Are you still wiping groceries?

Just that! We have been wiping food shopping items as some of the family are vulnerable (not shielding) but wondering if it's time to stop?

I do. Fridge stuff gets wiped, then everything else gets wiped over and put in a separate large bag to quarantine for 4 days, then I put it away. Post gets put in a safe place and left for 2 days, then I open it and wash hands. After all the shopping is away, I wipe down all kitchen cupboards, doors, handles, etc. I will continue to do this until there is a vaccine or forever if not.

Scarby9 · 18/06/2020 08:03

Yes, I am. I can't imagine stopping now. Some version of sunk cost fallacy makes me reluctant to stop because if I then caught it, what a waste if those months doing it and avoiding everyone else.

IncrediblySadToo · 18/06/2020 08:06

@Bertucci

No. Never have. Seems a bit daft.
Why the judgement.

'No.Never have'. Was sufficient

Is there really any need to belittle those that DO think it's necessary?

Reedwarbler · 18/06/2020 08:07

@copperoliver Its not a good idea to spray light switches, you'll get an electric shock.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/06/2020 08:09

No it's a slippery slope to OCD imo.

Aridane · 18/06/2020 08:10

Never did - just washed my hands after putting away

IncrediblySadToo · 18/06/2020 08:11

@JinglingHellsBells

Yes.

@areallthenamesusedup The virus can live on plastic for at least 3 days, and some say 5 days or more.

Almost all food is plastic-wrapped.

We wipe with mild bleach and cardboard or paper packaging is quarantined for 3 days.

Why ever not? You've no idea who has touched it . Other shoppers, pickers and packers, people from other countries for imported food.

I used bleach in the beginning, but I use soapy water now - I think it's just as effective and find it less hassle then bleach.
Redwinestillfine · 18/06/2020 08:15

Yes. Last I heard virus was still around.

MindyStClaire · 18/06/2020 08:17

Never have. I'm vulnerable but not terribly so (asthmatic and pregnant), DH and DD are healthy.

There was never any official advice to do so, and indeed the Irish food safety authority said there's no need.

We've been more stringent about washing our hands whenever we get home, otherwise we've just carried on as normal hygiene wise.

Bloodybridget · 18/06/2020 08:17

I've never done it. Haven't even always washed my hands after unpacking a delivery, I'm so slack, but neither of us is exceptionally vulnerable.

Noname1234567890 · 18/06/2020 08:17

I have never done this, I was watching a lady in the queue in the supermarket, she was wearing gloves and a mask to protect herself but then obviously had to use her gloved hands to open her bag and rummage around inside to find her purse etc, if she has handled infected foods in the supermarket she has now possibly spread that virus to everything in her handbag and the outside of her handbag which she will then bring into the house, i could not cope with trying to keep my house virus free so just stick with sensible hand washing.

HesterShaw1 · 18/06/2020 08:20

Just wondering how many single use wipes and gloves some people are going through with all this shopping wiping.

Obviously doesn't apply to the soap water users and those re using cloths.

JollyAndBright · 18/06/2020 08:21

Yes I’m still giving our weekly grocery delivery a wipe down with hot soapy water.

Like PP’s I think it’s worth the effort to eliminate the small risk.

SomewhereEast · 18/06/2020 08:22

Never have. My understanding is that if you wash your hands thoroughly & frequently and don't stick your finger up your nose (which you shouldn' be doing anyway obvs Grin), you really will be fine

SockYarn · 18/06/2020 08:25

Never have, what a faff. Handwashing and regular levels of cleaning. Have never bought Zoflora in my life and we only have a bottle of dettol because it's just the thing for stripping paint off Warhammer models, according to DS.

The risk from packaging and food is negligible.

KaTetof19 · 18/06/2020 08:26

I'm still wiping things down and to be honest I don't see this being a habit I change anytime soon.

Couldn't care less what the "I'm so cool, I'm an anti-dementor" brigade think about it one way or another.

SueEllenMishke · 18/06/2020 08:27

It was never necessary to wipe shopping....or quarantine post and parcels.
Just wash your hands!

frumpety · 18/06/2020 08:28

No, I have never washed any shopping or deliveries, the risk is so tiny for the level of effort involved. I know a few people who did and still do and if it makes them feel safer or happier, then good for them. Smile

lockeddownandcrazy · 18/06/2020 08:28

Never have been.
I do know someone who steams all her grocery packets and wont buy anything loose though

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2020 08:30

@MindyStClaire, there was official advice, for people who were clinically vulnerable. For others, the information was that shopping is a very low risk, but if you want to eliminate that risk, then guidance was given out, from the schools of tropical medicines and chief medical officers. It was covered on the Q&As.

But if shopping is 100% safe, as I asked, why haven't parks etc opened? It doesn't make sense.

Legoandloldolls · 18/06/2020 08:30

Nope as six people to feed. I dont condemn anyone who does though. I am of the mind that I dont want catch it, but it's pretty inevitable without a vaccine. We have three kids back in school so overall there are bigger risks in our life.

I do wipe the shopping trolly handle. Going out sometimes makes my skin crawl now but life has to go on for me. I was getting to scared to do anything in April / March which wasnt good

IamPickleRick · 18/06/2020 08:33

I still am.

We have a system and it’s no faff. After I get home from click and collect, all fridge items go in the sink, wash like I’m washing up, DH notes all the meat use by dates on the magnetic pad for the fridge door as he dries and puts them away.

Cupboard stuff gets laid out on the garden table, sits in the sun for 30 mins or so, the kids then put it away.

Even if it is of little protection value (isn’t the jury still out on this anyway), the mental health benefits to me outweigh it. I know it’s clean Wink

Roselilly36 · 18/06/2020 08:34

We are still wiping everything, I am shielded until 30th though.

IamPickleRick · 18/06/2020 08:35

If your hands are clean btw, you dirty them again every time you touch the unwashed milk bottle handle...

Lindy2 · 18/06/2020 08:39

Yes I am.

I think it's worth the little bit of extra time to feel a bit safer. My children can then help themselves to things like cereal without me worrying about what might be being touched on the packaging.
