Boris Johnson's painted plane

Am I completely out of touch? I can't tell anymore.

Is spending £900k on painting a plane ridiculous at any time and even more so right now?

OP posts:

Sticking with the plane... Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, the company doing the work, is NOT a painting company!!!

No they are a multi discipline company, of which a branch includes the design and painting of aircraft liveries. They haven't just been randomly chosen to do the work, it is what they do.

chomalungma · 18/06/2020 09:28

So? It's still not his plane. Let's not have the facts get in the way of a good moan though

It's not his plane - but I wondered who suggested the colour scheme...

ohoneohtwo · 18/06/2020 09:30

Ok. I'll correct it. Boris Johnson wants to spend £900k painting a plane when we have are about to hit possibly the worst recession we've faced in decades (paraphrasing his chancellor). Any better?

Well yes, sticking with facts is always better. Lots of posters jumping on to talk about Boris and his plane as if it's the only use the aircraft has. It is important people know the true facts surrounding the deployment of RAF aircraft if they want to discuss. I'm not for a minute defending the decision to do this btw, but I do hate to see people ranting over things incorrectly.

Boris did. 2 years ago.

As an RAF aircraft, it's going to be a bit conspicuous when it's used in refuelling - especially in a war zone.

You have gone some way to proving my point here re knowing the uses of the aircraft.

longwayoff · 18/06/2020 09:37

O fuck it. Let's not quibble over chickenfeed and get him a yacht as well. A nice little weekender like Philip Green's.

Which is what I said way upthread - because I know the use of the aircraft.

Which is an RAF aircraft. But not being painted by the RAF but instead the £900,000 contract to repaint it in the colours suggested by Boris has gone to a private company - and it's not a very practical colour for an RAF plane.

SquishySquirmy · 18/06/2020 09:42

So tacky as well.

Like if Johnny English or Austin Powers was in charge of decor.

That's normal. The RAF dont paint planes.

I don't disagree.

PhilCornwall1 · 18/06/2020 09:57

He's more Johnny English.

Mind you, I could imagine Johnson standing up at PMQs and shouting "I put the Grrr in swinger baby!!!"

Imissmoominmama · 18/06/2020 09:57

I think it’s a great idea- other heads of state will see him coming from afar. It’s almost a diplomatic service, to make his visits less tedious. Imagine having to sit listening to him witter and mumble nonsense and try to take him seriously? Well now they can release tension on his approach by having a right old guffaw.

Thedogscollar · 18/06/2020 10:37

Let's just hope the 92% YANBU versus the 8%YABU is a reflection of the result at next GE and Boris is gone for good.

user1471565182 · 18/06/2020 11:23

Has he really not learnt about these stupid fucking vanity projects? what actually needs to happen for him to stop (except him paying for his own shit obviously)

Hingeandbracket · 18/06/2020 11:34

@Elai1978

Whilst I agree it’s a lot of money, it’s less than the US government spends on a single 5hr flight of Air Force One, just to bring a little perspective.
So what?
twoshedsjackson · 18/06/2020 11:41

I wonder if this will go the way of the Garden Bridge in London?
They wasted an awful lot of money deciding that was a bad idea.

CeciledeVolanges · 18/06/2020 11:57

He could afford it. He earns £800,000 per annum outside his parliamentary salary.

Unlikely. The aircraft has been at Marshall's in Cambridge for 9 days already.

It's an Airbus a330 owned by the Raf and kitted out as business class for 50ish people.

Much like a normal a330 you will have flown on but with less seats and more work tables.

Also aerial engagements take place over the horizon these days so you never see the plane your shooting at

gotothecooler · 25/06/2020 15:08

Not my image but the Voyager has been rolled out.

Speaks volumes about Boris and the divide in the countries of the UK. It's like a huge advert for bloody England.

So Mrs Merkel has just spent 1.2 billion on 3 a350s with the German flag painted down the side for government transports.....
