To be so irritated by poor spelling and vocabulary?

OK, it could be weeks of lockdown having finally got to me, but when I just read two posts with the phrases, ‘couldn’t get passed,’ (meaning ‘past’) and ‘by her own omission,’ (meaning ‘admission’), I felt compelled to start an AIBU. It’s bad enough reading the FB ‘Your doing great’ and ‘I love you’re new dog’ posts. Oh, ‘their’ much worse at spelling on FB...etc. Yes, in these turbulent times, I know I shouldn’t be wasting my energies on such crap, but sometimes focusing on trivia keeps us sane. So, AIBU? Anyone else as irritated as I am?

@HansBanans
I often defiantly write to my mp.

For me when I text it is such a fast process, designed to be quick and I'll deliberately use words such as 'tho' and ignore typos. I have a degree in English and know how to spell but I think typing on social media is more like dropping ts when I speak to friends. I would say, for example 'matter' in a meeting but might drop it to 'mahe-er' with friends. I'm fortunate to have no issues with language too. I am irritated when reading professional literature that is incorrect but I feel social media with people you do not know is a completely different matter.

fortunacookie · 20/06/2020 01:04

On FB other day I saw 'det chair' Hmm

Even my phone won't type it wrong ! I had to stop myself commenting as the woman is big and butch !Shock

AnyOneThere123 · 20/06/2020 01:05

@SchrodingersImmigrant thanks. I have actually got a CELTA qualification to teach English.... lols. I will have to learn everything to do with tenses etc.

"Dyslexia is word blindness, dyslexics see letters back to front. I realise there are different degrees of it but it's fairly easy to spot."

Lynda07 - did you read that in the Ladybird book on dyslexia? Perhaps you should do some proper research - my dd is dyslexic and she categorically does not see letters back to front Hmm

Irrespective of whether someone is dyslexic (often seem as a 'valid' reason for mistakes) or alternatively, disadvantaged or even just not all that bright (often seen as an invalid reason for mistakes) - what's the problem? As long as you can understand what a poster is trying to say. Language is about communication, not about one upmanship. People who get het up about this sort of thing invariably believe themselves to be superior - you're really not

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/06/2020 01:13

@AnyOneThere123 sorry. That went over my head, didn't it...

GreenTulips · 20/06/2020 01:14

Dyslexia is word blindness, dyslexics see letters back to front. I realise there are different degrees of it but it's fairly easy to spot

Totally disagree

Dyslexia is a learning difference.
It takes all forms from short term memory to time keeping, organisation skills and reading and writing and spelling.

Please don’t tell me you’ve educated yourself on this topic and god forbid you’re a teacher.

6079SmithW · 20/06/2020 01:14

Incorrect spelling and grammar doesn't irritate so much as make me wonder if I was raised in a little bubble!
For example, how is it that so many people don't understand there/their/they're, two/too/to or your/you're?! Surely this is taught at primary school? Say it is first taught at age 8, that should give a further 8 years under the old education system and 10 years under the new for it to really bed in. I just don't understand.
The thing that really irritates me is no punctuation. Omg, sometimes I have to read posts/messages two or three times before I make any sense of it!

moomoomummy · 20/06/2020 01:15

I got given

Should of gone
I borrowed it to her

MintyMabel · 20/06/2020 01:16

Spelling and grammar are just so difficult for some people

If only there was some kind of automated correction function on pretty much every device these days.

5-10% of people thought to have dyslexia. The number of posts with crap SPAG is much higher than that. I had a colleague with dyslexia and he rarely made a SPAG error so I assume it affects people differently.

I am annoyed when people say “I wasn’t taught at school” There are many things I do as an adult that I wasn’t taught at school. I still managed to learn them as an adult.

AhBallix · 20/06/2020 01:17

I dislike bad spelling and grammar, but I keep my opinions to myself because I don't have all the information on why a particular person might say or spell things wrongly.

I'm going to explode, though, if I see anyone else using que instead of queue. Is this a thing now?

AnyOneThere123 · 20/06/2020 01:20

I’m starting to wonder if I’m dyslexia

june2007 · 20/06/2020 01:20

Please, Dyslexia is not a learning difference, we all learn differently. It is a disability. I have all the dys I have no issue saying I have spld. And don,t dare suggest it is a gift.

AnyOneThere123 · 20/06/2020 01:21

Dyslexic*. I seem to fit some of the criteria!

Spelling I think needs to be pointed out. I only recently learnt their/there/they’re. I’m struggling with ‘should have/of’ and recently learnt to use that correct use of to, I was using it too many times incorrectly!

LimitIsUp · 20/06/2020 01:24

Maybe you should get a test?

bee222 · 20/06/2020 01:26

“I seen” Confused

My SPAG isn’t exactly perfect, but this drives me up the wall!

Your, you’re , of, off, their, there, and the’re piss Me off immensely

AnyOneThere123 · 20/06/2020 01:37

@Disquieted1 love it!

BluebellsareBlue · 20/06/2020 01:38

I've not read the full thread so forgive me for more than likely repeating thing already said, I've had a shit day.
Chester draws- fuck right off! You can't possibly have lived your like thinking this is correct.

We was- we was? We fecking was? Surely as you say that you know that is so bad. Actually, I've had a shit day, I'm going to slope off and Rage in silence.

SiaPR · 20/06/2020 01:59

The only time it really gets me is when people claim to be teachers/have a PhD/etc and they write “should of...” etc. The rest of the time it is not really important as the reader can still understand.

Toothsil · 20/06/2020 02:41

I completely agree! I saw on Facebook someone had written "if I could of drove my children would of went to that school" 🤦🏼‍♀️ It made me want to poke my own eye out!

mellowww · 20/06/2020 04:55

I am a stickler for grammar and punctuation.

However, MN is about people feeling they can express their concerns and ask for advice from a positive and welcoming audience.

How cruel and petty, then, to criticise their grammar and spelling. Maybe they didn't have the kind of education where a certain standard was drummed into them. Their mistakes are a sign of vulnerability, and I personally think it is exceptionally low to humiliate them further.

Miafey · 20/06/2020 05:56

About 16% of adults in the UK are functionally illiterate, with illiteracy often being a result (and cause of) poverty.

The fact that so many people have poor spelling and grammar irritates me but I'm not usually irritated by someone's poor spelling and grammar.

Cfmcg900 · 20/06/2020 06:19

If I want near-perfect English I seek out a book or newspaper not Facebook Grin

Grammar nazis were edgy in about 2010, I just find it a little cringy now tbh. Being able to spell isn’t a personality trait, yes of course internet forums are going to have lower standards, and that’s without going into the topics of privilege/dual linguists/dyslexia PPs have covered.

Care less about what others do it’ll make for a much more enjoyable time online.
