Would you go abroad by plane over the summer?

Assuming that the government will do yet another U-turn over travel quarantine on return to the UK, would you get a flight to say, Portugal for a holiday over the summer? I'm just curious how many would etc.

I hope not as want some good flight prices to either Greece or Spain for a villa

Fluffybutter · 22/06/2020 09:00

@MrsCollinssettled and I suppose the ones that don’t want to are the ones still sterilising their shopping , post and children every time they come in to the house and have been inside for 3 months incase someone even so much as walks along the other side of the street ..

thisstooshallpass · 22/06/2020 09:03

There will be restricted services onboard flights, too.

Dulra · 22/06/2020 09:06

No. We are in Ireland we were due to fly to Spain next week and UK in August but have postponed both until next year. We have booked a holiday in Ireland instead. Irish travel advice is still essential travel only which means travel insurance would not be valid plus there would be a 2 week quarantine when we return. I just don't think it would be a very enjoyable experience stressing about social distancing and catching the virus with so many people coming from different countries mixing together. Risks too high for my liking. I think countries like Spain and Italy are reopening too soon for economic reasons don't trust it is safe at all. Ireland has barely no community transmission so feel quite safe here and holidaying here should be pleasant enough

IAmReportingYouForBBQing · 22/06/2020 09:08

I've booked a trip to Corfu in August. We had two holidays cancelled this stunner and my kids are really struggling with mental health issues of lockdown so I just wanted something for them to look forward too tbh. If it doesn't go ahead we will camp in the uk and put the money towards Disney in 2021 . I am more hopeful for Corfu in August going ahead than our holiday to the canaries in November for some reason..... this was changed twice over the summer though so could be that!

Aragog · 22/06/2020 09:12

I suspect the people who will go will be the same people who went to beauty spots/shops at the first opportunity and were photographed ignoring social distancing whilst queuing. These are not the people I want to be travelling alongside

Not the case for us. We've been following the guidelines wherever possible, haven't driven for walks, having socialised in big groups, haven't met up with friends indoors, have only been to a supermarket a couple of times throughout, etc.
As said previously, I'm clinically vulnerable and have been taking precautions.
Hence why we are researching how safe it will be.

PhoneLock · 22/06/2020 09:30

If you are flying short/mid haul, no change there then.

zafferana · 22/06/2020 09:37

No, I wouldn't. It's not that I'm vulnerable or particularly worried for myself/my family with regard to CV-19, but the thought of sitting in a metal tube for hours with hundreds of strangers and recycled air during a respiratory virus pandemic strikes me as utter madness. Why on earth would anyone think it's a good idea? It's got to be the single easiest way to transmit this fucking thing! I think all air travel for leisure should be banned until the virus is under control worldwide. The fact that we're all dealing with this thing now is 100% thanks to air travel.

Sundiamond · 22/06/2020 10:15

Such interesting replies, thank you.

FWIW, several friends who work for the NHS would def not fly...

I think, for me, the decision will be made due to the general restrictions which will make spontaneity difficult and the holiday unrelaxing.

Yeah, but in my husbands plane, that way we can get back whenever we want to.

Or not so stealth, @Candyflosscookie. Who says that many people on MN are detached from the real world?

Monday11 · 22/06/2020 10:26

I will for my holiday in early September. I work from home and our office is going to be closed at least until the end of September, so if the 14 day so-called quarantine is in place, can meet it and still work.

Incidentally the way this has been introduced is indirectly more harmful to BAME people, as they are more likely to be in jobs where they cannot work from home, or wanting to travel to places to meet family, where the 14 day rule is likely to remain in place. So the impact on them is greater.

FilthyforFirth · 22/06/2020 10:30

I am hoping to get to France sometime in August/September but would rather travel by eurostar. We had a trip to WDW cancelled and I would beyond love to be able to take DS to DLP as a consolation. Only if Disney opens up will we go.

If not, I am hoping to holiday in the UK.

ineedaholidaynow · 22/06/2020 10:31

If I was going on holiday I would be checking and double checking my insurance cover, and whether it covers all eventualities under COVID eg need for self isolation but not actually ill.

Bluebell1995 · 22/06/2020 10:39

We have a holiday booked for Spain in August.

I read that the plane air circulation is a bit like a operating theatre HEPA filter, I might be wrong. Either way I would expect everyone would need to wear a face mask.

I would go, we're going to a very quiet resort. We self cater so happy to just get basics from the local supermarket if we're struggling to eat out. We're usually on a very limited budget anyway so eating in our apartment is what we usually do.

I've been working on the front line every working day and dealing closely with Covid-19 patients on wards and critical care. I think that makes me feel less worried about coming into contact with Covid. Maybe it should make me more worried, but it doesn't!

I took out the pandemic insurance option on my policy in early March, cost me an extra £70.

IcedPurple · 22/06/2020 10:44

Well, I wouldn't want to be travelling alongside a judgey pants who instead of enjoying their holiday, spends their time obsessing over who is or isn't 'flouting' the roolz. So everyone's happy then!

Iwalkinmyclothing · 22/06/2020 10:48

No, fancying a holiday is never a good enough reason to get on a plane. Nothing to do with Covid for me, it just seems idiotic to know what is happening to the environment and continue to merrily overconsume without any actual need to do so.

But on here saying so seems to upset people so very much, apparently it's just mean (or sad/ boring if you're going for the playground bully approach) to point out to people that they are contributing to fucking the world up on an unimaginable scale because they want to be somewhere warmer for a week or two.

tubbatops · 22/06/2020 10:54

I wouldn't book anything because I assume if you can't go you won't get your money back. Eg if you are told you need to self isolate due to contamination in your "bubble".

timeforawine · 22/06/2020 11:07

@MrsCollinssettled

The only place i have been is the supermarket once a week for all of 10 minutes a time, avoiding people while i'm in there, this has only been the last 3 weeks too, before that i went no-where, so i have followed the rules very strictly so if i can go on holiday i bloody well will so i can have a change of scene and a break from cooking, we're booked all inclusive and the hotel have good plans in place re meals inc takeaway to your room options. My insurance is very good cover and has been in place for years and does cover COVID related issues. I am happy to wear a mask around the airport/on the plane/coach etc and will take plenty of hand gel
Hopeisnotastrategy · 22/06/2020 11:20

Some of us still haven't got home yet since March! 🤣

Angelonia · 22/06/2020 11:25

Assuming it is allowed, we are planning a short break in the UK this year (we usually go abroad). Partly because I'm worried about getting stuck somewhere if quarantine rules change unexpectedly, and partly because I want to support the UK tourism industry.

giantangryrooster · 22/06/2020 11:28

pigeon999 and certainly would not want to be in the grim state hospitals of most european hospitals bar France.

I'm Scandinavian, and quite insulted by this ☹️. Educate yourself, yes there are places you wouldn't like to end up, but do you really think your health care has done so much better than most other countries?

pigeon999 · 22/06/2020 11:31

I don't think Sweden is on the air bridge list yet, so I was talking about the countries that are! I travelled all over Europe for three years, and had the unfortunate experience of being in Greek and Spanish state hospitals, I still have a rather messy patched up scar to prove it :)

So although I can not speak for the WHOLE of Europe the E111 card will only cover state hospitals, and not private hospitals and the two experiences could not be any further apart!!

blue25 · 22/06/2020 11:39

No, not worth the stress and risk of getting ill. We’ll wait until next year.
