AIBU?

Breastfeeding in public

Forgivenandsetfree · 16/06/2020 20:35

Inspired by a comment I have seen on Facebook.
I breastfed until 22 months, towards the end I didn't feed in public because of course she was eating by then but when she was small I did. Luckily I never had an issue and was treated well in my local Macdonalds and Costa, but the comment said most people have issues with Bf in public, aibu to think this isn't true?
YABU- I faced issues/I don't like it.
YNBU- I don't/ didn't have a problem.

The two tops method works well.

A strappy vest top, then a loose top over that. Lift the outer top up, tuck baby in, pull the vest top down over the boob, very easy and you can’t see a thing.

Having said that, with DS2 I got some bfing tops from JoJo and they really were a godsend. Easy to manoeuvre and a bit more dressy.

Only issue I’ve ever had was being asked not to bf in the swimming pool once but that’s a divisive issue on mn!

@Fiddlesticks345

Two top method.

Vest top with looser top over. Loose top goes up, vest top goes down, once you've got the latch the loose top can also work as a sort of drape.

Have a practice at home, it works really well.
I also had some proper feeding tops/dresses jumpers for winter, but the two top method works fine.

I'd have rather got my whole boob out than shown my stomach, bleugh.

I actually think those stupid nursing aprons draw much more attention to what you are doing

They really do. I was once at Heathrow near a couple of older women who were watching a woman with one of those apron faffing about for ages. That woman's husband could see them looking and was glaring at them assuming they had an issue with public breastfeeding but as I was closer to them I could hear their conversation and it wasn't any issue about the feeding but just incredulousness that she was going through that rigmarole rather than just getting on with it.

Cheap Primark vest tops under a normal top. Top up, vest down, job done.

Yes agree with @LaurieMarlow two tops worked very well. If it’s just too hot for that I used to wear a stretchy strappy top and pull it down.

Only negatively from mil as dd3 got older. Telling her she doesn't need that! God knows how she would have reacted if she knew how long we continued to feed. Also probably one embarrassing chat with a young child in soft play but she was just curious. I was lucky.

Ah the two top method makes so much sense, thanks so much! Yeah when I practised with the apron thing it got both of us way too hot and was such a palaver. Trying to extricate baby to wind her or change her over to the other side and getting her all tangled up in it was ridiculous, would look a right pillock doing that in public!

When one of my babies was about 4 weeks old I was feeding her in a cafe and an old man stared for the whole time then walked up to me, kind of smirked, and said "I bet you enjoyed that" in a really gross lecherous way. ..
Other than that I've had nothing but kindness, offers of water, offers of playing with toddler while I fed baby etc etc.

I never had an issue but then I was relatively discreet - out of choice. I don't want people seeing my stretch marked boobs!
I've seen women pull their entire breast out though and receive funny looks for doing so, quite rightly. One woman was asked to leave a local bar for leaving her breast out for over 10 mins whilst rocking baby to sleep! Some seem to enjoy the negative attention.

I did leave the room to feed, when in-laws were visiting though. I just couldn't imagine exposing my 42GGs in the same room as my FIL, even with my back turned. That thought gives me the chills! 🤣

I have some breastvests which are like a vest underneath but you don't have to pull it down.

Happy mama do vests with a flap you like.

Love juno Jack's tops with the hidden double zip!

Facebook group can I breastfeed in it UK selling page for some second hand stuff.

I've been bf for over 4 years now. First was 3 when he stopped, now I'm bf the baby. I haven't had many comments at all but they do tend to only feed at home when they get older, unless they hurt themselves.

@LaurieMarlow

I don’t believe it either! Most likely she left breast “out” for a minute as she forgot or something, then put it away.

Yep. We need a name for the magical phenomena whereby time slows right down when boobs are ‘out’.

It’s an under researched feature of physics.

Also isn't it illegal to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave or cover up?

Wtf is ostentatious breastfeeding? It sounds awfully fancy and clever. Somebody teach me.

@Dougalthesyrianhamster what's with the arched eyebrow? Are women not allowed to enjoy breastfeeding?

No, nor do I. It's like the women who "prance around naked" in communal changing rooms. I hear about them on Mumsnet but I've been using communal changing rooms for 15 years and I've never seen anyone "prance around naked" inside them. I've never seen a breastfeeding woman leave her tits hanging out for no reason either.

I didn't bf with my first 2 because I was very young with the first and to be honest, I was too embarrassed. With the second I just thought again, I won't be able to do it. I'm now pregnant with the third and want to breastfeed so I hope I don't have any problems while out and about, but I'm at a point in my life now where I will probably just tell anyone who annoys me to fuck off.
