I am fascinated by Stone, much like I was by Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. He comes across as such a nasty piece of work and I've seen the anger all over Twitter about this.

This tweet sums it up...
I'll end with this, the words of the federal judge who handled more on the Mueller cases than any other court.
"He was not prosecuted, as some have complained, for standing up for the President. He was prosecuted for covering up for the President"

And here is a brilliant thread unrolled that explains every single bit of the lead up tothis. It's helped me to understand.
Worth a read.

And here is a piece disputing McNinny's statement to the Press about it

I notice with no surprise that Stone's given reason for not wanting to go to prison is a suddenly-developed long-term respiratory condition which would put him at special risk from covid-19 in prison.

Clearly what is needed is that he has permission to apply for a re-trial "to clear his name", is re-tried under a different President and without Barr to protect him, is found guilty as before (since the evidence against him ois clear and unrefutable), and is sentenced as he should and would have been if not for his chums.

And while we are at it, someone who has pleaded guilty is sentenced on his plea rather than allowed a belated change of mind and no trial, and Flynn too is sentenced as he merits.

Stone is diabolical. I wonder what else he'll do with his knowledge?

Write a book?

I'm on the fence as to whether or not it'll be a paean to Scrotus' 'magnificence' or the dirtiest 'tell-all' there is. The problem with dealing with a no-morals scumbag like Stone is that their ultimate loyalty is to themselves and they'd just as soon kill you as kiss you.

Although I think they're both birds of a feather (ie vultures) and they both probably have enough dirt on the other to sink them. But Scrotus has a lot more to lose than Stone. Scrotus needs people to think he's wonderful. Stone doesn't give a rat's arse.

I hope he doesn't care and goes for the jugular.

They deserve each other. They deserve to drag each other down.

This may have been lost in the usual maelstrom.

www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/07/the-deaths-trump-wants-you-to-see-and-the-deaths-he-wants-you-to-ignore/

'But pay attention, because there are deaths they want you to ignore and deaths they want to make a public spectacle. Next week, the Trump administration intends to open up the federal execution chamber for business after it has been dormant for 17 years. As the government hopes you won’t really notice the deaths that reveal their gross incompetence, they’re seeking to highlight the ones they believe demonstrate what tough leaders they are. “The four murderers whose executions are scheduled today have received full and fair proceedings under our Constitution and laws.” Barr said last month. “We owe it to the victims of these horrific crimes, and to the families left behind, to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system.”'

Bravo Angela! (or should that be Brava!?)
Quote:
Angela Merkel may not scream down the phone at President Donald Trump -- but she knows how to insert a dagger.

Trump, as well as Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro and Russia's Vladimir Putin, must have felt his ears burning when the German Chancellor demolished their approaches to the coronavirus in a speech Thursday. "As we are experiencing firsthand, you cannot fight the pandemic with lies and disinformation any more than you can fight it with hate or incitement to hatred," Merkel said. "The limits of populism and denial of basic truths are being laid bare."

Actually, what I was thinking about yesterday when I made that semi-cryptic remark about Kavanaugh's motives was that he may be thinking he doesn't want Presidents being able to tell Judges where they get off, given that he could be on the wrong end of it if/when a Democrat takes over. He's more loyal to his... may I say "principles" in this context?... than to a President who isn't going to be there for ever. Mind you I'm a little surprised he doesn't have more faith in the well-oiled election-rigging machinery.

PerkingFaintly · 11/07/2020 19:14

Kavanaugh's only 55 and must be hoping to see out an awful lot of presidents.

I can't see any obvious way he's benefitted by a ruling that nobody is above the law, though. In fact the opposite could be the case. If the details of the rape accusation were even roughly true, I'd be astonished if Ford were the only woman he raped.

Mueller has spoken:

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/07/11/mueller-stone-oped/?arc404=true&itid=lk_interstitial_manual_5

'The work of the special counsel’s office — its report, indictments, guilty pleas and convictions — should speak for itself. But I feel compelled to respond both to broad claims that our investigation was illegitimate and our motives were improper, and to specific claims that Roger Stone was a victim of our office. The Russia investigation was of paramount importance. Stone was prosecuted and convicted because he committed federal crimes. He remains a convicted felon, and rightly so.

