AIBU?

To spend £2 on a loaf of bread.

BIL face-timed while we were making tea (cheese on toast).

Apparently our bread looks posh, he asked how much it costs, madness according to him. It costs 4 times as much as it should, he says.

Well, fair enough, but we all like this one, and don't mind paying for something we enjoy. And it keeps the local bakery in business.

Now he keeps sending DH incessant supermarket links to cheaper loaves of bread. (He's nearly 50 by the way, not a teenager).

AIBU to think buying the cheapest product available isn't actually morally superior? It's not like I'm asking him to buy expensive bread.

I'm sure you can, but I was talking about the average price.

I like a particular malted sourdough loaf that's £3.50 a loaf. £2 is fine.

I love all the faux 'shock' on here- it's not 'normal' to spend £3.00- £4.50 on a loaf of bread surely! Warburton's toastie here along with their seeded loaf - £1.05 for the white - £1.60 max for the seeded. That is my weekly order - I'm an Ocado shopper despite living oop north and could get Gail's sourdough etc but really -no way - get perfect bread from my local bakery - £1.00 a loaf when we want a treat.

@KilljoysDutch

A loaf of just warburtons is £1.05 and shops own "nice" bread is £1-£1.50 a loaf. Can you even get a 50p loaf?

Yes, there's this in tesco. I wouldn't buy it though. Cheap bread isn't usually very nice.

Proper bread is worth every penny. The only reasonably nice ‘cheap’ bread is Polish Bakery bread from Asda and that’s about £1.50. Your BIL is a philistine.

Oh gosh those 50p loaves aren't good.

Yanbu. Different people favour different things.
The bread I buy for myself is about 90p but it's danish white and flimsy and tiny so I'd begrudge paying more for air 😂
However I wouldn't hesitate to spend £2 or more on decent bread for dh and dd. There is also nothing wrong with buying the cheapest options. People are just weird and just things for no reason.

I spend about £3.60 on a loaf of sourdough, but it all gets used. If I buy sliced pap, then it makes me feel ill, and goes blue.

I spent the last 13 years in Belgium, and a loaf being under €1.50 there was unusual. I usually paid around €2-2.50 for supermarket bread, which was excellent, and way better than the offerings here, and a bit more from the local bakers.

I'm assuming it is the same as Mothers Pride, the outsider makes the best toast ever and the worst sandwiches.

I've just checked and it's £1.10 in Asda.

Buy whatever bread you enjoy if you can afford it.

It is an expensive loaf by my standards, but every now and then I treat myself to a loaf of "real" bread and devour it with a pound of butter! [grin}

I envy you being able to afford it as your everyday bread - enjoy every delicious mouthful!

I don't buy bread that often, but when I do it costs up to £3.99, depending on the size and type. That's organic and either sourdough or overnight.

Meh. It is like those people who claim that a cheap can of thin, acidic tomatoes is the same as Cirio. Or that the shrill perfume dupe in Aldi or wherever is identical to Coco Chanel.

It is possible that some people genuinely cannot tell the difference, but for most, it is simply a matter of how we view value and how we view money. People are very, very different about that.

He should try being coeliac. The only gluten free loaf I like is £3.75.

His head would explode.

Is he adding up how much it will cost you in petrol/delivery fees to get these 50p loaves?

Think I spend between 65p and £1.89, depending on which shop I am in and what's in stock.

We usually get the 50ish p per loaf bread, it's not the cheapest value bread just supermarket own. The kids like it and it tastes absolutely fine. We occasionally treat ourselves to a French stick or tiger loaf.

Unless you are in quite serious financial difficulty why would you fret over the difference between 50p and £2 for something you (presumably) only buy a couple of each week??

What did you say to him OP?

''Wowzers thanks BIL! Now we can save up to 3 whole pounds a week simply by eating the shittest bread money can buy! I mean who knew?? Soon thanks to you life changing sums of money will be ours!'' Hmm

We are shielding in a village. We have had deliveries from a whole gamut of supermarkets. DD age 8 is very keen on the toastie loaf for 1.05. However, we didn't have "proper" bread for about 2 months and DH was miserable about it. Besides, it is not ideal getting your bread from a delivery once a week. It goes stale and we don't have a very big freezer.

So we have found an artisan baker who will drop off a loaf or 2 and some goodies on his way back from the Saturday market in the nearby town. Now the bread is £2.30-3.50 but it is a) crusty artisan bread and b) is being delivered specially to our door, so I think that's a bargain.

I think £2 a loaf is really expensive. I spend about 60p on a loaf.

If you really want to polish him off for good take him to gails bakery- they had a loaf for £14. £2 is fine op.

Remind him that cheap bread is often full of shite and that there’s a good reason for paying a little bit more to have something with no preservatives etc. Please don't we buy a loaf from asda for 55p. It's all we can afford just now. I have coeliac disease and gluten free bread is expensive so I don't eat it. Just because he's been rude doesn't mean you have to make people feel bad for being poor.
