Best ground coffee?

overweightcat · 16/06/2020 13:00

Making a hamper for DH for Father's Day. We've recently tried a small pot of ground coffee in a cafetière as opposed to our usual instant stuff we have for home and he really liked it. It was just Illy Classico.

I want to maybe get one or two types for the hamper for him/us to try next. He will be back at work soon and said he will be taking his own coffee from now on rather than buy it so I don't mind getting something nice. I saw a whittards hazelnut blend but not sure if it's any good.

Any recommendations or links?

Another vote for Lavazza

mogloveseggs · 16/06/2020 15:21

Another for lazy Sunday. It's lovely and I'm not a big coffee fan.
Also illy coffee is nice too.

PumpkinPiloter · 16/06/2020 15:23

I am a bit of a coffee snob. The best thing to do would be to order a few bags of freshly roasted coffee from RAVE. or another roaster. Fresh coffee is so much better than old coffee. Failing that I think M&S house blend is better than anything else you'd ill find at a supermarket and I have tried many.

Justnot · 16/06/2020 15:25

Marks & Spencer Italian ground coffee

pointythings · 16/06/2020 15:32

Lavazza is good, as are supermarket finest ranges - Aldi's single origin coffees are extremely good value for money.

If you want a step up from those, you need to go to online micro roasteries. I use Silver Oak - their coffee is all ethically sourced, their range varies because it's small batch and seasonal and they provide good tasting notes. You can get your grind matched to your brewing method too.

Once you're into good filter coffee, there's no going back. Welcome to the dark (roast) side!

namechangenumber2 · 16/06/2020 15:39

I'd really like to get a cafetière, can anyone recommend a good one? I've just been eyeing up the Bodum one on Amazon

drigon · 16/06/2020 15:40

I actually love Whittard's hazelnut coffee, but find it too pricey for me. I think Lidl Kenyan is delicious. Not too keen on the dark Italian/ espresso coffees. It's all personal preference, really. My father in law loves a Columbian coffee, I think they're a good, medium strength, in general.

ellabella18 · 16/06/2020 15:41

Taylor's of Harrogate Italian blend is my favSmile

Thelnebriati · 16/06/2020 15:42

Lidl Extra Special take a lot of beating, and it still under £2 a pack.

DoraemonDingDong · 16/06/2020 15:49

We usually have Lavazza red at home, when we splurge, we buy freshly ground from a local independent coffee shop.

They have loads of different blends, it's taken a lot of hard work, trial and error, to find our favourite blend Wink We buy that every once in a while when we want a treat.

Do you have any coffee shops nearby? Maybe get a voucher for them for your DH to try their selection?

IsMiseMorag · 16/06/2020 15:49

Is there a local roaster you could support with an order?

I really like Method coffee or Carvetii coffee - both independents.

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 16/06/2020 16:19

I get PACT coffee delivered each month, you might be in time to get one to include this sunday..... lovely coffee

AnnaNimmity · 16/06/2020 16:34

Lavazza or a tin of Illy.

vintagesewingmachine · 16/06/2020 16:38

I agree with PP about loving the idea of flavoured coffees but, once tried, they are revolting. However, last Christmas, a very dear friend spoiled us with a hamper from a very famous Knightsbridge department store and their Spiced Coffee was absolutely delicious. Luckily, DH did not like it at all so I had it all to myself😁. We love Taylor's of Harrogate Italian Roast too but have also had some really good ones from Aldi and Lidl.

AlessandroVasectomi · 16/06/2020 16:40

Illy for when we’re flush, but Morrison’s ‘The Best’ Columbian blend for everyday drinking. Medium strength, fairly sweet flavour and £3 a bag.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 16/06/2020 16:43

Taylor’s of Harrogate lazy Sunday is my fave but Aldi do a dupe calledlazy days or something which Dh swears is just as good. I’ve ordered from Whittaker’s this week so am looking forward to trying the fresh ground ones I chose along with my double insulated mug which is why I was on the site in the first place #spendingabloodyfortuneinlockdown

Lonelycrab · 16/06/2020 16:48

Lavazza here too. Beats the supermarket finest blends I think. It’s on special at my Tesco, £3 a packet so I’m bulk buying at the moment.

Defiantly41 · 16/06/2020 16:58

Lavazza Qualita Oro (gold pack) is even nicer than the Rosso.

Or for a real treat, get a selection from Colombia Coffee Roasters in Oxford, they do subscriptions and one- off orders by post
www.colombiacoffeeroasters.co.uk

Their gentleman's espresso blend or red honey finca la porvenir are fabulous

TheHighestSardine · 16/06/2020 17:17

Lavazza gold, yep - smoother than the red. The red is fine though.

I actually get my coffee from www.redmonkeycoffee.co.uk , and they do the only decaf espresso in existance that you can't tell is decaff. They do lovely tasting multipacks. Too late for Sunday though unfortunately, posting is slow at the moment.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 16/06/2020 20:39

Dear Green - any of their blends are fantastic

cologne4711 · 16/06/2020 20:40

Lidl's Gold ground coffee is the best quality to price one I've ever found

Completely agree with this.

I also quite like Taylor's Lazy Sunday coffee.

Steakandsun · 16/06/2020 20:43

If he likes Illy then he will like Lavazza.

Wisteria1979 · 16/06/2020 20:45

Zoegas is lovely and strong - if you need it coarser they do Prezzo which works well in a cafetière. Good value for money and doesn’t look too bad either.

BlueVinca · 16/06/2020 20:45

Glitteryone - Azera is an instant coffee rather than ground coffee

ConstanceL · 16/06/2020 20:45

M&S Italian blend is nice, as are any of the Waitrose '1' range, particularly the Indonesian one ☕️
