To get the rage every time my DH places the Tesco order?

When lock down started, and booking delivery slots was difficult, I downloaded the apps for a few supermarkets and randomly tried at various times of the day to secure a slot. To process the booking that far in advance, I just ordered random items off our favourites lists. DH would then amend before the deadline.

AIBU to be totally enraged with DH, that for the fifth week running, we've had duplicate items or unnecessary items that he insists I have ordered, when I've told him weekly that I add random items to hold the booking and to amend as necessary. Every week he says yes, yes. Then does it again!

He is a pretty good DH, but we're meant to be watching every penny (he is under threat of redundancy) and yet he duplicates some of the order presumably because he can't be assed to check. AIBU?

(Full disclosure - this was happening from the start of lock down, but I just assumed it was due to stock issues or substitutions.
DH is amending the order as he is furloughed and I'm now working full time self employed, so need to offload some responsibilities.
I only add about ten items, so not massive amounts to check through)

Thanks @Ernies

Haha can’t you put her preferred cat food in the trolley as a placeholder Or do they not sell it? Online food shopping seems to be a minefield!

MarcelineMissouri · 21/06/2020 07:41

@Itsjustabitofbanter that’s not the case. It’s a minimum of £40 to avoid paying an additional delivery charge but you are free to order less than £40 and pay that charge (an extra £4) I have done my shopping online with Tesco for 9 years now so I promise you can checkout with just a single item in your basket. I do this every week to get my slot and then just amend the order the day before it’s due.

AlternativePerspective · 21/06/2020 07:45

Yabu my DP managed to order 35 pints of milk which arrived last Sunday. 😂
I did that once with 21 1 kg blocks of cheese. Shock I was shopping with Ocado at the time and fortunately they rang beforehand to check if the number was correct.

I am shielding and if I get a slot I do tend to add £40 worth even if it’s Tesco. The danger is that if you order just one item and that item goes out of stock the order will be cancelled.

ohoneohtwo · 21/06/2020 07:49

the minimum order to reserve a Tesco slot is £40. You can’t just stick a pint of milk or loaf of bread in to reserve it

Yes, you can. Have you tried or are you just guessing you can't and posting it as fact?

Sceptre86 · 21/06/2020 07:52

He is an idiot but you should be telling him that. Talk to him and explain that this is something you need him to take full responsibility for. I do our shopping online for click and collect. I add to my basket throughout the week and then book when a slot becomes available, basically do it in reverse to you. I then get dh to double check and amend if necessary before checking out. I will then amend the order if I need to later on in the week.

Instead of adding random stuff to secure your booking I would add the staples like milk, bread, eggs and he should then be able to take over from there. Doing an online shop should not be beyond him. It is the fact that he is inconsiderate that I would have a problem with.

Bluesheep8 · 21/06/2020 07:56

Have you both fully functioning bodies and a car?

Exactly. This is why I haven't ordered any shopping for delivery since lockdown started. The delivery slots should be left for those who really need them imo.Hmm

SteelyPanther · 21/06/2020 07:57

You only need to put one item in your basket to secure the delivery.
Then amend your basket the day before your delivery.

@Whatifitallgoesright and @Bluesheep8

OP clearly says ‘we are both high risk (I'm working from home)’ so no need for the snarkiness, she is perfectly entitled to the slots.

You're quite right. I hadn't read it properly. I stand corrected.

lootsharks · 21/06/2020 08:16

Why should your dh sort out your daft 'system' ?

Home42 · 21/06/2020 08:18

I hold my order with tequila! I like tequila so am not too worried if I accidentally get 2 extra bottles delivered Grin

SorrySadDog · 21/06/2020 08:19

I put the usual weekly stuff in, comes to £40. Then I have until 8pm on Saturday night to take some stuff off or add some stuff. It’s pretty easy.

If he’s incapable I’d say you should do it

Sertchgi123 · 21/06/2020 08:20

@Browzingss

You’re in the wrong, your plan is flawed tbh. Why can’t you do what everyone else does and add an expensive bottle of alcohol instead to reserve the slot? That’s much easier to point out as a placeholder, vs random crap that he can’t be 100% sure is a placeholder or not
Rubbish, we don’t do that.
lottiegarbanzo · 21/06/2020 08:25

FGS, if a supermarket allows you to place an order, you may place, enjoy and positively revel in the convenience of online ordering and delivery - even if you are entirely able and available to go to the supermarket yourself.

Supermarkets all long-ago re-jigged their ordering systems to favour those in need. If, after that, they have allowed you to place an order, and you want one, use it!

The self-satisfied sanctimoniousness of some posters on MN never ceases. As hobbies go, I prefer cycling.

lootsharks · 21/06/2020 08:26

We don't either, I add the regulars and that's enough for a place holder.

RTFT and STFU.
TheGreatWave · 21/06/2020 08:35

Sainsbury's you have to do a £25 minimum to check out, so it does vary from shop to shop.

There are plenty of slots where I am, just checked and I can even get a Morrisons one tomorrow night, and then a good selection Weds -Sat on Sainsbury's. Morrisons recently sent me a free delivery pass offer so I am not entirely convinced that there is a major issue getting slots (in some areas at least)

MintyCedric · 21/06/2020 08:36

@Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches

I never thought of holding the order with champagne / other expensive alcohol. Makes so much sense!
Until you amend your order in a rush at the last minute and forget it's in there!

The other week I thought my slot was a day further on so missed the chance to amend.

My entire weekly shop comprised of vodka, prosecco, pre mixed cocktails, yoghurt, biscuits, Curly Wurlys and 2 steaks.

Ulysses · 21/06/2020 08:36

I use Tesco and add in all the items from a previous delivery, then amend the day before it's due (they send a text reminder anyway). I delete things that are no longer applicable, meal plan for the week and add in things that I need from the shopping list I've got on Alexa.

I do it all though.

Hopeislost · 21/06/2020 08:37

I just go into my previous orders and there's the option to reorder everything you had in a previous order. That way I figure, if I forget to edit, I'll at least get a full week's shopping.

madcatladyforever · 21/06/2020 08:38

I expect your husband finds this tedious womens work and is hoping you will take it over.

Coffeeandbeans · 21/06/2020 08:41

I just put a loaf of bread on my order to reserve the slot. As I add more stuff over the two weeks the £4 goes.

Crockodoodle · 21/06/2020 08:41

lottiegarbanzo Grin

Fucking shoot me. I've got TWO home deliveries booked next week

nettie434 · 21/06/2020 08:41

Concise and accurate PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock! Plus availability varies between different parts of the country and between supermarkets. Things have changed from the first few weeks when supermarkets were struggling to deliver to vulnerable people in their area.

lubeybooby · 21/06/2020 08:41

I started meal planning and have 7 shopping lists saved on the site (a ballache to do at first but worth it now) with week numbers, week 1 etc up to 7

To grab the slot I just hit whichever random week I get to first (sometimes the right one!) and go through checkout.

However this is only for evening meals. I have to go in and edit if we want lunches and breakfasts and snacks and cleaning supplies, cat food etc

It works quite well for me anyway as forgetting to edit just isn't an option
