AIBU?

To spend £2 on a loaf of bread.

BIL face-timed while we were making tea (cheese on toast).

Apparently our bread looks posh, he asked how much it costs, madness according to him. It costs 4 times as much as it should, he says.

Well, fair enough, but we all like this one, and don't mind paying for something we enjoy. And it keeps the local bakery in business.

Now he keeps sending DH incessant supermarket links to cheaper loaves of bread. (He's nearly 50 by the way, not a teenager).

AIBU to think buying the cheapest product available isn't actually morally superior? It's not like I'm asking him to buy expensive bread.

I think it's important not to buy the cheapest going a lot of the time because when you pay less than expected for goods or services usually someone or something is exploited along the line.
I pay more for free range pork from the small holding and eggs from the local chicken farm because I know the welfare standards. I buy milk from the organic range or the ones where they pay the farmers extra so the cows get a better quality of life and I don't tend to buy t shirts for £2 for the same reason.
Your bread sounds fine, especially if you're supporting a local business.

Bread from our local bakery goes up to about £7 a loaf Grin and it’s pretty good. I don’t like supermarket sliced bread. It’s up to you how you spend your money!

What kind of car does he drive? Start sending him links to knackered old £500 hatchbacks and ask why he doesn't have one of them instead. Or if he has an iphone, send him links to the most basic Chinese smartphone. Maybe he'll get the message that things which technically fulfill the same function are not all exactly the same.

Tesco loaves don't last as long so we're spending £1.80 on a branded loaf, which stays usable for nearly the whole week.
800g seeded.

A nice deli loaf costs anything from £2 to nearly £5 here!

Dp has been making his own which while not necessarily as good as a lovely fancy deli loaf (which I almost never buy due to the price) has been absolutely lovely with soup or just bread and butter over the last while. He even made his own butter a couple of weeks ago! I'm not looking forward to when he doesn't have time.

I should say they will be once he gets his technique down! I'm not dissing the sexy baker in my house.

I've only ever bought a cheap loaf of bread, it was horrible. I pay £1.35 for a loaf. £2 from the bakery sounds fair for a nice fresh loaf. If you like it, then carry on. Your brother cannot compare a cheap 50 pence loaf with a quality one from the bakery! That's like comparing a 60 pence bar of morrisons milk chocolate to a bar of dairy milk!

I'm really wondering if I'm just living in a very expensive area with overly expensive supermarkets if £2 is expensive and posh.

I buy the 55p own brand ‘toastie’ loaf if it’s just for toast... but buy a more expensive one if it’s to eat as bread in sandwiches or with soup... love the crusts on bakery type bread! We have very cheap bread at work and you can tell.. it smells of vinegar (preservative?🤷‍♀️) and is not very nice at all. I love Hovis as a brown bread.

Lolllll we regularly spend £5 on the MOST DELICIOUS sourdough as our local deli. Bread is one of life's greatest pleasures and it's always worth it.

He sounds bored as hell.

Your DH needs to send him a message back that says

Get a fucking life, you knob!

Has he got nothing better to do on a Friday evening? Jesus.

Ok, I was today years old when I found out that bread shaming exists.

Your BIL sounds joyless. Food is about more than basic sustenance. Otherwise we’d all be on powdered meal replacement stuff delivered monthly in sacks!

I just got Dh a nice loaf from the M&S bakery, he'd have a heart attack. My is Gluten free and £2.50 for a teeny loaf of grossness.

I’ve no idea how much bread costs either. We like the one with loads of seeds. I’m sure it’s more than 50p

I got Warburtons Toastie from the shop over the road and it was £1.50! It was all they had but I still don't think £2 for a nice load is expensive

Ours is more than that and so worth it. Local bakers are fantastic.

I can’t believe this is even an issue! Worrying about what kind of bread people eat! I eat Aldi’s own, 55p a loaf, last week I bought a tiger loaf which was £1.30. It’s bread ffs!

My dc can’t eat gluten so for decent GF bread I pay at least £3 -£4 a loaf. To be honest I’d rather spend less but we have no choice and to be fair it is very good bread which GF stuff often isn’t.
The regular bread we buy for me and dh is around £2 a loaf which I think is fairly normal.

The best bread you can buy round my way is £2.50 for a large wholemeal. So I buy that. Unfortunately the bakery is about to shut down after 65 years in the business and I'm gutted. There is literally no other decent bread to be had in East London (well not my bit of East London). I'd happily spend almost anything for proper, lovely bread.

I rarely eat bread , about once every couple of weeks I'll have toast but it has to be made from a nice white loaf (pref one I slice myself) with jam or marmalade .

£2 is fine IMO . He needs to butt out .

Cheap bread is vile. I was sent a loaf of Asda's own as a substitute and I opened the packet to be hit in the face by the most awful chemical smell. It went straight in the bin.

There are a few things in life where it's worth spending a bit more for extra quality and I would count bread as one of those things. I enjoy decent bread so much I actually make my own now but I understand this isn't an option for everyone.

We buy sourdough from Waitrose. It's £3.50.

What kind of load is he getting for 50p? Can you even get one at all for much less than £1?

Well now I feel like my low-budget 55p bread is something to be ashamed of! We buy bakers bread now and again as a treat. Couldn't afford to do it every time though especially the rate my family get through it.
