To ask what families will do in the summer "holidays"

7 weeks to fill for us. What are you all planning to do for activities for children? We are put off going to parks as toilets are closed and people are toiletting wherever 🤢 praying some sport activities can open up again or our 13 year old will likely be spending even more time sat in his room

Walks, exploring lots of new places nearby.... hopefully with some of his friends.
Safari park
Zoo
Miniature golf
Films
Drive through cinema
Pick your own farm trip
Visiting friends and family
Seaside at least once
Farms if they're open.

Mainly trying to break the screen time habit that's developed over the last few months.

Bellesavage · 21/06/2020 19:21

I think we will have to consider keeping school work going for my 5yo. DH and I both need to work full time and will have no annual leave left to take any holiday. If sports clubs don't open up then I'll have to do school work with her to keep her busy otherwise she just mills around whinging. I have one DC under 1 too so helping her with any craft activities is pretty impossible as the you get one eats and rips everything.

BakewellGin1 · 21/06/2020 19:24

Beaches (we have three around our town alone and at least another three within a few miles drive) oldest DS and a friend will probably dig, play cricket, collect crabs etc
Youngest spends all his time paddling in water.

Parks we have quite a few largish parks near us so feeding ducks, playing football etc

Hopefully Hamsterley Forest, Richmond and Forbidden Corner for picnic days....

I'm holding out hope that the children's farms near us will open

Also the Imaginative Play areas for Baby DS...

Oldest will play Football (well training) both 1.1 and group

elliejjtiny · 21/06/2020 19:29

Probably the same as we've been doing since March but without homeschooling. Baking, playing in the garden etc.

Gazelda · 21/06/2020 19:30

DH and I will both be working and mostly neglecting DD (12). We're hoping to get a week off each.

No holiday clubs open.

Her bike is too small and we can't afford another.

I'll arrange SD meet ups with her friends at the park across the road, but she doesn't have enough friends to fill all the days.
Grandparents not an option.
School work has kept her busy since lockdown, but there's no way I'm going to encourage her to do more in her hols, She needs a break.

I'll be digging out more crafts, encouraging more baking, letting her have more screen time, regularly visiting charity shops for more books and anything else I can think of.

parrots · 21/06/2020 19:31

Parks are all open now aren't they? Where are parks closed?

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 21/06/2020 19:32
  1. Continue homeschooling. (Mean Mummy! Grin)
  2. Playgrounds open on the 29th June in Scotland wooohooo
  3. DS's birthday is in July. If riding stables are open I hope to treat him and one other friend to a lesson. As I understand the guidance, this should be allowed.
  4. This one might be controversial: but I'm thinking since playgrounds will be open the Scottish Govt probably accept that kids are not going to be socially distancing.
Me and DH have therefore agreed to stop enforcing this on the kids from 1st July. Therefore, they will be playing out with the neighbourhood kids. We will be the last family in the whole scheme to stop bothering with it, I think!
megletthesecond · 21/06/2020 19:33

More bloody walks and cycle rides around town.
I'm utterly sick of it. We usually go somewhere almost every weekend.

Camomila · 21/06/2020 19:33

We are very lucky we live in Brighton so we have the beach and South Downs, we tend to have an earlier dinner then go out when its quiet, luckily most of the toilets are open.

Otherwise just spend the whole days in my mums back garden, there is a climbing frame/swing/paddling pool and fruit and veg patch.

If it seems safe we will go to Diggerland in Kent or Drusillas Zoo as DS1s birthday trip to Thomas Land got cancelled.

My DC are 4 and a baby so easily entertained.

ThursdayLastWeek · 21/06/2020 19:34

All the parks local to me are still cordoned off.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 21/06/2020 19:36

We have lost 80% or more of our usual income since lockdown. So we will just carry on living and selling stuff and try to save money in every way.

Not having a summer holiday this year is the least of our worries.

rosydreams · 21/06/2020 19:39

i bought a above ground frame pool its deep enough for a adult to swim in.So its great for the family, thats my saving grace this summer lol

beela · 21/06/2020 19:39

More of the same, but with less stressing about school work.

TankGirl97 · 21/06/2020 19:43

More of the same.... playing in the garden, bike rides, walks, trips to the hills/woods/local moors. National trust gardens. I think I'm lucky mine enjoy all these things.
Fingers crossed that campsites open so we can camp for a week somewhere within an hour of home.

Mothership4two · 21/06/2020 19:45

Tent in garden
Just bought an inflatable pool
DH bought an outdoor table tennis table (which I poo-pooed but has been a godsend)
DS has met up with friends twice now at local football field
Football club
And more walks

FourTeaFallOut · 21/06/2020 19:47

Ooh, table tennis ... I might nick that one.

Mikethenight2good · 21/06/2020 19:55

Summer camps round our way have canx so no cover for us.
Looking at hiring a nanny as well as using up holiday and unpaid leave to get us through...
But what we do with them god knows....I am rubbish so need to get creative so they don't sit on their screens too long!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 21/06/2020 19:57

Mom-Fri, DH and I will be working full time from home like we are now. DD will play in the garden, play with toys and generally have to entertain herself. We'll have a few minutes here and there to play and will be able to get a max of 1 week leave each during the 6 weeks.

We'd usually use holiday clubs but that doesn't look like it's happening this year.

Lockdownhairdontcare · 21/06/2020 20:01

Holidays start at the end of the week here. Should be heading to the Lake District on Friday for a friends wedding weekend then Malaga in July but that’s not happening Sad.

Instead we shall be praying the rain goes away to continue our walks (next to beach with river, woods, countryside and town so really lucky), seeing the signets grow, feeding the ducks, gardening, picnics, bbq’s, paddling pool etc.

SuperMumTum · 21/06/2020 20:12

Outdoor summer holiday clubs round here are taking bookings as well as campsites. Hopefully visiting Grandparents too.

nannyplumsmagranny · 21/06/2020 20:13

Parks and the beach.

Hoppinggreen · 21/06/2020 20:14

No idea, we usually go away for 2 weeks at the beginning and 2 at the end.
Childcare not an issue thankfully but it’s going to be long and pretty boring

Scotinoz · 21/06/2020 20:19

Cutting my throats probs!

Kids bored, adults bored.

Grandparents all currently all far away which means can't stay over.

Very desperate!

missyB1 · 21/06/2020 20:20

Play dates with school friends (he’s already back at school so has been mixing with them).
Picnics on local hills.
Days out to local National Trust type places
A couple of weekends away - fingers crossed!

Teaching him to cook simple dishes.
Getting all his gear for starting senior school.

We have 9 weeks to fill!

cabinfever2 · 21/06/2020 20:21

Same as last 13 weeks except DP and I get annual leave so I'm not trying to work and sort the kids at the same time! Can't wait!
