Why are ASDA normalising paedophilia and Child Abuse?

Sunkisses · 16/06/2020 08:02

Is it OK for ASDA to send parents emails linking to an organisation that normalises paedophilia with red flag phrases such as "love has no age", and recommending books for children that contain explicit descriptions of child sex abuse? Why are they doing this? Are ASDA experts in home schooling and safeguarding? More details in this excellent thread by Safe Schools Alliance: twitter.com/SafeSchools_UK/status/1272638132589035520

Here's a previous thread about what Warwickshire County Council approved as groundbreaking RSE materials (now removed I think due to pressure from women here, among others)

The scary thing is... Just looking at the email itself (not clicking through any links), it looks very positive!

Asda will know all about the psychology of persuasive marketing. Together with the experienced lobbies, they can and will worm their way into people's minds.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/06/2020 09:51

Yes, Asda may not know much about children's education or appropriate safeguarding practice but one thing they do know about is marketing.

FranCan · 16/06/2020 09:51

oh dear, oh dear, some junior markateer in asda will be in big trouble

gingganggooleywotsit · 16/06/2020 09:51

Really sad reading. Why is everyone so determined to make kids grow up so fast, why the hell do we need to make them so aware of other's "kinks" from an early age? Shame on Asda for not putting more thought into this.

StayinginSummer · 16/06/2020 09:54

Also, where is the evidence for any of this sexualisation ‘promotion’ with children?

There is massive evidence about safeguarding, and also how to build resilience, good relationship skills, awareness of sex for children. How can this good evidence just be trampled over by lobbying groups for their own agenda? Evidence is there for a reason, it is impartial, objective, looks at the effects and outcomes.

Xenia · 16/06/2020 09:54

I thought this thread would be about sale of crop tops or something. Anyway not a good idea for ASDA to get involved in political issues at all. Just stick to selling food is a lot safer.

fuckinghellthisshit · 16/06/2020 09:54

It's like that time when Cartman went to the man boy lobe association! Oh no, wait, this is real. FFS

Trevsadick · 16/06/2020 09:56

No they won't.

I worked at Asda HQ. There is no chance, this was a 'juniors' decisions.

Even creating a HR poster, to assist staff to know how to book their holidays on lone has to go through about 15 different people. Who make sure its all legally correct, uses the correct font, correct colours, is grammatically correct, doesnt offend and is finally fact checked by a member of SLT. And that's for an internal poster for staff rooms and an internal email.

Not a chance did no one very senior not actually look into this.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/06/2020 09:57

Of course heads will roll

Take a pragmatic look at the Asda client demographic
And take a view as their views and religious views towards this , the pro trans ideaology lives with a very small demographic

It’s a massive own goal fuck up

Clymene · 16/06/2020 09:57

It's not Asda's job to teach children about sex and they really need to do better due diligence before sending out this sort of stuff.

The mention of LGBT seems to make many organisations brain dissolve

FemaleAndLearning · 16/06/2020 09:58

Some good resources on Safe School Alliance
safeschoolsallianceuk.net/resources-2/factsheets/
These can be used to talk to your school if you are concerned about the new compulsory RSE - relationships and sex education from September. All schools are supposed to consult with parents. If your school is using The Proud Trust or Diversity Role Models I would be very concerned.

@StripesWaterBlue

FFS

In their primary pack 7 year old kids are supposed to learn about the following:

  • a man who is attracted to a woman or a woman who is attracted to a man
  • a man or woman who is attracted to men and women
  • Bisexual someone who doesn't feel like the gender they were given at birth
  • Transgender a woman who is attracted to other women
  • Heterosexual a man who is attracted to a man or a woman who is attracted to a woman

^copied from their 'learning pack.

What's the emphasis in attraction and love. I actually feel sick. Thankfully I have never shopped with Asda and certainly won't in the future.

eleventy3isthemagicnumber Tue 16-Jun-20 08:15:18

That extract is deeply disturbing

The whole pack has a brainwash feel to it. They're using clever psychology to really get into the kids' minds.

Utterly fucking irresponsible and revolting.

