AIBU?

To spend £2 on a loaf of bread.

BIL face-timed while we were making tea (cheese on toast).

Apparently our bread looks posh, he asked how much it costs, madness according to him. It costs 4 times as much as it should, he says.

Well, fair enough, but we all like this one, and don't mind paying for something we enjoy. And it keeps the local bakery in business.

Now he keeps sending DH incessant supermarket links to cheaper loaves of bread. (He's nearly 50 by the way, not a teenager).

AIBU to think buying the cheapest product available isn't actually morally superior? It's not like I'm asking him to buy expensive bread.

Even a bod standard squashy white bread Chorleywood baking method loaf is about £1.50 in my local shops so £2 for a decent loaf is a bargain.

4 times as much?? When is he buying his bread, 1993?

@KilljoysDutch

A loaf of just warburtons is £1.05 and shops own "nice" bread is £1-£1.50 a loaf. Can you even get a 50p loaf?

Morrisons do an 800g loaf for 55p.

Standard bread price is about £1/1.20 I would say. So £2 is a smidgen more posh but hardly excessive.

Bog standard, not bod standard!

I have honestly never seen a loaf for 50p. Even 25 years ago when I was a student a loaf cost about 90p

Asda toastie loaf is 55p and is OK, I mean you're just making toast! but I much prefer a more expensive loaf, tiger loaf is a good start but if I go to a deli I’ll happily buy an artisan loaf for £££

Actually it seems like my flippant remark may have been exactly right - according to this the average price of a loaf of bread hovered around 50p for about a decade, from 1989 until 2001, when your BIL would have been in his 20s.

So I'm betting since he got married his wife does the shopping and his memory of the price of bread is stuck in a 1990s time warp.

I actually have no idea how much a loaf of bread in the supermarket costs, I’ve never looked.
However most weekends we buy a £4.50 loaf of sourdough from the deli down the road and it’s worth every penny

Aside from the actual price of bread, he sounds like the kind of guy that makes themselves feel big by putting others down. Knob.

But how odd of him to be sending you links to cheaper loaves! Is he perhaps worried about your financial position and genuinely thinks he’s helping you out?

This bread is the pinnacle of toasting bread Grin

Even M&S do cheap loafs! So I’m not sure how some people have never seen a cheap loaf. I’m pretty sure they have always been around.

We have an "artisan" bakery where they sell a loaf that costs £8.

I'd want it to have a gold leaf crust at that price.

We spend £1.20-2.50, depending on where we shop#. Even Kingsmill is over £1 in our convenience shop.

You can still buy bread for around 50p per loaf.

I buy 55p toastie loaves from Morrisons every week for DH's sandwiches - you get 800g of bread for that price. They also do a 400g loaf for under 50p.

You probably won't get branded bread for that price but certainly you can get cheap supermarket own-brand stuff.

It sounds like an expensive loaf of bread to me, but if you like it and you can afford it, why not buy it?

You can get a loaf of bread for as little as 40p from Tesco btw. I’ve not tried their super cheap bread, but I’m willing to bet it’s not as nice as the average £2 loaf of bread.

M&S 65p 800g wholemeal is our everyday bread or toast and sarnies. Love a nice bakery sourdough loaf though!

Coeliac household here. Wish that was an option! £3.50 easily every time!

Couldn't tell you how much a loaf is anymore But I can tell you that your BIL needs to be told to mind his own fucking business.

It's a £2 loaf not a £200,000 investment he might have some valuable knowledge of FFS

Since lockdown, we've discovered a local bakery and their large sourdough loaves are £5 each! Central London though, but delicious. I'm happy to support a local business, but not daily at that price! I also like warburtons.

Seems he has nothing better to do than send you links to cheaper loaves. Does he earn alot less than yourselves or have learning issues, as this seems an odd thing to do! Confused

I buy 55p bread from Asda. The dc can get through a loaf and a half to two in a day, so it’s the only way to afford their bread habit! Plus I don’t like it so it keeps me away from carbs...

I just looked at the Tesco website and they have cheap bread. Then I logged in to see if it made a difference and sure enough, cheapest loaf available for home delivery is £1.20...
