I’m guessing OP has never heard the saying ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing’ if she thinks unfollowing is brave.

^This with bells on. We've seen where the anti-semitism in Nazi Germany led to.

Oh come off it, I'm not saying it's inevitable, but it's an example of what can happen. It's happened at plenty of other times too, all those years of slavery as another example. And what's happening in the US now.

annabel85 · 20/06/2020 11:48

@Clavinova

It's making me so depressed that they just can't grasp the very simple argument behind BLM or the trans movement or even brexit.

they all did the black Tuesday and some wrote heart felt posts about how awful racism is and how shocking that it still going on. But now they want to protect statues of Winston Churchill ...

Seems a bit unrealistic to expect people to change their opinion on Brexit now - or to agree that statues of Winston Churchill should be defaced and torn down.

Sadly, the BLM movement lost a lot of support in UK when Churchill statue was defaced and the Cenotaph vandalised during BLM protests. The fact these mass gatherings were taking place when the country was locked down and following social distancing guidelines (including missing funerals and not seeing family) didn't go down too well either.

The cancel culture is also counter productive. Fawlty Towers, statues, street names, even rugby songs now under threat is insanity. A lot of people feel their culture is suddenly being eroded and history is being almost wiped out and feel uneasy about where it's all heading.

What started out earnestly with reacting to the horror of an appalling police killing in America is heading into increasingly bizarre directions. Especially in America where they seem to have lost their minds during the pandemic.

How long are these protests going to go on? A lot of it is cabin fever now after several weeks. Nothing else to do at the weekend so lets protest.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/06/2020 11:53

i agree @annabel

quite worrying.
however i think any protests in uk are over.

I think at least some of the trouble makers are bored teenagers who have too much free time on their hands as well. We really need schools to start again in September. And furloughed employees to be working as well.

The initial protests were well handled and dignified and they were attempting to social distance, wearing masks and bringing hand gel. I suspect a lot of them are frustrated at how it's been hijacked by trouble makers,

I can see that it won't go down well when white people lecture black protesters about social distancing when they're being more impacted by COVID-19 so of course they're aware of it. And the pandemic is part of the reason why they're so angry as well. They've also agreed as a community that it's such an important issue that they're risking their health in order to make people listen.

annabel85 · 20/06/2020 12:08

I can see that it won't go down well when white people lecture black protesters about social distancing when they're being more impacted by COVID-19 so of course they're aware of it.

But a lot of the protesters have been young white people, pretty much the least at risk demographic but they still carry and spread the virus.

GreytExpectations · 20/06/2020 12:15

*I don't think anybody care if you support BLM or not (I don't), I think people care though, if you happen to be taking this time to make more of a point about how much you dislike and disagree with BLM instead of focusing on how much you hate and dislike racism.

It's the same with looting, sure hate the looters, but you are feeling more rage about the broken stores than you do racism and spend more time complaining about looters online and offline than talking and complaining about racism, then YES, maybe, you are a little prejudiced, and/or just not that bothered by racism.*

This is so well said and I 100% agree with everything you are saying @Linning it's quite telling how defensive the OP is being regarding not calling out her colleague.

Mittens030869 · 20/06/2020 12:18

Yes a lot of protesters are white. But I clearly wasn't talking about them, was I?

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/06/2020 12:19

but have the protests carried the virus?
do we know that?
not yet

Yes I read the title- you mention hiding the colleague, not calling them out. You are happy to be complacent about racism and not challenge it. You think hiding them is good enough when it's not, it's just cowardly and means nothing when they don't know why. Here is news for you: racism is an uncomfortable subject, you think it's difficult to talk about? Well imagine how difficult it is to be a victim of it. Just because someone is a work colleague doesn't mean they should get away with racist, sexist, homophobic or any other descrimatory comments. Like I said earlier, if you aren't willing to call out and challenge racism than you aren't anti-racist. And also everything @Linning said as well allies to my comment
CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/06/2020 12:30

so not true

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/06/2020 12:30

Nope, didn't say you were a racist. Please show me where I said that?

Here is a hint: not being anti-racist is NOT the same as being racist.

Also, how is what is aid not true? You clearly said you wouldn't not call these people out because it made you uncomfortable. Did you not say that?

GreytExpectations · 20/06/2020 12:39

Stupid typos. Meant you said you wouldn't call them out.

ilovesooty · 20/06/2020 12:39

@Ffsnosexallowed

I'd call them out on their racism. And have done.
Ditto.
ilovesooty · 20/06/2020 12:42

@bolderbaking

hide them because they are from work, this is real life

racism and racist discrimination is also real, you know?

however i am not going to call stupid work colleagues out on it, I cannot change their attitudes, they are entrenched.

Unfortunately a lot of these people can't be challenged.

you aren't really much better than them, sorry. It is beyond me how one can possibly remain silent in these instances. Your covert non-reaction which is unfortunately much more the norm than the exception will enable the status quo to remain.

Well said.

REally?? did you not read the title of my thread?

The title of your thread is about hiding the posts. Do you really think that’s the same as calling people out for racism? You won’t even make an anonymous complaint OP. Words are cheap.

Gulabjamoon · 20/06/2020 12:53

OP clearly hasn’t received the pat on the head she was looking for Hmm.

And it’s very strange to describe reading racist posts as ‘irresistible’ OP. As if it’s all entertainment for you.

This is so true. OP is just not pleased she hasn't received a "well done" from people on here. Racism won't stop if people don't challenge it, ignoring it is a huge part of the problem.
Cadent · 20/06/2020 13:02

Totally agree @GreytExpectations

And also hilarious and telling that OP is only agreeing with the poster who is against the #BLM protests
