To think the whole point of pick 'n' mix is that you PICK it?

It's not often that I click an advert I see on Facebook, but one flashed up today for pick 'n' mix. Given the travesty that followed, I won't bother naming the company.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I had pick 'n' mix and I'm quite partial to cola bottles. So I followed the link, already mentally planning what I'm going to choose. I clicked the Start Order button. And was utterly confused to be presented with just 5 options - things like "Fizzies mix" and "Jellies mix". It seems this company only sells PRE-MIXED pick 'n' mix! AIBU to think this defeats the entire point? You might as well just buy a bag of Haribo!

I miss Woolworths...

There’s an old fashioned sweetie shop near me. They do online orders I think.

@Womencanlift

One of the reasons I want Cineworld to reopen is because I miss their pic n mix. They do a really nice toffee crisp thing.

Cinemas are usually expensive but as long as you don’t go too crazy it’s ok once the 25% discount is applied for being a Cineworld Unlimited card holder

A mate of mine used to work for Cineworld Head Office. He said that they dared one another to pick the most ridiculous prices for snacks and the winner each month (the one whose price didn't result in a drop in quantity sold) would get a prize. In the end, they dropped the prizes as they found that no matter how high they put the prices, people would still buy them in the same quantities as before and believe they were getting a deal with a discount card.

Sorry. They're playing you.

What complete arseholes Hmm
People still buy them because they don't want to disappoint their kids, not because they can't see they're being ripped off.

NellePorter · 19/06/2020 00:12

I did the exact same thing a few hours ago OP! I was beyond disappointed when I realised you don't actually pick your own mix!

NoProblem123 · 19/06/2020 00:34

If it’s the company I buy from, they usually do 10 scoops that you get to choose yourself from about 25-30 different things.
However since C19 their having supply issues so are selling premixed ‘Jellies’, ‘fizzies’, etc.
You can though do all the SM stuff and follow their FB & IG and get a golden ticket to pick yourself - I had a golden ticket last week so got what I wanted, including 2 scoops of fizzy vampire fangs, nom nom Grin

They'd do better to teach their kids that sweets and popcorn at the cinema is the biggest rip off going and that you should go elsewhere first.

OP, Morrisons do small bags of pick and mix type sweets on 3 for a pound, with lots of choice, so you could get a few of those rather than pay loads to have them posted to you.

PowerslidePanda · 19/06/2020 08:57

i never really had a pick and mix, Not good value for money

If it's pay-by-weight (and get a nasty surprise at the checkout), I agree - but the "all you can fit in a cup for X amount" was a game changer!

Ahh! Choosing a number of scoops from a range is what I was expecting, yes. Don't know if it is the same company, but am willing to forgive the pre-mixed thing if it is down to coronavirus issues - I'll try and remember to have another look once things are back to normal.

@LEELULUMPKIN - Ooh, I'd forgotten the thread where the husband spent £99! I went with a company called Posted Sweets - mainly for its variety. A lot of the websites I looked at didn't do chocolate footballs, which were a pick 'n' mix staple of my youth!

@PyongyangKipperbang - Hehe, will do! Some of the sites I looked at said that their cola bottles were Haribo ones, so there are definitely places that will sell you them in bulk!

@TheFormerPorpentinaScamander - When my order arrives, I'm happy to post pics of what 100g worth looks like (for the gobstoppers, I'm only expecting a couple!) Agree about postage costs though Sad

@listsandbudgets - That sounds like an excellent homeschooling opportunity! Making a mental note of the idea for when my DDs are older... Grin

You can still buy Haribo cola bottles in big boxes/tubs/packets www.hancocks.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=Haribo+cola

GabsAlot · 19/06/2020 09:38

Givingup123456 · 19/06/2020 09:50

İ miss toffee crumble :(

GabsAlot · 19/06/2020 09:54

but thanks for all the recommedations

AlphaDalpha · 19/06/2020 09:56

There's an amazing pick and mix shop in Westward Ho! if you're near Devon. They sell EVERYTHING 🥰

vanillandhoney · 19/06/2020 10:33

This thread is responsible for me spending £13 on Pick n Mix last night Grin

Casschops · 19/06/2020 11:25

I certainly wouldn't want any publically accessible pick and mix like wilko at the urrrrgh.

EmbarrassedUser · 19/06/2020 13:11

It’s either b&m or the range that do the same pick and mix as Wilko’s near me 😋 Need my chauffeur to take me down there when it opens.

PowerslidePanda · 28/06/2020 11:15

I said I'd come back to clarify what 100g worth amounts to (sorry that the picture is sideways)

  • Normal cola bottles - about 22
  • Fizzy cola bottles - about 30
  • Chocolate mice - about 14, but they're way bigger than the ones from my childhood! (Now I'm wondering what the "standard" size is - are these ones extra big, or are the ones I remember extra small?)
  • Chocolate footballs - about 18
  • Jazzies - too many to try and count!
  • Gobstoppers - 14 - a lot more than I expected! That'll keep me going for a while!
  • Chocolate pebbles - about 18. These are a new one for me, but are a bit of a disappointment. They're a bit like mini eggs, but kind of ruined by the irregular shape - strangely jarring

I'm now wondering how to eat them. Out of the plastic bags is just wrong - plus they should really all be mixed in together. But out of a bowl just isn't pick 'n' mix-ish. I need to find a paper bag!

To think the whole point of pick 'n' mix is that you PICK it?

NoProblem123 · 28/06/2020 11:41

You need a big bag to mix them up in - mine come in 1 bag - I’ve picked - they mix Grin

PowerslidePanda · 28/06/2020 13:14

Ooh, that's good service! Although DH ended up adding a couple of things to my order for himself (like aniseed balls - yuck!), so probably a good thing they didn't mix it all!

I noticed our Wilko had their pick-n-mix open last weekend, and wondered just how many potential Covid-ridden hands had held the scoops, let alone touched the sweets ....

TurquoiseDragon · 02/11/2020 16:35

Oh dear, I feel an order coming on...

orangenasturtium · 02/11/2020 17:14

You can buy a 1kg box of 600 "penny sweets" for £6, or even less from a wholesalers (lots are delivering and selling to the public since lockdown). Buy your favourites and you can have your own pick and mix at home Grin. They even come with tongs in the tub!

We used to buy them for the DC's parties. They would last a whole year of parties, playdates and special occasions. They have a long shelf life and it is a lot cheaper than pick and mix prices. I'm guessing your 100g cost a lot more than 60p...

I have used www.aquarterof.co.uk for years, you can choose 250g of each sweet you want. So not much mix of the pic! Lovely though, especially if you have your favs.

Recently went for pickyomix.com as seen on facebook and I let them choose my mix. You can choose yourself as well if you want to. It was actually quite fun to get such a random selection of sweets that I wouldn't have chosen myself. Came in a huge bag that looked nice too.

Need to take it easy though, what with Dentists being a VIP experience these days!

tealandteal · 02/11/2020 18:36

I love aquaterof for old fashioned sweets like proper milk bottles, always buy some from there at Christmas for stocking fillers.
