BIL face-timed while we were making tea (cheese on toast).

Apparently our bread looks posh, he asked how much it costs, madness according to him. It costs 4 times as much as it should, he says.

Well, fair enough, but we all like this one, and don't mind paying for something we enjoy. And it keeps the local bakery in business.

Now he keeps sending DH incessant supermarket links to cheaper loaves of bread. (He's nearly 50 by the way, not a teenager).

AIBU to think buying the cheapest product available isn't actually morally superior? It's not like I'm asking him to buy expensive bread.

I hate cheap bread, it tastes actively unpleasant and makes me feel ill. If I can’t afford really nice bread I’d rather have rice or potatoes instead.

Can I recommend the Too Good To Go app? My local Boulangerie is on it, you get a massive bag with a boule, a baguette, maybe a couple of bags of croissants, and a few pastries, all for £3.95.


M&S cheddar & red Leicester cob is £2 for a small loaf and it is without doubt the finest thing on earth. Utterly addictive and lasts approx half a day in our house (2 adults).

Ooo. I walked past a display of those yesterday. Sadly I was on my way out and had already purchased my shopping, otherwise I would have grabbed one.

I think part of the problem is that we have so much choice/too much choice? And of course everyone has different budgets, needs and priorities.

For me, I buy the best food we can afford and shop at different places such as Aldi, M and S and Asda. I don’t tend to buy the cheap version of anything and prioritise food over something like alcohol.

Ds (17) only eats brown bread and I prefer white but a decent one. Dd (9) doesn’t eat much bread so will eat whatever white one I buy.

I do remember staying at my friends house as a teenager and her living by an Aldi and her mum would send us over for the 17p loaves for toast and it was literally the nicest toast I’ve ever had.

I prefer the likes of Jackson’s bread to Warburtons and my favourite is the white bloomer half size from M and S, well under £1.

70isaLimit my insides don't like much bread either. I can eat sourdough though. Not sure why although I have seen it suggested that as it's made using a slow fermenting process then some of the more indigestible ingredients have already been, well, digested.

I make my own and it's very easy now I've got the hang of it. Easier than yeasted. I use an overnight, no-knead method and there's very little fuss involved. And my god, it tastes bloody delicious.

It’s enormous, keeps all week, tastes absolutely fantastic. When I can afford it I get it, the rest of the time I stick to bagels or pitta. I’m just not keen on Chorleywood bread unless it’s a toastie.

DH likes whole meal granary, kids like cheap white bread. We have a freezer full of those.

I love really good bread. My favourite at the moment is the pugliese toasting bread from waitrose or sainsburies and thats £2 for a small loaf.
The children seem to prefer the crappy cheap white bread, so I get that too. I dont mind eating that for toast, but I wouldnt want that to be the only bread I eat. Bread is too important

I regularly spend £5/6 on a loaf of sourdough from an artisan bakery. It’s delicious and well worth the money.

However I have now learnt to make my own and it’s nearly just as good. I have also made my own ciabatta which was lovely as well. You can’t beat decent bread. 50p loaves just don’t cut it. At a push I will buy the M&S 65p loaf if I can’t get to my normal shop.

£2 is reasonable for a decent loaf you BIL sounds a bit weird.

We buy granary bread which is about £1.80, so £2 doesn’t sound that expensive.

Ergh things like that irritate me no end my duncle used to try this with the whole family....frankly he got several polite but very direct messages telling him he was massively overstepping , not to justify it and not to do it again (I suspect my lovely daunt had a word as well) , some months we buy the 55p bread and some months we have the £3 bread. I can't possibly imagine whose business it is either than ours.

The Co-op used to do a range of flavoured ciabatta type breads that were amazing and about £2 a loaf.

Sadly they've disappeared, fallen victim to lockdown range simplification perhaps, but they were often reduced to pennies at the end of the day, so an absolute bargain if they had them in.

That’s nothing, I once ate one of those in the car when I got stuck in traffic after I'd bought it. I just kept having a nibble while I was sat there and suddenly there was hardly any left and I thought 'might as well finish it off now'.

He's mad. Of course you can get bread for 50 p, but it's not the same as 'proper' bread. It's like the difference between instant and fresh coffee.

We get a mix of plastic white sliced and fresh crusty bread depending what we want it for. Some very cheap ones aren't too bad, eg aldi fake Warburtons or M&S but the Asda one is horrible.

But as long as you're not on a really tight budget and £2+ bread is leaving you short overall, who gives a fuck what you buy. It's not like you're getting it shipped from Harrods.

Eating nice food at home is a really good value way to have a treat, because no matter how much your bread costs, it's still probably cheaper than eating out at really cheap places like McDonald's or Wetherspoons.

Our local bakers charge £2 and it goes stale after 2 days but you know it has no nasty additives and is worth every single penny
