COVID deniers

My country is now at the beginning of a second wave partially because of people like this. They went out when ill, they had large gatherings - still against guidelines - and the disease, under control, has made a comeback. Restrictions have had to be brought back in. Borders are shutting back down and travel cannot happen - all because of a group of selfish, ignorant people who think they know better.

I’m sick of reading posts on MN from the same kind of deniers who would do exactly the same thing - and possibly extend the pain in their own countries.

I went out yesterday and was amazed at the lack of social distancing. It was like the last few months hadn’t happened.

Yes I know I was out so you could say I was part of the problem, but I tried so hard to keep away from people, others weren’t at all bothered

No - Australia. Numbers are still low and hopefully they’ll stay that way, but they are climbing. My son may not be able to come home for his mid-year college break.

Bumping so that more read this warning and maybe adjust their behavior a bit.

It's a bit like us have the two week warning at the beginning, when Italy was showing us what our future would be like. We didn't use that two week advantage and look where that got us.

People now need to take notice of what's beginning to happen in other countries. Sadly I don't think they will.

The COVID deniers are honestly the thickest pieces of turd out there.

I did a Sunday supermarket shop yesterday (normally go on a Friday morning with all the oldies!) and was genuinely horrified. Over-crowded, no social distancing, people shopping in groups, kids and teenagers everywhere. No staff around to manage the crowds, or to enforce the one-way system. For the first time since March, I honestly felt unsafe.
I got home and emailed their head office to complain. Nothing will come of it, but I was fuming.

@Jeremyironsnothing I think the outbreak in Germany had nothing todo with Covid deniers but with criminal practices at meat packing plants.

But, yes, I have a strong dislike for Covid deniers. They can infect themselves with Ebola. I don’t care as long as they don’t endanger others... but they do endanger others and everybody (people on public transport, children in their kids school, work mates and so on) has to suffer from their selfish attitude.

There have always been people like that - who think it’s fine to take their children out even if they have chickenpox, etc.

I think now is the time to still be cautious, while not being completely locked down. But people never learn from other people's experiences. I wish we could.

Ebola?

TBH I largely blame the media here.

As soon as we went into lockdown the media were shouting that we need to come out of lockdown. So we started to, and the media shouted that it wasn’t fast enough and that the two meter rule should be relaxed. So looks like they’re going to do that too, and now the media are saying it’s too soon.

And if COVID comes back then the government will get the blame, and if it doesn’t then the government will be blamed for stuffing up the economy for something which ended up not being such a big deal after all.

While there are certainly questions to be answered from the government after this I also think there needs to be a serious press enquiry.

Yes but this is vastly different to that, everyone has an opinion at the exact same time, regardless of their personal situation.

Previously logical and considerate friends of mine have had some kind of strange personality transplant and are failing to engage their brains. It is very strange to see

He’s due to fly home in just over a week - that is, if the airlines are still operating. The restrictions change daily. It’s really upsetting. I haven’t seen him for five months.

@Casschops I just wanted to say: I do not care what people do to themselves. They can infect themselves with Ebola, the black pox, the bubonic plague. I do not care as long as they do not endanger others. But those Covid deniers do not live alone on an island, they interact with others and the others are at risk of being infected and that’s what I think is not fair. That is where individual freedom should end.

So everybody feel free to infect themselves, with Covid, the bubonic plague or whatever but only as long as they move to a remote island and leave the rest of the population alone.

That’s interesting DameFanny. I find it fascinating that a great deal of people (it seems) would rather believe in a global conspiracy rather than science. The anti-intellectualism ATM and the lack of critical thought is concerning.

Is the spike in cases a consequence of restrictions being lifted rather than people not following "the rules"

I agree that the press has a lot to answer for. They could have been a moral boosting, we are all in this together, positive force. Instead they've tried their best to divide everyone and are constantly critical of everything. It's horrendous.
The government can't do right, for wrong.

And there's a weird intersection of covid-deniers and 'wellness' people claw - like they'll happily stick a jade egg up their chuff but putting on a face mask is a step too far?

I have family in Australia and they've pretty much carried on as normal throughout (as in, seeing each other as normal, going to each other's homes, sharing meals etc.)

Bonkers, especially as two of them are seriously high risk.

I'm all for lifting restrictions gradually but still observing social distancing. But these idiots will get us all back to square one and end up losing us the freedom they so desperately want.
