Dishwasher emptying/filling

Please settle a ‘dispute’ between DP and me. When emptying and filling the dishwasher, do you empty the whole thing of clean dishes then fill the whole thing with dirty dishes OR empty the bottom layer first and then fill the bottom layer, repeating this process with the top layer. Not important I know-but I really would like some outside perspective because I can’t get on board with his way and he can’t get his head around mine.

YABU-empty it all then fill all
YANBU-empty bottom, fill bottom, empty top, fill top.

Always empty then fill, although as there's only 2 of us, it doesn't tend to get full in one go.

I regard it as a cupboard for dirty dishes, tbh. It's only a slimline one and we only tend to put it on every other day.

Franticbutterfly · 20/06/2020 19:50

Empty it all at once. Then start to fill.

spicedemerald · 20/06/2020 19:56

@RitaMorenoMuppetShow I do this too!! But. Also know it’s wrong Blush

the one who does the work gets to choose.

But I think it weird and hygenic to put dirty items in a cabinet that already contains clean things.

You need two dishwashers.

pinktaxi · 20/06/2020 20:28

Empty it all, then refil with the dirty dishes.

pinktaxi · 20/06/2020 20:30

Problem with his way, is he is handling dirty dishes, with smeared grease and stale food, when he restocks the bottom, then using mucky greasy hands to take out the clean cups and glasses. That's a logical reason to empty it first.

Sandybval · 20/06/2020 20:31

Empty all of it when the cycle is done...

Concestor · 20/06/2020 20:33

I empty it all and then fill it, DP empties bits and fills those bits, and it's painful to watch. It makes no sense to do it like that.

violetbunny · 20/06/2020 20:41

If he wants to do it his way, then invest in some dish drawers. They're designed for exactly that purpose. Otherwise, he needs to get with the programme!

FinallyHere · 20/06/2020 20:46

Two dishwashers.

Use from clean, load dirty into the 'other' machine. Simples.

passthemustard · 20/06/2020 20:48

@notso OMG your kids put things in the dishwasher????

randomchap · 20/06/2020 21:16

We had a lodger who used to load the bowls face to face like this:

()()()

Rather than by the correct method ((((((

At least he emptied it completely first.

TurquoiseDress · 20/06/2020 21:18

Get all the clean stuff out before any dirty things go on...those are the rules...no debate!

TheShapeJaper · 20/06/2020 21:21

Empty it. It takes around 60 seconds

notso · 20/06/2020 21:27

Not sure I get the point of a dishwasher if you end up having dirty dishes around, instead of just putting everything in as you go and keep a clean kitchen.
Agree, surely the beauty of a dishwasher is that it's a cupboard for dirty dishes so they're not hanging round the kitchen.

@passthemustard they certainly do! If anything gets left near the sink they have to wash it by hand. They all have their own plates and cups so I can and will hunt the culprit down Grin

passthemustard · 20/06/2020 21:34

@notso I’m so jealous, I can’t even get mine to bring mugs out of their bedrooms. My neighbours must hate me screaming ‘where are all the mugs’ at regular intervals 😂

notso · 20/06/2020 21:50

@passthemustard I did have to lure the dishes down from the older DC's rooms. I'd ask sweetly if they want a brew/snack/lunch, the answer is always yes and they magically appear to hear "but oh dear you can't, your dishes aren't in the cupboard" they soon learned to come prepared! Grin
The younger two aren't allowed any dishes anywhere but the kitchen table!

Lovely1a2b3c · 20/06/2020 22:06

I honestly thought everyone emptied completely and then filled the dishwasher!

At the very least he should probably be washing his hands after stacking the bottom of the dishwasher before moving on to unstacking the clean dishes!

MerryDeath · 20/06/2020 23:00

eww it must be emptied in its entirety! but i like to keep up with the dw so don't have to reload more than a bit or two anyway. irrelevant in my house anyway as DH is not learned in the ancient and mysterious art of dishwasher stacking.

bluefoxmug · 20/06/2020 23:03

empty the whole thing at once.
fill gradually as soon as dishes get dirty.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 20/06/2020 23:06

I generally do it like your DH - I empty the bottom first then refill, something to do with the cutlery basket I think.
Sometimes I empty the whole thing.
DH does it your way but neither of us get too het up by the other being different.
