Please help regarding Termination

Sorry to post here I just really need urgent advice and experiences. I have to have an abortion. I'm already 11+6 and my area is only doing medical abortions due to COVID. I'm so so scared of going through this and the pain, does anyone have any experience of this they can share with me as I'm absolutely terrified. Thank you

Hi. I've spoken to my local abortion clinic already. They're not doing surgicals at all and are doing medical abortion up to 18 weeks due to Covid. The woman I spoke to said it would be pretty painful.

Can you ring your GP and ask about a prescription for Diazepam (Valium) or prescription strength painkillers? If not then if you are able to tolerate codeine then you can buy codeine and paracetamol mixed as an over the counter drug. I am so sorry you’re having to go through this.

I'm so sorry OP. It can be painful, but it can also just be like a bad period. A hot water bottle, painkillers and as suggested above try and get a prescription for a strong sedative. I'm sorry you're so scared. I wish someone there with you would be a bit more reassuring. Hopefully the kind words of these lovely Mumsnetters helps. Please don't be terrified. The worrying is worse than the actual thing. It'll be ok.

No advice but bumping for you. When will you have it? Do you have someone who can be with you?

Hi, sorry you have to go through this. I’ve had one and I’ll be honest, it was painful. the drugs they give you (assuming you’re having the drugs) are strong stuff so ask for a pain relief injection if you're having It in hospital as that did work to an extent.

Please don’t stress. Where I live, they actually only offer surgical up to 12 weeks anyway. After that, you have to go medical.
The first time I had the medication, it did not work. However that was probably because I took both medications on the same day. When they realised what had happened, I went back to stay in the hospital (3 days after taking the first pill) and they supervised it all to make sure the pregnancy had passed. I genuinely felt very little pain. I would have been 13 weeks. I didn’t even get given the strongest painkillers available and genuinely it was okay. Bring a hot water bottle. Everyone is different but just wanted to reassure you.

Thanks all. Will definitely ask GP re painkillers. @bridecilla not sure yet but probably in the next week. Am not 100% but seems like the best decision right now. Doesn’t make it any easier. @alonelonelyloner thank you. I have to stay in the hospital for the day. Would I be allowed to take a hot water bottle in do you think?

I have pretty bad period cramps usually but I don’t know if they’re actually bad on the whole or if I just have a low pain tolerance.

OP be kind to yourself. Ask gp for stronger pain killers like high strength co-codamol, get ibuprofen as you can take together. Lots hot water bottles. Perhaps sleeping tablet to help at night

Nooo please don’t take it like that. I was the weird tiny minority outlier that it didn’t work for! Even the hospital were a bit like 🤔 the first time! It’s more effective the further spaced the tablets are I believe, the issue I had was they were literally like 4 hours apart or something.

@greentangerine it's just cause I've seen other stories of medical abortions that've failed, and it seems like the further along you are the more likely it is that that may happen. Appreciate it's not common though! Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

I had a medical abortion last year at 5 weeks. I was scanned first to see how far along I was. They don’t show you this though so you won’t see it.

I got given the tablets one after the other, got handed some codeine and went home.

Unfortunately it didn’t work and I had to go back in for another tablet - I think because I had them both at the same time but I just did what they told me!

That kicked things off and within 6 hours I miscarried.

Just make sure you have a hot water bottle and take the pain killers they give you. Try and get hold of some maternity pads too.

The pain I experience wasn’t too bad, it was quite achey so a hot bath helped.

Are you ok lovely? Talk it out on here if you need to. I had one years ago- I was 100% certain and don't feel any different 17 years later. Actually, its 17 years this week. I only know because it was 2 days before my niece was born. Even with a new baby in the family I didn't waiver. The decision has to be right though as I know some do regret it.

@bridecilla not really no I can't say I'm 100% or ever will be, I'm just scared of continuing and it turns out to be the wrong decision. Don't want to end up regretting it either way but would rather regret an abortion than a baby iykwim. My heads been a complete mess since I found out. Thanks so much for asking

Hi, I just wanted to help alleviate your worry with a positive story. I had a medical abortion at 9+6 last year.

Went home to pass the foetus and genuinely there was no pain at all. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen as a precaution just in case there was pain, so that may have 'numbed' it a little, but honestly, just a slight squeezing and the urge to run to the loo.

I had one pill on the Tuesday 9am, the next on the Wednesday 9am and it was about 11am when it began to pass. Over by 5pm and then period-like bleeding for about a week, followed by a few days of spotting.

I was absolutely terrified of 'seeing' it but didn't, it's just dark blood. Honestly I had a really good experience - at least the best an abortion experience can be.

I had a medical abortion about 15 years ago. I was 10 weeks. I wouldn't really of said it hurt, just mainly period type cramps. Just try and relax and go with the flow, if you are anxious or worried it won't help with the pain or the passing. Take care

Does anyone know of any private clinics where I could pay for a surgical? I'm in Scotland and there are none but would travel if I was able to
