Are you still wiping groceries?

Just that! We have been wiping food shopping items as some of the family are vulnerable (not shielding) but wondering if it's time to stop?

OP posts:
Kahlua4me · 18/06/2020 06:58

I wipe some things if we are going to need them straight away, otherwise I leave them in the garage for a few days before unpacking. We have a fridge out there so can use that.

Dh is shielding though so I do it to protect him.

Fivefourthree · 18/06/2020 06:59

@WwMILd I agree with you about bins. I spray dettox on my outside bins before and after they've been emptied. Have always kept inside bins clean.

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2020 06:59

Yes I am. Doing a weekly food shop. Takes maybe an extra 15 mins. Don’t feel any mental health concern doing it ! Why not decrease the risk - it’s small but not vanishingly small - I don’t understand if you have time why you wouldn’t tbh.

AnimalCrossing · 18/06/2020 07:02

Never started’ lol I just wash my hands

sanityisamyth · 18/06/2020 07:03

Never have done. It's ridiculous.

vanillandhoney · 18/06/2020 07:03

No. Don't wear gloves or a mask to the shops either. Or when putting petrol in the car. I don't even use sanitiser unless I'm working.

I do think a lot of people have become so anxious about this that it's going to cause some serious long-term damage to their mental health. What are we teaching our children? To be so scared that they can't open letters or grab a bar of chocolate from the food shop in case they get Coronavirus?

It's so unhealthy. Children pick up on their parents anxieties and I really don't think it's good for them to live in a house where the post is quarantined and people are running baths for the food shop.

Dita73 · 18/06/2020 07:04

@Egghead68 Are you being serious?! That sounds very excessive

firstimemamma · 18/06/2020 07:05

Never done this and never would.

Mistigri · 18/06/2020 07:10

I've never done it. There's no evidence for viable quantities of virus being transmitted this way and I've not seen any health experts advising that this is necessary (though I've seen some advising that it isn't needed).

Bluntness100 · 18/06/2020 07:11

No, never done it and it was never the government advice to do so.

Although the virus can live on surfaces under lab conditions, in real life it’s very delicate and any touch kills it. Where as it’s theoretically possible to catch it from groceries if someone infected coughed or sneezed on it immediately before you touched it and you then touched your face, the reality is it’s practically impossible to catch it this way, and even if you did, the viral load would be so low as you’d never know.

The evidence of that is that delivery drivers, warehouse staff etc are no more likely to catch it than any one else.

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2020 07:12

@PurpleHoodie, what the hell are you on about? People die, even with a functioning health system from a lot more than the two categories you decided to mention. But it isn't just about death, this virus can leave people with a lot of health issues. For others the ongoing symptoms of post viral infection, are anything from distressing to annoying and this is months later. The NHS doesn't protect from that.

OP, I don't think now is the time to stop. I'd wait around three weeks and see if the infection rate goes up. For me it isn't inconvenient to be careful wirh shopping, it does cut the infection risk, so I'm going to still do it. I'm vulnerable, though. I can see why people aren't as concerned and wouldn't criticise them.

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/06/2020 07:13

Yes, still washing/wiping. I would rather do that once than have to wash my hands constantly while I'm at home - my hands were a bleeding mess at the start of all this.

I don't quarantine post anymore, I just deal with it straight away and then wash my hands.

I don't feel it's excessive - when you think of all the hands that touch your shopping before it gets to you, and a warehouse is an ideal virus spreading environment.

TorkTorkBam · 18/06/2020 07:13

No we don't.

I am fairly certain I had it mildly in Jan/Feb. Can't be sure yet though. Five of us in my house, none at high risk of getting severe symptoms, all good at habits to avoid spread from us to others and so we don't worry about it too much.

If we have not already had it I'm OK with catching it. I'd probably welcome it on grounds of we will get anyway some time this year so let's get it over with.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/06/2020 07:14

Never done it but none of us are vulnerable so it didn't cross my mind to.

WwMILd · 18/06/2020 07:15
@Egghead68 Are you being serious?! That sounds very excessive
Dita73 might be excessive to you, but not excessive to Egghead68

Does it affect you? No!

megletthesecond · 18/06/2020 07:15

Yes. Fresh and frozen food and bananas, oranges etc all get a soapy wash. No health problems in this house.

The cupboard food and non food items are quarantined for a few days in a pile under my desk.

MayFayre · 18/06/2020 07:15

Never did

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2020 07:15

Bluntness100, cheif medical officers when asked were saying for the vulnerable, it was advisable.

This is what makes a mockery of the primary schools not going back. Plus the playparks not opening up again, If we are now saying surfaces aren't a risk.

Egghead68 · 18/06/2020 07:15

@Dita73 absolutely. I’m clinically extremely vulnerable and can’t be arsed to wipe them. Not ‘very excessive’ at all but thanks for your judgement.

SpillTheTeaa · 18/06/2020 07:17

Yes been doing it from the start it's just normal to me now.

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2020 07:19

TorkTorkBam, unfortunately we now know that not everyone will become immune and we are seeing immunity die out within two months.

We've had it, my DD is donating plasma. The Nurse was telling her that a lot of the plasma is starting to contain less antibodies than it once did. They are seeing immunity die out in those that were infected in March/April.

Dita73 · 18/06/2020 07:21

@Egghead68 Just asked a question. If it makes you feel better then good luck to you

@WwMILd I didn’t ask you. Mind your own

AdriannaP · 18/06/2020 07:22

Yes still doing it.
If there is even a tiny risk, why risk it for the sake of 5-10mins and a few wipes.

SteelyPanther · 18/06/2020 07:25

I never did wipe my shopping.
But I am still spraying letters and parcels with the Dettol spray.
And why do businesses and charities think it’s OK to post their stuff through my letter box ? It’s not !

sugarlost · 18/06/2020 07:25

I made a poor attempt once but I understand why people are doing it.

I read in the news there have been outbreaks in some factory's providing food such as chicken... what are people's thoughts regarding this? Does anyone eat pre cooked chicken and if yes would they stop buying?
