Would you go abroad by plane over the summer?

Assuming that the government will do yet another U-turn over travel quarantine on return to the UK, would you get a flight to say, Portugal for a holiday over the summer? I'm just curious how many would etc.

I don't think we would be keen on seeing anyone that has been overseas afterwards with so much exposure to possible covid.

This thread has made me realise some people are ready to a big risk with their health, and that of their children.
I am going to be checking going forward before agreeing to meet up with friends and family to see if they have travelled/planning to travel. As my children and I could be exposed if we see them after a trip, and whilst it is fine if they want to put themselves at risk by travelling during a pandemic, but it is not okay to make that decision for us as well.
So I am going to be very careful who we see this summer after reading this thread.

@Delilahbucket Italy's borders to all EU countries have been open since 3rd June. Your trouble is UK travel advice will stop you from getting travel insurance probably. What I would say is, Italian healthcare on the whole is very good. The South is probably a bit less reliable honestly, but my experience of Italian hospitals has never been anything other than positive, with very very high hygiene standards. I went to hospital recently and the set up at the moment is good: temperatures checks and people on the door on the way in, masks being checked, hand gel squirted on, etc. Appointment spaced out, well managed. Plus Italian cases in Sicily are very very low and have been consistently. You'd be bringing over more risk frankly.

**take

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/06/2020 07:47

@MrsCollinssettled

I suspect the people who will go will be the same people who went to beauty spots/shops at the first opportunity and were photographed ignoring social distancing whilst queuing. These are not the people I want to be travelling alongside.
Or the people who haven’t seen their family abroad for a very long time, or who have been saving for years for their holiday and don’t want to miss it after a shitty few months, or who just desperately need a break.
rookiemere · 22/06/2020 07:53

I suspect the people not flying when they are allowed to by the FCO are the same folks who bleach their shopping and told people off for eating crisps on park benches when out for a walk and shout at you if you don't throw yourself onto the road for them, so I'm glad they're not going.

TimeForLunch · 22/06/2020 08:01

Yes! Recently booked flight and villa in the Algarve for the 10th July and can't wait. The kids are so excited after the endless weeks of homeschooling and little else. The area we are going to is fully open and masks not required, other than on the plane.

Pertella · 22/06/2020 08:02

Oh look, another sneery post by someone who doesn't want to do something and so thinks no one else should either. Hmm

Pertella · 22/06/2020 08:05

So I am going to be very careful who we see this summer after reading this thread.

I'm sure they'll be gutted...

star356789 · 22/06/2020 08:06

Not sure about the summer I was supposed to go to a family wedding in Thailand in April it has been rebooked for December now so I'm hoping I can go to that if the travel is allowed and I don't need to self isolate when I get there I will be going

Aragog · 22/06/2020 08:08

Possibly; despite being clinically vulnerable we've been looking to see how it might work and whether it can be made safe. We are also looking at tunnel and ferry options (though normally hate the latter) as we would like to get away somewhere. We were supposed to be going long haul on a bigger holiday so that won't happen.

We do have a long haul flight booked for October half term at the very least.

OnceUponACat · 22/06/2020 08:09

Yes. Definitely.

OnceUponACat · 22/06/2020 08:12

And no I am not one of “those” who went to beauty spots etc. I have been at home since March. Have not set foor in a supermarket or anywhere except local park. Have not met with friends or anything else. But I want to go and see my family and see my country so it is a risk I am willing to take if the numbers are as they are. And let’s face it, everywhere in the EU is safer than the UK. It would be on their interested to not want us not the other way round!

tiredanddangerous · 22/06/2020 08:17

No. We were meant to be going to Majorca in August but we’ve chosen to cancel and lose our deposit. It’s pretty clear there would be restrictions for the pool/beach and god knows what would happen with the buffet meals in the hotel!

If we were self catering in a villa/apartment I might have felt differently, but even then I’d worry about bars/restaurants being accessible.

OutOfHours · 22/06/2020 08:18

No

Rubyupbeat · 22/06/2020 08:19

Yeah, but in my husbands plane, that way we can get back whenever we want to.
We would only do as far as europe in it.

thisstooshallpass · 22/06/2020 08:21

Worth googling 'TUI resort covid restrictions' if considering that type of package holiday.

Gives detailed points about how resorts are going to operate.

maddy68 · 22/06/2020 08:26

Yes. The filters on planes contrary to popular belief , filter out viruses however the right so comes from the airport itself (much the same as the supermarket)

ImAncient · 22/06/2020 08:30

Doesn’t it depend where you are going? We are 🤞going to Cyprus to stay in my parents house which has its own pool. End of July. If they allow the Brits in.

Cyprus had very few cases due to the proper lockdown they did unlike here. They are currently people testing at the airport on arrival so yes I should imagine more on top of it than the UK. And I bleach my delivery shopping (I’m isolating).

Also if we get ill over there we are in what is effectively our second home.

We probably won’t be going out much just staying at my parents very nice house & seeing family at a social distance.

I’m not sure I’d go if I was staying in a hotel though!

Wiaa · 22/06/2020 08:32

I would if I wasn't taking the dc but I wouldn't take the dc just because I imagine it will be a bit of a nightmare in the airport and dc4 would probably have to wear a mask, which he'd mess with constantly

GinWithRosie · 22/06/2020 08:37

The flight wouldn't bother me at all...but honestly, I don't think a 'holiday' sounds much fun right now with all the restrictions still in place. I'd rather stay home...there's very little opening up still, no nightlife to speak of, eating out won't be the same...I'll save my money until I can guarantee the experience will be worthwhile.

areyoubeingserviced · 22/06/2020 08:43

Dh- yes
Me- No, as others have said, the opening of hotels and airports is economic.
I don’t want to fall ill in another country.

BabyLlamaZen · 22/06/2020 08:46

Nope. Maybe if I could apparate myself into a beautiful remote villa in Europe somewhere. But there is the whole plane situation.

I also dont feel great going into restaurants and shops, seeing how quickly countries in europe have gone down before.

I suppose maybe next year :(

timeforawine · 22/06/2020 08:47

Yep, looks like my August holiday might go ahead and if it does i'll be on that plane :-D

PhoneLock · 22/06/2020 08:52

I suspect the people who will go will be the same people who went to beauty spots/shops at the first opportunity and were photographed ignoring social distancing whilst queuing. These are not the people I want to be travelling alongside

I our case, you could be further from the truth. The furthest I have been is the local supermarket every ten days or so. My husband hasn't even gone that far. We have followed the guidelines to the letter in and will continue to do so.

PhoneLock · 22/06/2020 08:53

Couldn't be further from the truth. Duh!
