To ask what families will do in the summer "holidays"

7 weeks to fill for us. What are you all planning to do for activities for children? We are put off going to parks as toilets are closed and people are toiletting wherever 🤢 praying some sport activities can open up again or our 13 year old will likely be spending even more time sat in his room

Currently furloughed and because of that work has decided to force me to take most of my holiday. So if I’m back at work ( either working redundancy notice or unfurloughed) I’ll be leaving DS to occupy himself for the whole holiday as I’ll need to be shown to be working. Had hoped to take 2+ weeks of it off and DH 2 weeks so just 2 weeks alone. I know it could be worse, but this is pants. I either get made redundant or have to go through the rest of the year with 5days annual leave available.

mrsspooky · 21/06/2020 18:32

super awesome holiday fun! Theres so many options I cant keep up already, but I know Im lucky to have a garden!

ivykaty44 · 21/06/2020 18:39

parks by us have open public toilets
we take detail spray and wipes

TimeWastingButFun · 21/06/2020 18:42

Hoping to get abroad, fingers crossed!

Sobeyondthehills · 21/06/2020 18:42

I am going to try and do what we planned in the Easter, which was visiting family, day trip to London, summer club etc.

I am ignoring the fact that we might not be able to do it at the moment and my anxiety has now gotten so bad I am having panic attacks leaving my flat to take the rubbish out

Fuzzyspringroll · 21/06/2020 18:43

We only have four weeks to fill and DS could go to nursery for most of those. DH only has one week off, really. (I've worked all the way through...and DH for most of the time.)
However, I'll go and have my hair cut and get ready to start my new job in August, so anticipate having to read loads to catch up, make some resources and get my head around planning.
We'll be able to use our paddling pool in the garden and DS has a large play set and sandpit he enjoys. We'll go on bike rides and walks and just play. We'll invite some of his little friends for his birthday party in our garden, hopefully do some more playdates, might go to the outdoor pool in town and aim to visit our local theme park frequently. His settling in sessions at his new pre-school start as well, so we'll have to go there. It's probably a bit easier when they are smaller...don't know...

reefedsail · 21/06/2020 18:45

@wingsandstrings if you are anywhere near an Andrew Simpson sailing centre it is only £12.50 for Saturday sailing clubs. They will be open from 4th July.

nanbread · 21/06/2020 18:47

Almost everyone I know has holidays booked, mostly in classic UK summer holiday destinations or staying at a holiday home belonging to family / friends. That will kill a few weeks.

Some holiday clubs are open for kids too.

nanbread · 21/06/2020 18:48

@pinkazing you're entitled to unpaid parental leave... Not ideal perhaps but better than redundancy or burn out?

JaniceWebster · 21/06/2020 18:49

locally parks are opened, so football, skateboard, tennis, cycling ... for the days we can't take them away.

Everything should be reopened by the end of July anyway

LuluJakey1 · 21/06/2020 18:50

What we do now- walks, beach, countryside, picnics, paddling pool, garden. DH has promised to camp in the garden with DS1 and DD. I will be inside in bed. We have an old small VW camper that we sometimes take up the coast for the day. DH has camped with it with DS1 before.

If we can go somewhere in Britain on holiday we'll book a cottage but we're not thinking we'll be allowed.

WorstGovtEver · 21/06/2020 18:53

I cannot get my teen kids outside, it's a bloody nightmare, so probably will continue with home ed. They can catch up on the things they haven't done. Hmm Either they'll do it or go outside. Either way, not bad.

SpnBaby1967 · 21/06/2020 18:55

God knows!! My kidd hate walks having been maxed out on walks the last few months.

We're far away from the beach, we have a few lakes and things but most have had their car parks closed due to littering.

We live near a zoo but its serious ££££££ for us to go.

mumwon · 21/06/2020 18:55

please go to the zoos especially the small ones they desperately need the money

ginsparkles · 21/06/2020 18:59

More and more things are opening. So we will do parks, national trust places, zoo's gardens, beaches.

CMOTDibbler · 21/06/2020 19:01

It'll be the same as for the last however many weeks tbh. DH and I will be working (work are making us take compulsory time off, and none of these are in english school holidays, so I have 7 days in total for the rest of the year now). We'll get ds out cycling once a day, and maybe the odd day of kayaking will be on, but not much hope of anything else

KitKat1985 · 21/06/2020 19:02

Mostly it'll be a continuation of now. The DD's are booked into holiday clubs to cover the days me and DH both have to work. The rest of the time there will be lots of walking and picnics I suspect. We have NT membership so will probably try to book a few days out at NT places to visit some gardens etc. Will probably try to book a day at Chessington as well as the kids always enjoy it (personally think it might be more enjoyable with limited visitor numbers so no insane queues for every attraction). Probably pop to the beach a couple of times.

We are supposed to be going to Majorca for the last week of the school holidays (booked last November before Covid). It's looking like it might possibly happen, albeit I'm quite stressed about the idea of having to keep facemasks on the kids (5&3) whilst at the airport and on the plane.

Dreading September because my son has suffered from occasional school refusal. There is no motivation after months of absence

Same. It's going to be a bloody nightmare trying to get him in the school gates once he can go back as he now considers home schooling to be his norm and he hates change.

MillieMoodle · 21/06/2020 19:05

Hoping to get away to South Wales towards the end of August. Even if we can only go to the beach, it'll be a change of scenery for the DC.

SomewhereEast · 21/06/2020 19:05

I actually think most things will be open in some form by the summer hols so I'm not too pessimistic. If I didn't think that I would go slightly insane

springlike · 21/06/2020 19:07

Beach at the end of our road so paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, great cycle rides. Same as every summer minus the Florida holiday we had booked and lost a huge deposit on Hmm

1moreRep · 21/06/2020 19:09

if the schools are open mine will probably have to go in (key worker), on my days off (if they are not cancelled) we are planning to walk the dogs in nice countryside or beach walks, lots of baking and bike riding.

i have booked leave at the end of august so i'm hoping to be able to take it, may do a few days at my mums but that's it

Bleepbloopblarp · 21/06/2020 19:12

We’re going to be away in wales and Cornwall and I’m hoping things aren’t going to be too far from normal (ie walks, days spent at the beach). Toilets should be open by then - I can’t see them having the public loos shut in the summer holidays, it’d be carnage!

I think there will be more planning involved with food as we won’t probably be able to just pop to a cafe or restaurant but round here the park and play equipment is open and the park cafe and ice cream van etc are up and running. Pubs are also supposed to be opening in July, albeit maybe just the pub garden.

The only thing worrying me is trying to social distance in the winding Cornish streets and having to queue for supermarkets/shops etc.

Also I think quite a few attractions are supposed to be up and running by July. They need the money!

Maryann1975 · 21/06/2020 19:14

We have the added complication of dc moving to a new school in September, she was already not keen on the idea of transition, but that has been made 100 times worse with the lockdown.

autopilotpeach · 21/06/2020 19:19

lots of things, riding bikes, walks, feeding the ducks, paddling pool and water slide in the garden, water fights, water bombs, possibly putting up a tent in the garden, beach walks, watching beach sunsets, flying kites, picnics, will be trying to make up for no camping holiday this year, its lucky we are surrounded by beautiful nature, we seen a squirrel very close up the other week and ive only ever seen one that close before when it was stuffed in a glass display box Smile
