Would you buy a house next to a grave yard?

Just looking for opinions on if this would put buyers off a house or not. Found a lovely property but it wouldn’t be our ‘forever’ home so would likely need to sell it at some point and am wondering if it would put the majority of buyers off or not. I’m not woo and find old graveyards peaceful. I wouldn’t choose to live next to a current one that would be different to me, but I’m fine with these old graves.

YABU - It would put me off a house
YANBU - it would not put me off a house.

I grew up next to a graveyard. Still find graveyards peaceful and like to visit them. Would definitely buy a house next to one.

BrokenBrit · 18/06/2020 20:09

@RustyBear

Wasn't there a thread where somebody who lived next to a graveyard dug up some bones and skulls in their garden?
Well, that would give me a fright!

I actively wish I was a member of the Munsters or Addams Family, so yes I’d happily live next to a graveyard!

BrokenBrit · 18/06/2020 20:13

No kids likely to be messing around, are only about 4 houses anywhere near it. It’s pretty tiny only around really old 20 headstones.
I’m glad others have said peaceful. My nan always said the dead can’t harm us and I agree with that thought.
The thought of digging up a skeleton as I plant my carrots is a bit of a worrying thought, but, trying to calm that thought, I guess that could happen anywhere in theory as most of the world had seen death and burials at some point.

Well I think it sounds lovely.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/06/2020 20:14

Imagine the Halloween parties!!!

Only thing which would put me off would be epc and if it's listed

iklboo · 18/06/2020 20:25

Yes the neighbours would be quiet.

lidoshuffle · 18/06/2020 20:29

Beautiful; green, quiet and interesting.

I might be more wary in a city - druggies and anti-social behaviour - but lovely in a rural area, so peaceful and secluded.

Insideout99 · 18/06/2020 20:30

I've lived near a graveyard before and a friend of mine does now. It's so peaceful and beautiful. Definitely wouldn't put me off

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2020 20:33

I wouldnt, no. Mainly because of possible anti social behaviour at night. Teenagers and drug dealers etc.

BrokenBrit · 18/06/2020 20:35

I understand that point, but this is a rural hamlet in the middle of nowhere so I’m not too concerned about that in this particular case.

I wouldn't personally buy it, OP. Not especially woo, but I have a very active imagination and wouldn't like to know I was that close to a graveyard at night if I were in my own in the house. I'd end up creeping myself out.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/06/2020 20:43

There is a good chance someone is either buried under or died in most of the older houses anyway. Like this you can at least prepare properly for exorcisms😂

I totally understand that, my sister said the same. But then my sister lives in a city that I would feel less safe in personally 🙈. We are all different and it’s great getting different feedback. It seems like enough people wouldn’t be put off that it would be ok to buy it and have a good chance of selling in when the time comes.

That did make me smile. But in seriousness I won’t be having any exorcisms. In my religion we believe that death is just part of the life cycle. Those souls will have been reborn long ago. The place feels calm and at peace. The house has a lovely happy feel to it too. I am sure people have died in it and in the one I live in now. As long as it hasn’t been used for some horrible crime or have a bad feel to it, I’m fine.

@MissConductUS

No noisy neighbors throwing parties on the weekends, that's a plus.
Maybe there is a party going on but we just can’t see it. Wink
Coffeecak3 · 18/06/2020 20:49

I’d buy it. Sounds great.

BrokenBrit · 18/06/2020 20:52

Also I can just note all your names down and PM you in 10 years when we want to sell GrinWink.

LakieLady · 18/06/2020 20:53

Absolutely would! No fear of anti-social behaviour from those neighbours. Grin

We saw a house we really liked that was next to a graveyard a few years ago. Unfortunately, we weren't in a position to go after it as my divorce took ages longer than expected to go through.

sallywinter · 18/06/2020 20:56

We live opposite a church and graveyard and despite being quite a wuss it didn't even occur to me when we bought the house, maybe it just doesn't have a 'feeling'? It's reassuring to know that it can't be built on and it's also rural so no antisocial behaviour etc.

There are probably about four weddings a year and inconsiderate parking can be an issue but it's so infrequent I can't get worked up about it. Funerals tend to happen on week days when we're at work anyway.

The only time i get the shivers is when I walk to my car in the morning and it's dark but I think I'd get that if it was dark anywhere, rather than the graveyard.

Meredithgrey1 · 18/06/2020 20:57

I used to live opposite a graveyard. Was lovely, the graveyard had lots of lovely old trees, and it was nice not having houses across the road. Didn't bother me at all.

Rainbowchampagne · 18/06/2020 20:59

Nope, zombies 😱

formerbabe · 18/06/2020 21:00

Wouldn't bother me at all

Gruesome2some · 18/06/2020 21:00

I grew up next to a grave yard, never bothered me! I got married in the church, my daughter was Christened there and my mum is buried there. I think it's comforting.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/06/2020 21:01

@Rainbowchampagne depends which kind🤔
Walking dead? Fine.
World war Z? Not so fine.
