Might be a bit cheeky but it’s the subject of my dissertation and I’ve found the research fascinating so far. So, fun little experiment (don’t read other people’s comments before answering and give your instinctive answer, don’t think about it too hard!)

What does the word ‘success‘ mean to you?

OP posts:
saleorbouy · 26/06/2020 01:00

To complete the task or goal set.

Sittingontheveranda · 26/06/2020 01:00

ETA if you mean successful - then happiness and financial security.

Classicbrunette · 26/06/2020 01:03

Achieving something difficult.

Samtsirch · 26/06/2020 01:06

I would have to google the etymology of the word, and then bang on about Chaucer etc... then I’d have to look at modern day spelling and meaning. Then draw the conclusion that the word means nothing, or has no meaning.
Then I would look at what it means to me as opposed to what it means to other people, in that particular moment which is relevant or pertaining to them,
Then I would try to argue around all of those viewpoints, just to make sure.

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 26/06/2020 01:13

Being content with the way your life has turned out.

whatnowitsoverseekingadvice · 26/06/2020 01:14

Personal fulfillment

SquirtleSquad · 26/06/2020 01:15

At the moment it means surviving.

Toseland · 26/06/2020 01:21

NotNowPlzz · 26/06/2020 01:23

A patriarchal and capitalist construct of domination of any given environment and hoarding of resources

clipclop5 · 26/06/2020 01:23

Euclid · 26/06/2020 01:24

Pixxie7 · 26/06/2020 01:25

Happiness.

Samtsirch · 26/06/2020 01:26

Just to add to what I previously said, it would also be important to tie things in with current situations, comparing and contrasting etc, past and present, and keeping things relevant .

Samtsirch · 26/06/2020 01:33

Also leave the conclusion open, that you accept that what you are writing is current in the time you are writing, but you accept that there is always room for change and advancement, and that it’s a welcome thing to be challenged , and you welcome future opinions.

littlenickyy61 · 26/06/2020 01:39

Happiness

Newjez · 26/06/2020 02:03

Being happy
This
MrsAvocet · 26/06/2020 02:03

The process of setting, reaching and reviewing personal goals.
I think it is a continous process, not something that you achieve and are done with.
Well, obviously you might succeed in reaching a particular target like passing a specific exam, so that's over with, but there's usually something else that follows on. I don't think that overall success in life is a single thing.

OldQueen1969 · 26/06/2020 02:06

Depends on the day....

ATM like @SquirtleSquad survival....

Youcunnyfunt · 26/06/2020 02:12

Success to me implies a degree of effort and some sort of control over the results

I don’t think getting married is a success, having a happy and lengthy marriage could be called a success however

I think a lot of what is called “success” these days is luck which is not really true success - anyone can have a bit of luck or bad luck

Sparklingbrook · 26/06/2020 02:14

Achieving what you set out to do.

Sparklingbrook · 26/06/2020 02:14

But there’s this too

What does this word mean to you?
fallfallfall · 26/06/2020 02:14

Positive outcome

OutComeTheWolves · 26/06/2020 02:27

Understanding what it is that will make your life happier and then getting it.

I think the understanding what it is you want is the hardest bit. All too often people forget that the definition of success is very subjective. They can spent twenty years working towards someone else's goal; then get there and realise they're living a life that doesn't bring them happiness.

eenymeenymineymo · 26/06/2020 02:29

Contentment - for whatever & wherever you have reached in your life. That was my1st thought too (without looking at anyone elses anwers :) )

SeaToSki · 26/06/2020 02:31

Happiness and satisfaction. It could be for just one thing, and for a short time period, or it could be a long term broader life goal
