AIBU?

To think bad of people that work in slaughterhouses??

I was reading something earlier and it got me thinking about the members of staff who actually work in slaughterhouses and who see these things first hand.

Regardless of whether you eat meat or not we're all still human and I'd assume it's a job that's a very hard one emotionally... or am I wrong?? Do the colleagues just look at it like a job and not physically killing animals? It would break my heart 😭

I don’t know how they do it. The thought of it is something that haunts me so I don’t eat meat anymore

But I don’t think badly of them.
Someone has to do it if people want to eat meat

@VanillaSpiceCandle I should've worded it differently I know. My bad.

What’s the alternative? We automatically convict everyone accused of a crime in the hope that some of them are guilty and just view the ones who are innocent as collateral damage?

That's not my point, my point is lawyers go into that job knowing they will be helping guilty people, not wether people deserve a fair trial or not 🤨

Meat is a vital part of the food chain. What would you propose as an alternative to abattoirs? I'm grateful and appreciative of the people who are willing to do this.

Eh? I don’t think it is. I think we could all be veggie if we wanted to. Obviously cats and dogs would have to eat Quorn or something. Not sure about zoo animals.

Quorn all round I guess.

@RiverMeadow OK what is your solution getting meat? Meat is a vital part of the food supply and if all the people doing it are so bad, what is your alternative?

I expect most lawyers recognise that upholding the maxim that people are innocent until proven guilty and deserve a fair trial is one of the keystones of a fair and democratic society.

You seem to be making some point suggesting that defence lawyers are immoral people because criminals sometimes go free. But if you believe that, you must genuinely have an alternative vision for the criminal justice system. If it’s immoral to defend people who may be guilty of crimes, what do you think we should do instead of having criminal trials?

And what’s the logical end point of your position? A doctor might treat a person who is a serial killer - is that also immoral in your view? Should they start refusing to practice medicine in case they save the life of a person who goes on to cause pain and trauma to others?

"why they would want to?"

The need to pay bills is usually quite coercive.

Dogs can technically be veggie but cats have to eat meat. It's not about what we can do, not everyone wants to be vegetarian and nor should they be forced to. As long as meat is still in demand then the abattoirs still require staff.

"Smaller abattoirs still exist"
They are increasingly difficult to find we buy locally produced pork traditional breeds reared sustainably as a hobby by an arable farmer. He was saying he's not going to continue doing it as the local "small abattoir" he uses has just shut and the next nearest one is over 100 miles away. This is a very common story.

Many years a vegetariam (about 40 years)

I watched "Kill It Cook It Eat It" a few years ago when the subject was very young animals .
They struggled less maybe because of their size but there was efficiency , compassion and proffessionalism shown by the Abbatoir workers .
OK that was on TV, who knows what goes on behind the walls ?
I thought this was about the story in The Mail today (piglets) if anyone wants to search it up.

So- I'd rather work in an abbatoir than test cosmetics on rabbits' eyes .

@GreytExpectations My response was to you calling me judgemental etc.

I didn't ask if there was a solution to where we could close slaughterhouses and everyone would live happily ever after did I? My thread was about the people who work in slaughterhouses and how they must feel and why they work there, to which I now have the answers?

Have a read of this, written by someone who worked in a slaughterhouse. Be warned, it may be upsetting for some.

I'm taking about the physical killing of a being and how awful it must be to have to do that for a living so I'm not really sure what you're getting at?

You're projecting. Not everyone thinks the physical act of killing for food is horrible. I'm sure there's a lot of people who just see it as a job like any other. Look at all the people who Hunt recreationally. They don't see the act of killing as a negative.

lawyers knowingly help people they know are guilty of awful crimes

Guilty as soon as you're accused is the best system, eh?

And lawyers should be judge & jury. Actually, anyone could be judge and jury. Just make an accusation and the accusation must be true. Let's dispense with a process where people listen to the evidence and have guidance in how the law should be interpretted. Nobody is allowed a defence. Gee, what could go wrong?

I really hope you're a strict vegetarian or vegan OP. Would be next level idiotic to judge the person who does your dirty work for you.

I know someone who worked in chicken 'processing' aka the person who tosses out the male chicks. He seems well adjusted enough.

I don't know how widely applicable it is but the vet interviewed in the book 'farmageddon' said that the majority of people who worked at his abattoir were drunk or on drugs.

@KrisAkabusi I didn't think about it like this but I suppose it just doesn't bother some people.

I used to work with a guy that had previously worked in the slaughter. He was a very cold hard person and he said if they were stressed or having a bad day it wasn't uncommon to stab a (live) animal. I still think about that, it's fucking terrible.
