To ask what families will do in the summer "holidays"

7 weeks to fill for us. What are you all planning to do for activities for children? We are put off going to parks as toilets are closed and people are toiletting wherever 🤢 praying some sport activities can open up again or our 13 year old will likely be spending even more time sat in his room

Well I don’t know, I have 4 kids under 10 and no parks will be open so it’s going to be a long and boring summer, we live near an outdoor paddling pool which I assume won’t be open either.

PumpkinP · 21/06/2020 18:01

Should add mine don’t like going for walks

Drivingdownthe101 · 21/06/2020 18:03

Err... going for walks? 7 more weeks of walks after the months of walks we’ve already had.
Can’t wait 👍

Appuskidu · 21/06/2020 18:05

Park
Beach
Woods
Garden visits

Rinse and repeat

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 21/06/2020 18:06

Same as now.
Trying to work at home and entertain children at the same time but without the added pressure of nagging the eldest 2 to do school work every 5 minutes.
After work it will be field, walks, woods, bike rides
They can play on the garden and with their toys

formerbabe · 21/06/2020 18:06

Parks are open..do you mean playgrounds pumpkin? They might be. Parents near me are letting their dc on the equipment...think they've had enough!

Useruseruserusee · 21/06/2020 18:06

I’m lucky, mine (aged 5 and 2) love walks and still do even now. We are also going to buy a tent and camp in the garden

Helpmyhair2019 · 21/06/2020 18:08

I don’t know! I’m quite worried about it! I’ve put my children off walking we’ve done it so much and I have already done every possible craft activity that exists on the internet 🤣

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/06/2020 18:08

Mine are 12 and 15 but pretty much what theyve been doing for weeks. Playing boards games, badminton, table tennis, pool, PS4, tv, reading, walking the dog, jigsaws for ds2, texting their friends, helping around the house and garden, school work.

FourTeaFallOut · 21/06/2020 18:10

Just the same as now with less school work, so fuck all.

Love51 · 21/06/2020 18:11

We don't even live near a beach. Hoping the playgrounds open.
My dog phobic child has started a treatment programme so going to the woods might be slightly less traumatic for all concerned. I think I'll be able to send them to the childminder for a while. Lots of walks and hanging out in other people's gardens / having them in ours.
Probably working towards badges. Brownies, beavers, blue Peter, ones we make up, any really.
I've used up all my best entertainment ideas and interesting craft activities.

formerbabe · 21/06/2020 18:11

I'm a sahm but sometimes put my dc in sports camps in the holidays so they can socialize and have fun...I doubt that will happen.

Like taking them swimming too but who knows?!

Six weeks summer holidays I could cope with but it's not is it...it's been like this for months.

It's basically been a six month summer holiday but with nothing to do

BlessYourCottonSocks · 21/06/2020 18:11

I'm hoping we might be able to go stay with family who live many miles away.

But will have to wait and see.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/06/2020 18:12

People will be allowed to go to playgrounds/on holiday/ by then

Toilets are opening thankfully

reefedsail · 21/06/2020 18:12

My DS's sport is re-opening so I'm hoping we'll get 3 or 4 days a week out at that.

LadyPrigsbottom · 21/06/2020 18:14

I have a 2yo and a 5yo (who is back at school now). I expect, when 5yo is off, we will do what dc2 and I already do; go for walks. Or, for variety, we sometimes "feed the ducks" (aka go for a walk with a bag of duck food).

RunningNinja79 · 21/06/2020 18:14

We're going to France at the end of August. It is looking more and more likely we will be able to go. My parents are there now. They went on Thursday. Before then as I'm working from home it will be the same as it has been except no school work

BankofNook · 21/06/2020 18:16

We'll be spending lots of time in the garden. We have a swing set and a trampoline as well as a paddling pool, going to get them a slide and a swingball too.

Lots of walks, luckily we live semi-rural so plenty of green fields, woods, nature trails, etc. virtually on the doorstep as well as the beach a short walk away.

Tent for some garden camping.

We've booked a caravan for four nights at the back end of August when holiday parks will hopefully be open. We're going to take a barbecue, board games, scooters, etc. and make our own entertainment, go for walks in the local area.

We'll probably go up to my mum's garden for a change of scene.

The local NT is hopefully opening its outdoor areas soon so we'll go there.

Local farm has opened it's outdoor areas too so will go there.

Feed the ducks at the nearby pond.

Go fishing.

Lazy days where we all do our thing with screens, books, TV, etc.

Basically a continuation of what we're doing now but without schoolwork. I don't even know if they'll be going back in September as both the schools we use have said that even with a reduction in distancing to 1m they can't accommodate all pupils unless they're allowed to have normal class sizes, if they have to continue with reduced class sizes then they don't have enough classrooms to house everyone.

GreatestShowUnicorn · 21/06/2020 18:17

@Love51have a look at pawprint badges, more badges than you can imagine and more being added all the time.

Feellikedancingyeah · 21/06/2020 18:18

Dreading September because my son has suffered from occasional school refusal. There is no motivation after months of absence

OP posts:
CodenameVillanelle · 21/06/2020 18:19

I'll be doing a mixture of sending mine out on his bike with friends and letting him on his Xbox for hours as thankfully I can still work at home. If it's allowed I will leave him with my parents for a week but I'm not sure if that will be possible or not.

Football training is back on and he usually does a holiday club but they are limited to 5 children per coach - so a day's football will probably cost about £100 rather than the usual £20!!

elinu · 21/06/2020 18:19

DD is 2 so she's below school age, but is starting a preschool in September (hopefully) and will go to nursery once a week until then. We've booked a week in Cornwall in July (booked last year, fingers crossed still going ahead). Just bought an annual pass for the zoo so we'll be going there once a week or so. Have just started using public transport again so we'll be visiting the parks and other outdoor attractions beyond walking distance - luckily she's quite happy to explore green spaces and isn't bothered about playgrounds being shut. We'll probably meet up with parents and siblings every week or so. I'm hoping swimming pools might open - I don't think any of her other pre-lockdown activities will start again before September.

Nquartz · 21/06/2020 18:21

Praying holiday clubs can run from 4th July as DD is booked into 2 days per week for 4 weeks. Also praying were allowed uk holidays & to stay at other people's houses so DD can have a sleepover at the in-laws. On the other days well probably spend a fortune on farms/theme parks (small local rather than LEGOLAND type) to give us something different to do. If it.rains all.summer we'll all slowly lose the plot

wingsandstrings · 21/06/2020 18:22
  • sailing camp (only one day because it's £98 for 2 kids for that one day!)
  • hopefully a cricket camp for DS a week, just waiting final confirmation that they are running it
  • hopefully dance camp for DD for a week
  • a couple of days staying with friends in beautiful rural location
  • a week with wider family in cottage in Scotland
  • having godson to stay (kids will enjoy that, they adore him)
  • lots of picnics, walks, BBQs, all the usual summer good stuff
  • battles over the xbox!
LaurieMarlow · 21/06/2020 18:27

Parks, playgrounds, woods, beach. We’ll do what’s open.

We’ve also got a domestic holiday booked at the start of August, which will hopefully be ok.

2 weeks off work too, which means at least a short break from the juggling, which is fucking killing me right now.
