I don’t think I believe in “God” anymore

I feel really low today, my trigger was reading an online story about how Madeline’s body might be found in a few days as police think it’s 30 mins from hotel in a well. I’m sorry I stopped reading so details might not be fully accurate. My eldest daughter has just turned 4 and it’s really upset me thinking what Maddie might have gone through in her last moments.

I know some people will respond negatively to me and hence the name change. I’m really struggling to think how can God really exist and let awful and evil things happen all the time. My faith has really been tested over the years and I do not believe in God anymore.

My gran used to say that some of us need to suffer for most of us to learn a lesson. It was her way of explaining truly despicable acts in relation to her faith (Hindu raised by Catholic nuns so her faith was complex). It isn’t a perfect answer but when you look at the Bible (with Jesus) or the Gita (with Arjun) or the Qu’ran the pages are full of suffering as a method of teaching. Buddhism as a religion was even built around it.

LiesHumansTellThemselves · 16/06/2020 00:13

There is no God. Only random chaos.

When you realise this everything gets a lot easier.

SuperSleepyBaby · 16/06/2020 00:27

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
Epicurus

BashStreetKid · 16/06/2020 00:36

God gave man free will

Man uses that free will to do evil deeds

God doesn't intervene, because it would mean taking back our free will

But how does that account for horrible things that have nothing to do with evil deeds by men, like natural disasters and children born with horrible, immensely painful conditions?

priya38 · 16/06/2020 00:47

I don't believe in god but I believe in karma and past life's and reincarnation.

That answers all my questions as to why we all as individuals go through bad things in life. Some worse than others.

CustardySergeant · 16/06/2020 00:51

Epicurus put it succinctly well over 2 thousand years ago

I don’t think I believe in “God” anymore

So are you saying you believe that sick and disabled people have done something evil in a past life?
WinterAndRoughWeather · 16/06/2020 00:55

Priya38

Why does it need an explanation? Shit happens. It doesn’t need to be complicated.

For crying out loud! God does not make things happen, or not happen, that's just life. God is there, if people believe in him, to help people to come to terms with what has happened and many people find comfort from that.

If you don't want to believe in God then don't, but the people who question why things happen as if God is sitting there pulling the strings are just being ridiculous.

priya38 · 16/06/2020 00:58

@WinterAndRoughWeather

So you don't believe in cause and effect. Shit does happen yes, but for a reason. Everything we do in life has consequences, if they didn't the world wouldn't be balanced.

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2020 00:59

Oh my fucking God.

As if sick and disabled people don't have enough to contend with in their lives, without people thinking they were once evil bastards???

I've never been more happy to be an atheist (raised as a Catholic) after reading that nasty nonsense.

DisobedientHamster · 16/06/2020 00:59

Say if someone's born blind, maybe in a past life they through acid in someone eyes and blinded them. Btw this could go back to the Egyptian ages even.

Okaaaaayyyy . . . backs away slowly. Sorry but that sounds even more fucked up than believing in God.

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2020 01:01

I am yes, but that's just my belief.

Just for clarity, my last post was a reply to this one.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 16/06/2020 01:01

But eagle in the OP’s case, the opposite has happened - god has not provided comfort or helped her come to terms with how shitty life can be.

You can’t have it both ways. God is either an explanation or he isn’t.

AgeLikeWine · 16/06/2020 01:02

First of all, it’s ‘Madeleine’, not ‘Maddie’. The latter is used by the tabloids, but has never been used by the McCann family.

Secondly, welcome to the atheist club! Humans invented ‘god’ to explain stuff they didn’t understand. Now, we have a much better method of explaining the world around us and the universe in which our world exists. It’s called science, and it uses facts, evidence & data Instead of myth, superstition and bullshit, sorry ‘faith’.

DisobedientHamster · 16/06/2020 01:02

So you don't believe in cause and effect. Shit does happen yes, but for a reason.

So a child who gets a horrible disease and dies or is in a house that's bombed in a war or a girl who's married off as a child to an old perv and forced to give birth whilst a young teen um, deserves it because they were shit in a past life? For real?

Mind.blown.

Yeah, the reason is the randomness of the universe, like the way stars are born and die or solar flares or planets with many moons. Totally random.

priya38 · 16/06/2020 01:04

@WorraLiberty

I'm not being nasty. I'm saying that I believe in karma and past life's.

It's a deep topic and I doubt anyone around here is will to listen to it so I'll shut up 🤐

eaglejulesk · 16/06/2020 01:10

But eagle in the OP’s case, the opposite has happened - god has not provided comfort or helped her come to terms with how shitty life can be.

The OP has to want to believe and also to actually help herself. Once again it's not a question of God looking down and thinking the OP needs comfort or help. Many of you don't seem to understand religion and think it's all a one way thing. Also the people who need the help here are Madeline's family surely, not the OP!!

MadCattery · 16/06/2020 01:10

Priya38-There is a balance to lives we live, but sometimes we make a choice to be born blind, or with serious disabilities. Sometimes we need to learn particular lessons and sometimes we do it as a kindness, to help others learn compassion and caring. Just my belief.

I once had a friend who was on and off with a guy, but this was going on for years. Very rocky all throughout. But he'd always end up coming back to her.

She went to see a past life regression therapist once and the woman told her that the guy she was seeing can't leave her alone as she had a karmic debt to repay him from a past life. Basically in a past life she was this guys mother and she abandoned him as a small child. That's why their connection this lifetime was so rocky and they could never be together properly.
That's why he kept returning.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 16/06/2020 01:16

I understand religion eagle, that’s why I’m not religious anymore.

Paska · 16/06/2020 01:19

That sounds like it'd lead to a healthy relationship...

Yes we do I agree. But my belief is slightly different. Have you heard of the Akashi records? This is where all our karma gets stored. Before we were born in this lifetime I believe our souls gets to choose which life it's going to live for the lessons it needs to learn. So the bad things we go through in life are lessons for our souls growth purpose.
But your karma is still used as we have debts to pay back.

So the example with the baby being born blind. Maybe he needed to learn how to feel and that's why he was born unable to see.

It's a deep topic.
