I don’t use pads or tampons

qwertyuiop098 · 19/06/2020 13:15

This is inspired by the post on winged pads. I have always hated tampons and found them uncomfortable and used to use pads when I had a heavy flow as a teen but now in my mid twenties I have quite a light period and now tend to bypass both.

I find pads uncomfortable and also am reluctant from an environmental perspective don’t like to throw hundreds of them away each year. I intended to buy thinx or a similar brand but then just began using a little loo roll (as I’m sure most women have done when caught short!) and found that as I go to the loo once an hour or less anyway so can replace and am very light, it works fine.

Does anyone else do this?

As for humble brag - not really. Uterine lining that doesn't really grow doesn't really help when you're having IVF, for example. No luck for us on the kids department.

DontStandSoClose · 19/06/2020 14:26

No. What about when a small piece of loo roll drops off and falls on the floor as you are wearing a skirt/dress? I can get away with using loo roll for about hour until I can get home/the shop if caught out, couldn’t do an entire period I’d ruin my clothes and the bedding.

I’ve never liked pads they make me feel unclean, which would be even worse with loo roll stuck to you. My periods have got heavier since children i now need super duper tampons so a bit of loo roll wouldn’t cut it.

rougebuterfly · 19/06/2020 14:27

No. I use washable pads.

Port1aCastis · 19/06/2020 14:27

Hmm I agree with Arriety

ShoeJunkie · 19/06/2020 14:29

I use washable pads. Have the coil so v light periods but still need to use something.

CharityDingle · 19/06/2020 14:33

@ArriettyJones

Why do you want us to tell you about our menstruation arrangements OP?

You could be anyone.

You just do you.

Exactly.
Hannah1202 · 19/06/2020 14:35

You must be really light to get away with toilet roll, I use toilet roll in an emergency to get me to something else. If that’s what works for you then fair enough. Those saying it’s unhygienic are misinformed, if you shower each day you’ll be fine. I use a menstrual cup in the day and a pad in the night. Cups are great but if you don’t like tampons I doubt they’re for you!

INeedNewShoes · 19/06/2020 14:47

@equuscaballus

Could you give me a link to the cotton liners?

This sounds like a good solution.

Scruffyoak · 19/06/2020 14:48

I just use period pants when out and just tissue if anything at home.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/06/2020 14:49

I think you are an exception. Possibly a good idea to get your periods checked out - going from heavy flow to light suggests pcos.

JRUIN · 19/06/2020 14:58

The mooncup is brilliant! I'm just pissed off I discovered it so late in life.

Soubriquet · 19/06/2020 15:01

I use reusable pads and I love them

Won’t go back to disposables now

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 19/06/2020 15:07

@qwertyuiop098 I would be mortified if I had an accident and someone saw me with loo roll / paper ‘down there’ 😱😱😱

The hygienic reasons already been mentioned. 😳

EmeraldShamrock · 19/06/2020 15:13

I've been caught out and used toilet roll I find it causes dryness I use a pad I'm seriously consideringa moon cup for environmental reasons.
I invested in washable period pants for DD they're brilliant she has sensory issues.

qwertyuiop098 · 19/06/2020 15:25

@SarahTancredi because I drink a lot of water and go to the loo very often and I do have a light flow I have never found it disintegrated. To be honest I’ve never been out and about and not found loo roll!

But it would probably better to invest in some period pants for the future!

Buy period pant, cloth sanitary protection or a cup.

qwertyuiop098 · 19/06/2020 15:26

@user1471457751 lol what? I think it’s fairly normal to go to the loo that often if you are active and drink a lot of water. What I strange comment

@KingofDinobots

*Going to the loo once an hour is unusual, have you seen a doctor about it?

Also having periods that light is unusual - are you underweight? Or on contraception that stops normal periods?*

I think it’s fairly normal esp if you drink a lot of water.

I’m at the top of normal weight and haven’t been on any hormonal birth control for 3 years. I have wondered if I’m a little too light and hope I’m fertile, I wonder if I should get that checked out.

@equuscaballus

I have washable cotton liners that popper into place - I tried the tissue thing as a teenager and it worked its way down my leg and fell out my trouser leg!

I can't imagine going back to those terrible tissue days..

Oh god that sounds awful! I would have hated that and I’m glad to say it hasn’t happened to me.

@FightMilkTM

Jesus Christ, a period flow humble brag. Seen it all now. Confused
Humble brag?! Come on, think about this. So I can’t talk about my flow because it’s very light? Why is that bragging? Would you say the same if it possibly meant I could have fertility problems? Why would everything need to be turned into some kind of competition between women...

Because this is a site for people - particularly women - to discuss personal problems? If you don’t like it, don’t read and don’t respond.

I’ve just read about it and was surprised to see how common it is - 1 in 5 women have it. I will definitely get this checked out although I don’t know how easy this will be at the moment. Thank you for the advice!

I just can’t work out why you’d want to know. I understand idle curiosity, believe me but a post that goes on about your use of toilet paper as sanitary protection and ends with “ Does anyone else do this?” just hits a wrong note.

Why do you care about what’s in other people’s knickers? What’s the “personal problem” exactly? Confused

Brendabigbaps · 19/06/2020 15:58

Another for mooncup and period pants.
Use the period pants on my two heaviest days just in case of leaks (not happened yet but makes me feel better)
I then plan a dark wash on the following day so that pants can be washed, then I’m usually so light I just wear pants for the last 2 days.

People often write here about what they personally do and want feedback and to know if anyone else has reached the same conclusion/does the same. Perhaps the phrasing was strange so sorry about that. To be honest several people have commented that my period sounds unusually light and could be a sign of pcos and I’ve now decided to have a check up, so personally I’m glad I got that guidance.
