To be so irritated by poor spelling and vocabulary?

OK, it could be weeks of lockdown having finally got to me, but when I just read two posts with the phrases, ‘couldn’t get passed,’ (meaning ‘past’) and ‘by her own omission,’ (meaning ‘admission’), I felt compelled to start an AIBU. It’s bad enough reading the FB ‘Your doing great’ and ‘I love you’re new dog’ posts. Oh, ‘their’ much worse at spelling on FB...etc. Yes, in these turbulent times, I know I shouldn’t be wasting my energies on such crap, but sometimes focusing on trivia keeps us sane. So, AIBU? Anyone else as irritated as I am?

YANBU, but you may get flamed.

'Should of' is the worst

Mumblechum0 · 20/06/2020 00:00

It does grate on me, too.

I’d never pick up on it on a thread though. I wonder whether it’s an age thing; I’m ancient and correct spelling and grammar were drummed into us in the 60s and 70s, whereas DS’s (grammar) school we’re relatively relaxed about errors.

DdraigGoch · 20/06/2020 00:00

I agree but don your tin helmet...

Mumblechum0 · 20/06/2020 00:00

Bugger! I blame autocorrect for that blooper 😁

botheritagain · 20/06/2020 00:01

My life is a constant battle between wanting friends and wanting to correct their grammar on Facebook Grin

YAB quite U, yes. Lots of people post from mobiles which means autocorrect can mess up what you type. And it doesn’t matter that much on a forum!

indemMUND · 20/06/2020 00:09

Very irritated. If people have such a point to make, the least they could do is type it out coherently. They had an education they were provided with. People are so willing to spill their guts over their opinion but lose credit by being lazy with spelling and grammar. Make your point and utilise the skills you were taught. Anyone can fume online, but it's more credible if you actually connect your brain to your fingers.

I can’t believe you wrote this and meant it seriously.
QuestionableMouse · 20/06/2020 00:14

Poor spelling and grammar makes it harder to understand what the poster is talking about. I've clicked on a post, seen a wall of text that's hard to read due to this and hit back. I'm dyslexic and I just can't get through it.

U for you really winds me up. Two more letters. Not exactly strenuous...

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 20/06/2020 00:15

Not everyone has youre priviledge IndemMOUND

Allinadaystwerk · 20/06/2020 00:15

It does grate on me a bit but remember not everyone has had a good education. Some people just do not know the fundamentals of good puntuation, spelling and grammar. Does not mean they should not be allowed to post without being judged. I tend to push through it and accept the effort even though it hurts my brain a little

Blueuggboots · 20/06/2020 00:16

You'll get flamed and people will mention dyslexia etc....been there done that....😂😂😂

Grapesoda7 · 20/06/2020 00:16

As the parent of dyslexic children, YABVU.
Spelling and grammar are just so difficult for some people, it doesn't mean that what somebody has written is any less valid because it contains spelling errors.

indemMUND · 20/06/2020 00:16

@lankylemon Isn't that the beauty of typing a comment online though? I could be totally serious or satirical. It's up for anyone reading to interpret Grin

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 20/06/2020 00:16

YANBU the world is changing into a place where being accurate isn’t accepted though. I get ridiculed for being so anal about it and colleagues actually get angry at me proof reading and correcting. It’s part of my job!

indemMUND · 20/06/2020 00:18

I don't claim to have any privilege, but it's "Mund" for the sake of being pedantic given the nature of the thread Grin

candilemon · 20/06/2020 00:18

If I come across a grammatical error, I stop reading. It’s simple.

candilemon · 20/06/2020 00:21

Does everyone know how to spell privilege?

BeBraveAndBeKind · 20/06/2020 00:21

It used to seriously irritate me and I judged people on it. Then I made a friend who is dyslexic. We've had quite a few conversations about how being judged on something that's outside his control makes him feel and it's pretty heartbreaking. Now I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt when I see poor spelling and grammar.

Colom · 20/06/2020 00:23

I think it's very arrogant to judge people so harshly on spelling. Yes, I wince sometimes when it's really bad but would never get angry about it. Both of my parents were forced to leave school at 13 and rarely did a full week when they were there.

Growing up they had to get me to proof read letters and forms etc. their text messages are often littered with spelling mistakes.

Considering the appalling upbringing they had - how could I be angry at that?

These threads are daft anyway as they always include swathes of posters frothing about grammar when they don't articulate themselves very well either!

candilemon · 20/06/2020 00:23

I disagree that being accurate isn’t accepted. Being accurate is absolutely necessary if you want to be taken seriously.

candilemon · 20/06/2020 00:24

It’s not all about spelling, though.

candilemon · 20/06/2020 00:25

when they don't articulate themselves very well either!

You make them sound like lorries. 😆

WeirdEar · 20/06/2020 00:25

A parent posted today 'my daughters name done so well on her spellings, then she past her grammer test'

I was cringing so hard