Whilst I totally agree that these materials shouldn't be sent to families, or used in schools without very close scrutiny, the page you've copied is for children to join the name with the correct definitions. Are you saying children shouldn't know these?
Ninkanink · 16/06/2020 09:59

It is being driven by a very determined, very predatory faction which has been allowed to become very powerful.

Corporations might be mistakenly aligning themselves because they’re stupid enough to think woke points will make them money (hint: it really, really won’t) and have not completed due diligence, but make no mistake about it, behind the scenes this absolutely is the intended result. And they want much, much more.

Please, go and read and prepare to become incensed.

Wiltinglillies · 16/06/2020 09:59

A lot of it, esp the Primary pack, reads like very normal sex ed resources, but you'd never send those home. Each would be used as part of a specific session with very clear goals around consent, trust, respect etc. This would be delivered by people who trained.

Just sending them out into the ether is really dangerous. Whoever said parents might just forward the email to their kids is absolutely right and what was anyone thinking regarding that book extract. Even if it is part of a more complex story it appears to normalise abuse! What would that do to the teen just plucking up the courage to speak to someone after the realisation that they'd suffered abuse?

I don't think Asda will be able to sweep this away.

WhatIsLife20 · 16/06/2020 10:01

😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯 shocking

Alsohuman · 16/06/2020 10:02

@StripesWaterBlue

Asda will just get a super PR spin to make it all blow over.

@Asda I want those links to 'learning packs' gone by cob. Get on with it.

There’s no PR that can make this go away. Huge, huge mistake Asda, it’s almost as if they and Body Shop want to lose customers. Neither of them will ever see a penny of my money again.

Jonsnowscodpiece · 16/06/2020 10:05

Has a pp already emailed? Would you be able to share the address you used and does anyone have suggestions on how to set down these concerns? I'm not very good at this sort of thing. I'm a regular Asda shopper but this is sickening.

TheSingingKettle49 · 16/06/2020 10:07

If anyone is considering boycotting Asda then Co-op are feeding the children who get free school meals that go to their Co-op run schools during the summer, they’re also helping the families of NHS workers who’ve died from Corona virus to pay for their funerals if they can’t afford to. Y’know, cos that’s Co-op’s area of expertise!

truthisarevolutionaryact · 16/06/2020 10:07

Trevsadick
I suspect that Asda have been caught out - just as the government, schools and countless businesses by assuming that because something has been produced or suggested by one of the many LGBT++ organisations, that it's OK.
As several posters have pointed out above, when you work in safeguarding / with children you know that predators will exploit any loophole to access children for their own reasons. But we've created a group where to even raise a concern, including about safeguarding, is now see as homophobic or transphobic.
The initial response of the NSPCC when an employee was caught posting photos online of himself in fetish gear in the toilets in the workplace was to call everyone who objected "homophobic bigots". It took some time before they remembered their core purpose was safeguarding children and reined it all in and got rid of him. If that's the response of the leading children's safeguarding charity then how on earth can schools and companies like ASDA get this right?
It's terrifying to see the safeguarding of children being openly rolled back in this way.

WhatIsLife20 · 16/06/2020 10:08

This is what happens in a world where people can identify as tea pots if they wish, marry train stations and people caught with child abuse images on their computers get a slap on the wrist and no punishment.

We're gearing towards a very messed up world

StayinginSummer · 16/06/2020 10:09

@Soontobe60 I totally agree. At primary age the children should be learning about friendships, love, about body privacy, how babies are made, awareness and prevention of bullying, feeling confident, ability to say no. Awareness in a very broad brush way of different kinds of relationships. Alongside difference and how difference is okay.

The foundational stuff is incredibly important and priority.

They do not need specific words and agendas shoved down their throats. They need to learn about what is around them, their families, their friends. How to be emotionally healthy.

Jumblebumblemess · 16/06/2020 10:10

Love knows no age????? Wtf am I reading from one of the biggest supermarkets in the world! Jesus I am gobsmacked and horrified that they are putting these "learning packs" out that are 'sponsored' by PIE.
