Dishwasher emptying/filling

Please settle a ‘dispute’ between DP and me. When emptying and filling the dishwasher, do you empty the whole thing of clean dishes then fill the whole thing with dirty dishes OR empty the bottom layer first and then fill the bottom layer, repeating this process with the top layer. Not important I know-but I really would like some outside perspective because I can’t get on board with his way and he can’t get his head around mine.

YABU-empty it all then fill all
YANBU-empty bottom, fill bottom, empty top, fill top.

You're right, he's wrong. About both the dishwasher emptying & about the mn opinion on it Grin

Bagelsandbrie · 20/06/2020 18:29

Empty the whole thing. But we generally fill it up as we go - we don’t leave things on the side. When it’s full it goes on. We do about 2/3 washes a day!

dementedpixie · 20/06/2020 18:31

I dont want to handle dirty dishes then handle clean ones so I empty the full thing and then load with dirty dishes

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 20/06/2020 18:47

Empty bottom shelf
Empty top shelf
Fill

Yup. This.

Topseyt · 20/06/2020 18:54

Empty the whole thing before refilling with anything that is waiting. Doing anything else makes no sense at all.

Oysterbabe · 20/06/2020 18:59

Empty bottom shelf
Empty top shelf
Fill

This is the correct method. Like others, I don't want to handle clean things then dirty things then clean things again.

StrangeAddiction · 20/06/2020 19:03

I empty it fully, ds1 does it the other way.

BellaVita · 20/06/2020 19:06

Empty first then refill.

angelikacpickles · 20/06/2020 19:07

I agree with your DP - much more efficient!

notso · 20/06/2020 19:07

I empty it and usually fend off the kids trying to put their breakfast things in before it's empty. More than once the clean items on the bottom have been drizzled with milk, cold tea or yogurt Angry

2007Millie · 20/06/2020 19:09

YABU

Empty all then fill

AriettyHomily · 20/06/2020 19:11

Empty bottom layer, fill bottom layer. Empty top layer, fill top layer.

However there are four of us and we only have space for a slimline so there's pretty much always a full load to go back in.

Alsohuman · 20/06/2020 19:17

Empty it completely, top rack first as soon as the cycle finishes. Then add the two dirty mugs and plates to start the next load. I’ve never heard of anyone doing it the other way.

MarshaBradyo · 20/06/2020 19:18

Empty all

Then load

campfiresburning · 20/06/2020 19:23

He doesn’t like being wrong

I can see that being a problem for him given that he so clearly is!

SpringerMonster · 20/06/2020 19:26

I empty bottom shelf and then 'refill' it - its usually just one or two things though.
Then I wash my hands before emptying the top shelf.
I find it easier on my back i think. My partner thinks I'm weird.

RhodaDendron · 20/06/2020 19:27

Your way makes the most sense. His way - I can’t even.

looselegs · 20/06/2020 19:28

Empty it all in the morning, then just put dirty stuff in during the day as they're used.
Why would you put dirty stuff in when there's clean stuff still in there?

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/06/2020 19:30

Either way is fine.
I tend to empty it when it is finished before I have any dirty dishes to put in.
But if you are emptying it and putting in dirty dishes at the same time, his method is perfectly hygenic and acceptable. I would not force a partner to use same method as myself as that is minimum rude, maximum controlling. (Unless you have diagnosed OCD).

flatwhiteagain · 20/06/2020 19:31

Empty all then fill. Although my dh insists on rinsing everything and then wiping down before it goes in the DW. Drives me crazy as he takes plates out I've put in to rinse them 🤦‍♀️

Leolion09 · 20/06/2020 19:36

Empty it all first here!

ZolaGrey · 20/06/2020 19:37

I empty bottom, fill.
Empty top, fill.

My partner empties it all and then fills it, usually badly but I keep that to myself.

JaniceWebster · 20/06/2020 19:41

empty 1st thing in the morning, so there's nothing dirty that needs to go in anyway.

Run at lunch time if it's full, and always last thing in the evening.

Not sure I get the point of a dishwasher if you end up having dirty dishes around, instead of just putting everything in as you go and keep a clean kitchen.

RitaMorenoMuppetShow · 20/06/2020 19:41

I empty it all too, but then again I do sock, shoe, sock, shoe so don’t listen to me.

Danni91 · 20/06/2020 19:42

I have a box of a house and an even boxier kitchen which means I would

Empty clean bottom rack of plates, bowls & cutlery direct into cupboard
Fill bottom rack up from sink/side
Empty top which is usually annoying fiddly cups, glasses, utensils, odd pan, cheese grater etc
Refill

But we do ours probably twice a day on average but always at least once.

Its about 12 ft length & 5ft width, including sideboard and whitegoods. It's a very small kitchen and gets messy in one meal
