To think the whole point of pick 'n' mix is that you PICK it?

It's not often that I click an advert I see on Facebook, but one flashed up today for pick 'n' mix. Given the travesty that followed, I won't bother naming the company.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I had pick 'n' mix and I'm quite partial to cola bottles. So I followed the link, already mentally planning what I'm going to choose. I clicked the Start Order button. And was utterly confused to be presented with just 5 options - things like "Fizzies mix" and "Jellies mix". It seems this company only sells PRE-MIXED pick 'n' mix! AIBU to think this defeats the entire point? You might as well just buy a bag of Haribo!

I miss Woolworths...

I still call them penny sweets and looked on in horror as the price swelled and the quality nosedived. I have also become painfully aware of the hygiene risks.
Still I could murder a pink mouse.

bookmum08 · 18/06/2020 22:40

The Wilkos I go to (various different branches) always have non jelly sweets as well as jelly ones.
Jazzies, fudge (various types), those banana thingys, choc covered raisins, smarties, chocs with caramel or other liquidy stuff in, those 'pencil' things.

Womencanlift · 18/06/2020 22:42

One of the reasons I want Cineworld to reopen is because I miss their pic n mix. They do a really nice toffee crisp thing.

Cinemas are usually expensive but as long as you don’t go too crazy it’s ok once the 25% discount is applied for being a Cineworld Unlimited card holder

barcodescanner · 18/06/2020 22:44

Most of the Mr Simms shops have been doing deliveries during lockdown, also posting out if not local. Obv the shops are open now, and you can choose what you want

PowerslidePanda · 18/06/2020 22:50

Pleased to report that some sweets of my own choosing have now been ordered. I've got both regular and fizzy cola bottles coming, jazzies, pink mice, chocolate footballs, gobstoppers and chocolate flavoured stones (which I haven't come across before but look interesting!)

Ikea have nice pick and mix but they probably aren't doing it at the moment.

I don't like touching those scoop things and the drawers at the best of times.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/06/2020 23:00

@PowerslidePanda

Please report back on the cola bottles, I need to know if they are proper chewy ones like Haribo of those squishy fall apart ones you get everywhere else.

I will cheerfully pay for a bag of starmix for you to do a comparison!

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 18/06/2020 23:04

i never really had a pick and mix, Not good value for money, i do remember buying penny sweets, probably 10p worth, when a child, some of them cost 1/2 p

Thisismytimetoshine · 18/06/2020 23:05

Well, the ones in the cinema certainly aren't value for money.

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/06/2020 23:06

@PowerslidePanda where did you order from in the end?

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/06/2020 23:07

Mojo's used to be 1/2p when I was a kid...............

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 18/06/2020 23:09

i dont remember Mojos, had to google, nope still no memory

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 18/06/2020 23:10

I keep eyeing up the many many online sweet shops. Some of which seem to do 'pre picked' pick n mix, others sell bags of whatever (eg 500g cola bottles).
Problem is I have no idea how many sweets you get for that price so dont want to be disappointed when 10 sweets arrive. And I hate the postage prices
I know we cant expect things to be delivered for free but sometimes it doubles the overall order price.

I miss the penny sweet pic n mix in corner shops of old

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/06/2020 23:12

This reminds of that thread where the OP was fuming about her DH spending £99 on pick and mix!

fodderbeet · 18/06/2020 23:18

Well you bunch of bloody buggers. Just had to update tomorrows shopping order with a fuckton of haribo and toffees because of this. And jelly beans.

Picklypickles · 18/06/2020 23:20

I used to really like the white chocolate fish & chips, the chips were crinkle cut and the fish had scales and little faces!

Samtsirch · 18/06/2020 23:22

@ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew
Oh yes Woolworths pick and mix.....( stares dreamily off into the distance)
Nothing else has ever topped it.
It was always on my children’s birthday present list and Father Christmas letter.
The amount of times I bought it in preparation, then caved in, ate it all and had to replace it...😂
Happy memories 😊

LauraMipsum · 18/06/2020 23:23

Mojos, fruit salads and blackjacks were all 2 for 1p when I was at school.

I realised I'd turned into my own mother recently when my daughter picked up a Freddo in the supermarket and I was horrified that it wasn't 10p!

Samtsirch · 18/06/2020 23:23

@fodderbeet
🤣 there goes the diet....

justasking111 · 18/06/2020 23:26

Tesco picknmix is awful now all sweets wrapped with things like mini mars, opal fruits etc. Luckily our olde worlde sweet shop has reopened so I bought a quarter of dolly mixtures and a quarter of milk drops the other day. Woollies picknmix raspberry ruffles, food of the gods.

bookmum08 · 18/06/2020 23:32

Why does no one seem to believe me that Woolies and Wilkos pick n mix is the same stuff? It is the same supplier.
Yes there are some products you probably remember from your youth that you can't get now - there will be a reason for that. Often hygiene issues. Unwrapped sweets out in the open is always dodgy but things like the peanut crackle or whatever it was called had to be all chucked away many a time because it had quite frankly gone into a revolting condition.
I have 3 words for you that were often sent down from head office with a request to destroy some products...
"Report of Infestation"
Mmmm.
(I love pick n mix by the way. Just very glad some items are no longer sold)

ToddlerBumpBorderCollie · 18/06/2020 23:34

@LittleMissNaice and just like that, in one careless post you have undone all my 23 weeks of minimal weight gained in pregnancy Grin

WoollyMollyMonkey · 18/06/2020 23:46

I was in Wilco just a couple of days ago and the pick and mix tubs were all EMPTY! (Just in case anyone was thinking of going).

listsandbudgets · 18/06/2020 23:46

I want aniseed balls, pear drops, lemon sherbet, rhubarb and custard and those blue fizzy balls in my pick and mix.

Thisismytimetoshine · 18/06/2020 23:48
