I don’t use pads or tampons

This is inspired by the post on winged pads. I have always hated tampons and found them uncomfortable and used to use pads when I had a heavy flow as a teen but now in my mid twenties I have quite a light period and now tend to bypass both.

I find pads uncomfortable and also am reluctant from an environmental perspective don’t like to throw hundreds of them away each year. I intended to buy thinx or a similar brand but then just began using a little loo roll (as I’m sure most women have done when caught short!) and found that as I go to the loo once an hour or less anyway so can replace and am very light, it works fine.

Does anyone else do this?

No, if I use loo roll when caught in an emergency it doesn't absorb and just goes straight through and stains knickers. And it's more likely to smell.

Why don't you get panty liners if you're that light?

elizabethdraper · 19/06/2020 13:19

Mooncup

Carabu1 · 19/06/2020 13:19

I don’t either really. Pcos means I barely have periods and when I do it’s more like other people’s spotting. I have a few pads on standby just in case, but I rarely use them.

Prettybluepigeons · 19/06/2020 13:19

No
Using loo roll is hideously uncomfortable and it's not hygienic and it won't do the job properly.

ALbigbump · 19/06/2020 13:20

I couldn’t get away with loo roll I’m too heavy but I’ve been thinking for a while about getting a moon cup, I’m a bit afraid though, but it’s much more sustainable option

AnimalCrossing · 19/06/2020 13:20

You can buy washable pads.

RedPanda2 · 19/06/2020 13:21

Unless it's really good quality stuff doesn't it just break up in your pants??

NannyR · 19/06/2020 13:21

That's great that your flow is light enough for you to deal with it with a bit of loo roll. I don't think it would work for most women though.

ItsLeviOsanotLeviosA · 19/06/2020 13:21

I use a mooncup, environmentally friendly and much more hygienic.

Thesearmsofmine · 19/06/2020 13:22

If it works for you than YANBU. I wish I could get away without using heavy duty pads!

Windyatthebeach · 19/06/2020 13:23

I tried period sponges once on a romantic weekend away.. Had a panic trying to remove it and flooded the bathroom!!
Back to tampons!

GaraMedouar · 19/06/2020 13:23

I have a moon cup. But don’t always use , can be a bit messy. I use it if at home or at the lighter end of my period. I was discussing puberty with my primary school DD (PSHE lesson for the week) and we talked about period pants - might try those when she starts, I’m wondering if that might work well for her if she’s light?

SandysMam · 19/06/2020 13:24

I found the moon cup massive and really hard to insert! It terrified me!!

BarbedBloom · 19/06/2020 13:24

I use a mooncup. I hate pads and have never used them and have found my cramps have stopped and my periods are shorter since switching from tampons

NannyR · 19/06/2020 13:24

I've used washable pads for years and find them far more comfortable than disposable ones.

SarahTancredi · 19/06/2020 13:24

Loo roll is kind of designed to disintegrate when its wet as otherwise it would clog pipes etc when its flushed.

Pads both reusable and disposable and the period pants draw fluids into the centre of the pad/ wick away from surface so you arent kept wet which would not be good for your vulva/vaginal.health.

You must surely be forever trying to wipe off bits of toilet paper that have stuck to you?

What do you do if theres no loo roll in the toilet of out and about ?

Pertella · 19/06/2020 13:25

Mooncup and period pants as a back up

CoralFish · 19/06/2020 13:25

Loving my washable pads during lockdown. I have previously tried three different brands of cups but I did not get on with them. (Honestly, I did try for three whole years.) I like to use tampons when out and about, but the applicator free sort. If anyone knows of any that come in paper packaging rather than plastic that would be ideal!

Waveysnail · 19/06/2020 13:26

Moon cup and proper period pants.

You would be better with period pants than toilet roll

Oldraver · 19/06/2020 13:27

I used to use a mooncupand had a couple of re-usuable pads, but on light days used a flannel folded in three. Worked a treat

MandosHatHair · 19/06/2020 13:28

I used to do this as a teenager because I had limited access to San pro. I'm not sure if it was the loo roll or something else but I would suffer with really persistent thrush. The amount needed for my not that heavy periods was quite uncomfortable. Obviously every woman is different so if this works for you then YADNBU to carry on as you are.

motherheroic · 19/06/2020 13:28

I use a cup. Don't really need it after the second day so thinking of buying some period pants for the last 3 days.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 19/06/2020 13:29

No. I've used a menstrual cup for the last 15 years and they're brilliant. Very economic and environmentally friendly. They can deal with the lightest to the heaviest days.

Isthisfinallyit · 19/06/2020 13:29

No. Due to pcos I don't have periods every month but when I do I flood the first two days. I can fill the biggest tampon plus a nightime pad in an hour. I sleep on towels because I wake up in a blood bath.

Before someone starts about cups: don't bother, I tried already.

krustykittens · 19/06/2020 13:30

Moon cup here as well, although since getting cysts my periods are very painful and heavy so now I don't take a break from my pill. I am no wondering why I didn't do this years ago!
