Best ground coffee?

Making a hamper for DH for Father's Day. We've recently tried a small pot of ground coffee in a cafetière as opposed to our usual instant stuff we have for home and he really liked it. It was just Illy Classico.

I want to maybe get one or two types for the hamper for him/us to try next. He will be back at work soon and said he will be taking his own coffee from now on rather than buy it so I don't mind getting something nice. I saw a whittards hazelnut blend but not sure if it's any good.

Any recommendations or links?

Taylor's lazy Sunday is so nice and smooth

lidoshuffle · 16/06/2020 20:48

@namechangenumber2 I'd recommend an insulated one - the plain glass ones go cold quickly (but ok if you will be empying it on first pour).

I've got this Bodum one which I'd recommend:
cafetiere

My lockdown luxury was a subscription to PACT coffee (I had a code for my first delivery for only £1 and it was a no-obligation/cancel anytime offer so ultimately a no-brainer). I was so impressed by the quality of the coffee, the communications from the company (ie not bombarded by desperate emails), the packaging and information about the growers/blenders, plus, of course, the option to tweak your order dependent on your taste preferences and equipment requirements. I have decided to continue the subscription as, for me it represents good value for money, and is a much-needed small treat to help cure my lockdown blues.

Grumpy Mule Honduras pico.
Best ground coffee

RubyFakeLips · 16/06/2020 20:51

Also vote for Taylors Lazy Sunday and Grind

My very exciting lockdown life has involved buying the coffee from the various chains and doing a blind taste test. Starbucks Blonde Roast was the winner in this.

I am a bit of a coffee fan. There are various super-expensive ground coffees which are very nice - but in real life, the best ones I've found are M&S, Sainsbury's Fairtrade and Tesco Finest. Waitrose is also good (their own label). I generally like Lidl, but am not keen on their coffee.

LellyMcKelly · 16/06/2020 21:00

Whittaker’s hazelnut coffee is truly awful. I’m a fan of a Colombian for everyday drinking and a Whittards is nice. The Lidl Gold Colombian is fabulous and incredible value for money and the Asda Extra Special Colombian is also lovely.

Lavazza Crema e gusto (blue packet) or Rosso (red).

If he's getting into coffee, maybe get him a stovetop coffee maker - loads nicer than cafetierre.

Roseburn · 16/06/2020 21:06

a stovetop coffee maker

Yes! This is what we use, not a cafetiere

Redpriestandmozart · 16/06/2020 21:15

We have recently been buying decaf as we've drunk so much we have the jitters! We've been using Pelican Rouge from Amazon and it's lovely.

Moominmammaatsea · 16/06/2020 21:18

My recent birthday gift from my sibling was an Aeropress coffee maker - and a zealous lecture about the inverted method. Apparently, there are dozens of videos I need to watch on YouTube. It’s still in the box, waiting for it’s grand unboxing when I’m not frazzled from being a single parent to a disabled Y7 child and literally spoon feeding her through her distance learning day while simultaneously trying to entertain a high-needs/highly active toddler.

One day soon I will get to enjoy the perfect cup of coffee at the temperature I wish to drink it - without being talked at in stereo.

Winterwoollies · 16/06/2020 21:20

Lavazza Oro, the gold one. It’s very well-rounded.

Tonz · 16/06/2020 21:23

Another vote for Taylors lazy Sunday. Only problem I si drink far too much of it

Heko · 16/06/2020 21:23

Have a look at frontline coffee. All profits go to charities that support front line services

4Smalls · 16/06/2020 21:25

Splash out and buy him a coffee grinder and whole beans. No going back once you get used to freshly ground coffee in the morning.

SurferRona · 17/06/2020 08:16

Sheesh, don't get flavoured coffee!!! (Unless cardoman arabian as per PP!). For a nice gift, don't get supermarket stuff, buy from indie coffee place. The blend Drake by The Roasting Party is extraordinary, and they post. Otherwise Union coffee from Waitrose is a tolerable alternative Grin. Ideally get him a little grinder for work, 20£ from Argos for the best homemade coffee.

cologne4711 · 17/06/2020 08:25

I would try a local coffee roaster but they don't provide a ground version and I don't want to pay £££ for a bean to cup machine. Maybe when my current filter machine eventually gives up the ghost.

I have ordered (ground) coffee from Coopers in Jersey - it is very yummy and arrives quickly - definitely a lockdown treat.

overweightcat · 17/06/2020 09:03

Thanks everyone! Some great suggestions!
We have a cafetière for now so will stick to it for the time being and maybe think of a stovetop maker at another stage if we get into the whole coffee thing.

I'm hoping for us to try a few different ones and pick one we like for everyday so not too extravagant.
I went to tesco yesterday and went for Taylor's Lazy Sunday and Lavazza to pop in the hamper for him as so many of you recommended them.

We only drink ground coffee in a cafetiere here. Grumpy Mule is lovely, Marley coffee is good too. Not so keen on Taylors, but we tried the Lavazzo a few weeks ago and that was nice, and shop bought so easier to get.

Tittytittydoomdoom · 18/06/2020 13:50

@cologne4711 that’s annoying your local coffee place won’t grind the beans for you, is that a Covid thing? My local will take them out the packet and run them through their machine and then put them back in - obv it’s then unsealed so not great as a gift but useful!

HariboLectar · 18/06/2020 14:18

I have a couple of recommendations but all online so maybe too late now

Two Chimps
The Blending Room

D3l1v3ryDayDHLll · 18/06/2020 14:31

Have these in the kitchen, from travels before lockdown

Jamaican blue Mountain
Cuban from their supermarket
Indonesian civet coffee Grin
