To think that vegan burgers shouldn't represent rare beef?

I'm not a vegetarian or vegan I just prefer vegan burgers/sausages etc so I don't have to deal with bits of gristle.Cooked a "No Bull" vegan burger for dinner and it genuinely looked like rare meat inside. If it put me off a bit then surely not many vegans would be able to stomach these? Tasted OK but probably wouldn't buy again.

Some people are vegan for environmental/welfare purposes, not because they don’t like meat.

There’s plenty of dry bean burgers for someone that doesn’t like the thought of meat.

namesnames · 23/06/2020 18:06

It's a mock meat, what do you expect?

villamariavintrapp · 23/06/2020 18:11

I know what you mean, it's the fake blood isn't it? (Beetroot I think?) I have to say I found it a bit off putting too, but there's plenty other types of veggie/vegan burgers so just buy those. People have different tastes and will be veggie/vegan for different reasons.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/06/2020 18:11

No I mean It was pink and unappealing it didn't look like the usual things I've had

speakout · 23/06/2020 18:12

Don't buy them then.

Plump82 · 23/06/2020 18:13

Im vegetarain and im happy to eat anything that resembles meat. The more like it the better. I was a huge meat eater but gave up for welfare purposes. I do miss it, so all these alternatives are perfect for me.

SistemaAddict · 23/06/2020 18:14

Frankie and Bennys have one like this. Very pink. Very unappetising time look at but tasted good. I miss the old Mediterranean burger they did.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/06/2020 18:19

@speakout I won't! thanks for the input 👍

Concestor · 23/06/2020 18:38

Yabvu. I am vegan and am happy for my food to resemble meat as long as it isn't available meat.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it has to become a universal law, especially as you're not even vegan!

Concestor · 23/06/2020 18:39

Actually, not available. DYAC

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/06/2020 18:43

@zurala universal law?! No just thought it looks unappealing

I hate anything made to look, taste or feel like meat. Recently started moving away from the quorn and Linda McCartney type stuff - it’s all getting a bit meaty. I’m vegetarian because the thought of dead bodies in my mouth freaks me out, and therefore YADNBU.

Queenoftheashes · 23/06/2020 18:44

I love the rare type vegan beyond meat burger.
It isn’t particularly reminiscent of a rare beef burger to me but apparently it is convincing if you’ve forgotten what meat is like.

SadSisters · 23/06/2020 18:46

I find those burgers specifically a bit weird. I generally have no issues with meat replacements at all, but I’ve always wondered if the manufacturers of those ones genuinely believe that oozing blood is the thing people really miss about meat burgers?

I guess they must appeal to some people, but I don’t care for them myself!

Sparklesocks · 23/06/2020 18:47

A lot of veggies/vegans still like the taste and texture of meat, they just don’t eat it for ethical/environmental/health reasons. It’s not really meat so it’s not really an issue for most. But each to their own, everyone will have their own preference.

Elai1978 · 23/06/2020 18:48

oozing blood is the thing people really miss about meat burgers?

The liquid that comes out of meat isn’t blood

LockdownLump · 23/06/2020 18:50

I’m vegetarian because the thought of dead bodies in my mouth freaks me out

I'm a veggie also, but the use of emotive language like this ^^ pisses me off.

Dead bodies - you are trying to equate animals with humans and stuff like this is why people think veggies and vegans think they are morally superior to meat eaters.

It's ridiculous.

SadSisters · 23/06/2020 18:52

Dead bodies - you are trying to equate animals with humans and stuff like this is why people think veggies and vegans think they are morally superior to meat eaters.

What is meat if not the dead body of an animal...?

Miriel · 23/06/2020 18:52

I buy No Bull burgers and I leave them in the oven for longer than the recommended time as I like the taste of them and that they're high-protein, but not the texture/beetroot oozing.

QueenofLouisiana · 23/06/2020 18:55

I don’t like them either. DH tells me that the Moving Mountains burger is nothing like meat, but to me it feels like meat and the juicy middle makes me feel a bit nauseous. I haven’t eat meat for 30 years, so don’t really know how it would taste.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/06/2020 18:56

@Miriel so if you leave them in longer the pink goes?

OP posts:
WinstonWolf · 23/06/2020 18:56

I know what you mean. It's the packets of fake "mince" that look exactly liked minced meat that freak me out the most.

Luckily, there has been an absolute explosion in the variety of veggie/vegan products available in recent years, so there's always an alternative Smile

Nottherealslimshady · 23/06/2020 18:56

Because vegans aren't vegans because they dont like the taste of meat, they're vegans because they dont like the murder if animals.

SadSisters · 23/06/2020 18:57

@queenoflouisiana I’ve had a similar experience with the impossible burger at Burger King - it’s just a bit too close to real for me. I’ve sometimes made my husband open his meat burger so I can look and reassure myself that they’ve definitely given me the right one. I think it’s a really delicious burger, I just need that reassurance sometimes that it’s not real meat!

QueenofLouisiana · 23/06/2020 19:04

@SadSisters yes! I had to do the same.