Russia’s actions were a threat to America’s democracy. It was critical that they be investigated and understood. By late 2016, the FBI had evidence that the Russians had signaled to a Trump campaign adviser that they could assist the campaign through the anonymous release of information damaging to the Democratic candidate. And the FBI knew that the Russians had done just that: Beginning in July 2016, WikiLeaks released emails stolen by Russian military intelligence officers from the Clinton campaign. Other online personas using false names — fronts for Russian military intelligence — also released Clinton campaign emails.

Following FBI Director James B. Comey’s termination in May 2017, the acting attorney general named me as special counsel and directed the special counsel’s office to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The order specified lines of investigation for us to pursue, including any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump campaign. One of our cases involved Stone, an official on the campaign until mid-2015 and a supporter of the campaign throughout 2016. Stone became a central figure in our investigation for two key reasons: He communicated in 2016 with individuals known to us to be Russian intelligence officers, and he claimed advance knowledge of WikiLeaks’ release of emails stolen by those Russian intelligence officers.
We now have a detailed picture of Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. The special counsel’s office identified two principal operations directed at our election: hacking and dumping Clinton campaign emails, and an online social media campaign to disparage the Democratic candidate. We also identified numerous links between the Russian government and Trump campaign personnel — Stone among them. We did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government in its activities. The investigation did, however, establish that the Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome. It also established that the campaign expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts.

Uncovering and tracing Russian outreach and interference activities was a complex task. The investigation to understand these activities took two years and substantial effort. Based on our work, eight individuals pleaded guilty or were convicted at trial, and more than two dozen Russian individuals and entities, including senior Russian intelligence officers, were charged with federal crimes.

Congress also investigated and sought information from Stone. A jury later determined he lied repeatedly to members of Congress. He lied about the identity of his intermediary to WikiLeaks. He lied about the existence of written communications with his intermediary. He lied by denying he had communicated with the Trump campaign about the timing of WikiLeaks’ releases. He in fact updated senior campaign officials repeatedly about WikiLeaks. And he tampered with a witness, imploring him to stonewall Congress.

The jury ultimately convicted Stone of obstruction of a congressional investigation, five counts of making false statements to Congress and tampering with a witness. Because his sentence has been commuted, he will not go to prison. But his conviction stands.

Russian efforts to interfere in our political system, and the essential question of whether those efforts involved the Trump campaign, required investigation. In that investigation, it was critical for us (and, before us, the FBI) to obtain full and accurate information. Likewise, it was critical for Congress to obtain accurate information from its witnesses. When a subject lies to investigators, it strikes at the core of the government’s efforts to find the truth and hold wrongdoers accountable. It may ultimately impede those efforts.

We made every decision in Stone’s case, as in all our cases, based solely on the facts and the law and in accordance with the rule of law. The women and men who conducted these investigations and prosecutions acted with the highest integrity. Claims to the contrary are false.'

So it's been the most beautiful evening here, not far from Portsmouth NH, where Trump cancelled this evening's rally because of 'the weather'.

It really would have been the most perfect afternoon/evening to hold a rally.

Huge missed opportunity. I'm sure millions would have turned up given half a chance Grin

Roussette · 12/07/2020 08:09

I wonder what his real reason for cancelling was? Is he giving up and accepting defeat and from now on it's just all about getting what he can out of the post of POTUS? (which of course is what he's been doing the whole time as we know)

I found Trump's mask wearing photo op quite disgusting. After all this time, and hundreds of thousands of deaths he puts a mask on. Whoopy dooo.
And Biden has been made mocked and derided for wearing one for months.
Trump wearing one is almost like a toddler who's done his first poo on a potty and we have to clap and coo. Pathetic. He should've been seen to wear one months ago.

Great comment on Twitter suggesting "weather concerns" actually meant "concerned whether anyone would turn up"

If he thinks he will lose he must be developing an exit strategy which is designed to avoid prosecution.

Wonder where he can run?
