Are you still wiping groceries?

Just that! We have been wiping food shopping items as some of the family are vulnerable (not shielding) but wondering if it's time to stop?

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 13:09

Never have done, never will

Beatingthisthing · 18/06/2020 13:12

Nope, never did and never will. Really not necessary.

MrsR87 · 18/06/2020 13:19

I never did. I just do what I’ve always done which is to wash my hands before and after putting the groceries away. I then always wash fruit and vegetables before use, I always have. If I’m using food out of a tin or packet, I would always wash my hands if my then going to touch any of the food with hands. So I haven’t felt the need to wipe down all my groceries!

TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/06/2020 13:30

I never was. My friend still is but she has ocd and a handwashing issue even pre-covid. She’s not in a good place.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/06/2020 13:53

eg believe in the "3 second rule"

Only 3 seconds @cologne4711? I've always gone by 5 seconds!

Missing the point here but I'm jealous of all these people with room to quarantine their shopping! Mine goes straight away as I've got no room for it anywhere else!

Lovely1a2b3c · 18/06/2020 14:00

@Purplehoodie- real question, don't understand your opposition to it.

OP posts:
IamPickleRick · 18/06/2020 14:05

Well it’s once every two weeks so it’s not like I am spending my evenings dreaming about the next time Grin I don’t see why washing stops me being a fun person. If someone wants to take pride in filth, it’s nothing to do with me. And if someone else wants to clean things, why does it matter to you?

Dragonglass · 18/06/2020 14:08

It's the 10 second rule here.

I never started washing the shopping or my bins.
Post doesn't get quarantined either. Just wash your hands after opening it Confused

StrangeAddiction · 18/06/2020 14:11

I'm still doing it. It's a pain in the arse but better than possibly catching Covid.

frumpety · 18/06/2020 14:12

Its one of those scenarios where we have to accept that what other people do is different to what we do, neither is right or wrong, its just what we each prefer to do. You washing your stuff doesn't effect me and me not washing mine doesn't effect you.

I wear my ' Takes pride in filth ' badge with, er .......... pride Grin

draughtycatflap · 18/06/2020 14:38

@deydododatdodontdeydo

All our groceries get burned on a bonfire as soon as it gets home, just to be extra sure.

I do similar, but I nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Tut. Such half-measures... After Click & Collect I use my Death Star to obliterate the whole planet.
randomer · 18/06/2020 14:40

I love a bit of filth.

draughtycatflap · 18/06/2020 14:40

Luckily for you lot I can’t get a slot until next Tuesday.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 18/06/2020 14:48

Yeah
Cos I'm not someone who fancies eating bleach flavoured apples I'm living in filth
Hmm
Mumsnet ridiculous absolutes at their finest
God some people can be twats
There is a ....perish threat thought.... middle ground

UmbrellaHat · 18/06/2020 14:50

Never did -utterly ridiculous paranoia.

UmbrellaHat · 18/06/2020 14:53

We have a system and it’s no faff. After I get home from click and collect, all fridge items go in the sink, wash like I’m washing up, DH notes all the meat use by dates on the magnetic pad for the fridge door as he dries and puts them away.

That is the complete definition of faff!
If I suggested that to DH even as a joke he would die laughing.

JinglingHellsBells · 18/06/2020 14:54

Those of you who don't wash plastic are you aware of the risks?

If someone like a delivery driver or a packer has sneezed, coughed or touched your shopping AND they have the virus (often without symptoms) the virus can be on the packaging.

It only takes a few droplets to infect it.

It can last on plastic for 3 days or more. So you are putting the virus in your fridge.

If you put food in your fridge in contaminated packaging, the virus prefers cold temps, and would live longer, so they think (and the same if it's in a freezer.)

In China, they were advised to quarantine all items coming into their homes. They even put outdoor shoes in a special place and used only that pair when going out.
All packaging was washed or quarantined. (I know this as we have Chinese friends.)

I don't understand why people don't understand this.

JinglingHellsBells · 18/06/2020 14:56

I do wonder if the reason we have had such a severe outbreak is because people are not following these simply hygiene measures or being too casual about lockdown.

I KNOW of people who were shielding who caught COVID through the virus coming into their house.

Maybe you have had it through your shopping but were so mildly affected you didn't know, but that doesn't apply to everyone.

Sunnydays123456 · 18/06/2020 14:58

Would take my chances than waste life wiping groceries tbh

vanillandhoney · 18/06/2020 15:00

Are other countries advising everyone to wash their shopping, then?
B9008 · 18/06/2020 15:01

Erm.....nope and never have

Maybe some of the 50K people who died thought like you.

Grocery packaging is filthy anyway regardless of Covid.

gluteustothemaximus · 18/06/2020 15:02

Yes, I wipe down, and will keep doing it. It's just trying to eliminate risk. I wouldn't think badly of anyone who doesn't, and I have no opinions on people who do more than me.

Billomatey · 18/06/2020 15:02

Yes we still do this.

JinglingHellsBells · 18/06/2020 15:03

@vanillandhoney read my post.
Yes, in China they were. Very much so.

No other country has had such fatalities as the UK so I'd rather spend 30 mins wiping packets than the rest of my days 6 ft under, thanks.
