them to move. It’s not a seat; it’s the front wall of my front garden.

It’s not different to people who protest about having children walk along front walls.

The Parcel Force delivery guy actually sat on my front wall whilst his van was being fixed. It was making our dog bark and go mad. He ignored this and proceeded to get his can of coke and his lunch and lay it on my wall. He was furious when I asked him to move.

Lol, to be fair he could have sat in his van. It wasn’t hot at all and no reason to use my wall as a bench and then give me attitude about it 🤣

My sister had a similar problem, low wall, congregating and so on.

Left if for a year, but still happened. Then got Iron railings with tasteful spikes on top of the wall. Problem solved.

Neighbours now have the issue to deal with. Sorry now!

One day 2 teenage girls came in to my front garden and stood under the porch overhanging roof to shelter from the rain. I thought that was very cheeky. They were right outside the living room window. They had to come through the gate past the car to get there.
And there were nearby trees they could have sheltered under.

It wouldn't bother me.

I used to live in a GF flat with a low wide window sill that randoms would sit on to have a fag. I had a GSD who only barked at people she knew. So I'd wind her up and say "Who's this, is it (person she knew)" and watch the random shit themselves when she barked.

Stopped being a problem after a while.

It would irritate me, not enough to 'move them on', but it could be worse...

We live in a flat above a shop and customers seem to think our front door has conveniently been placed there for them to tie their dogs to. Now this is annoying - not being able to get in or out of your front door without a strange dog barking and/or leaping up at you. I don't think people would tie their dogs to someone's front gate, would they? I'd rather have your students, I think!

Mine was (probably is when the kids go back to school in September) the local playground - and the best place to wait for a dealer to drop off from his place round the corner.

Pity that the house opposite is owned by a copper (only reason I know this is on one evening, I dropped off a parcel just after he got home and his warrant card was on the table by the door ). He would sit upstairs with the window open a crack and just listen to the arrangements being made.

Three weeks of that, and the next group I saw sitting on the wall were a full complement of police, complete with the battering ram thing.

Nobody's sat on my wall since.

A family of four parked their car on my drive then spent the night in it! I live on he South coast near where those stupid people caused such trouble on the beach yesterday. Pour some itching powder on the wall if they come back.

Happens all the time here - London street of terraced houses with walls maybe 8 ft from front bay, just right height to sit on or little ones to walk on. It doesn’t bother me at all, though makes my DH get a bit twitchy and Victor Meldrew ish. Would be annoying if it was constant and more than a couple of people, maybe.

If your wall is in state that it is likely to crumble, though, OP, you should get it fixed - you are opening yourself up to potential claims if someone gets injured, even if they are on your property.

@MitziK that’s hilarious! I should be grateful that it’s not drug dealers (though that was my old street, poorly lit, big hedges).

@jellyfish the wall is fine, but is starting to show it’s age (the fact that it was more of a lean than a sit probably added to my rage, a balanced sit would be better for the wall). Rebuilding it will cost £££ because reclaimed bricks, lime mortar etc, neighbour had to pay £10k for one of theirs!

@saltycat sadly no spikes, would be in breach of the conservation area rules
