We bought a house 6 months ago. Needs new everything, carpets, kitchen, bathroom etc.

We needed new sofas as well

Everything is grey. There are various different shades and shapes but grey.

Grey fucking grey.

Even trying to get curtains 294782927 grey.

Even buying baby toys for the baby. Grey play mats ffs.
Grey ball pits?! With grey balls?!

I used to like grey.

I love grey, we love a feature wall and grey looks nice against them. We've got a brown feature wall in the living room, blue in the dining room, purple in our room and dinosaur wallpaper in the eldests bedroom. We've got blue cabinets in the kitchen against grey too. The hallway isn't grey and the nursery is cream with colourful nursery wallpaper

burdog · 17/06/2020 13:44

We were looking for houses in 2015. So many houses were decorated in grey all over. I admit I quite like a bit of grey, used with the correct colours it can be quite pretty, but not all over. I'm currently painting our house since it's all done out in various shades of sludge-toned cream and mauve that was popular about 10 years ago and it just looks a bit dingy.

PickAChew · 17/06/2020 13:50

I'm not a fan of grey but have still ended up with 2 grey sofas, "rolling fog pale" kitchen walls, which is a greigy off white and I'm doing my hallway "gauze - mid" which is a pale blue-grey. The rest of the house is mostly soft blues, greens and pinks, though. I'm using the greys as a neutral rather than as the predominant colour.

PickAChew · 17/06/2020 13:53

Grey will now go out of fashion very quickly

Funnily enough, I was searching for opinions on a particular paint, the other week, and came across an 8 year old mumsnet thread saying this! Admittedly, 2012 was probably peak grey.

DuckALaurent · 17/06/2020 14:07

I love a warm neutral, we’ve F&B Oxford Stone in a lot of rooms. It’s cosy and soothing. I also like Bleached Lichen from Dulux which is a warm grey.

We then have colour on the sofas/ cushions/curtains.

I would take your time. Set up a Pinterest board and start adding pictures you like. Think about the feeling of a room. If you want a comfy welcoming sitting room then a warm grey/neutral, cosy textured rugs, some candles, wood, different textured cushions will all give it that welcoming feel. Look at the detail of rooms you like.

@DuckALaurent

If you like grey have grey!

Theres loads of trends I'm not into, I'm not into the all grey. I am not into this new one which seems for all walls to be white and everything being very minimal except that theres plants everywhere. But just because me or anyone here isnt keen on these things it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.

Maybe if you want to keep it that kind of soft greyish theme maybe just get a grey with an undertone colour like a slightly lilacy or blue grey. We have a grey wall in living room but it has green undertones and it looks really nice.

littledrummergirl · 17/06/2020 14:32

I like grey walls, they give a good background and provide continuity. We've added white and different shades of blue in all rooms with pastels to add some colour.
Every room has its own feel.

Devlesko · 17/06/2020 14:46

It seemed to be in fashion far too long.
Good news, it's considered so last year, the year before, the year before etc.
Not something that interests me, so didn't read any further than the headline. Grin
Good luck, people make their houses so boring these days.

DuckALaurent · 17/06/2020 14:48

@Railingsohno thank you hugely for the paint tips and the advice. I’ll look those up. I’m not terrific with interior decor and struggle to get my ideas into reality so that’s great advice.

@Blahblooblah I love the ideas of going towards lilac or blue tones but still greyish! Thank you. I’d not thought of that but it’s a way for me to have grey around but not be too samey throughout.

Thanks for the advice. It’a unusual for us to be in a financial position to decorate a lot so I feel I want to get it right.

I’m not at all an expert but I’ve made a lot of grey mistakes! Where I went wrong was choosing too cold a colour. It doesn’t create a welcoming feel. So just be careful with that. If you google cosy grey sitting rooms then you can see how you can make a grey room feel more welcoming.

I follow peony and sage on Instagram. It’s very cottagey which you may not like but it’s gorgeous neutrals with soft linens and cosy rugs etc... very calming.

DuckALaurent · 17/06/2020 15:38

@Railingsohno thanks I’ll follow them. I would like a cottagey feel. We’ve just had the fireplace done with a stone hearth and oak beam so I’d like to keep it cosy neutral but with the colour added through furnishings or accessories. I really appreciate the tips.

The Peonyandsage site is lovely, do you know of any more fabric places like that please?

Nicedayforawedding · 17/06/2020 21:21

All my friends have grey as a base colour for their decor. It is as bad as beige in the 80s. I find it an energy zapping colour!

Alternatively, you could avoid grey altogether.

YourVagesty · 18/06/2020 11:32

Wall to wall grey is in its death throes, for sure.

In my new house I've gone for white, emerald green and dark wood in my lounge, and dark blue/white/dark wood for my kitchen. I've painted my office pastel pink.

Colour! Gorgeous colour everywhere.

My bedroom is still grey and the other four bedrooms are magnolia (a hangover from when they decorated by the last owners) but that will change in time.

I follow loads of interiors accounts on Instagram and I love that there's so many different styles going on - grey, cottagey, scandi, colourful, ones that look like hotel rooms, boho. I love looking at all the different styles, even the ones that don't reflect my preferences, and I think there's room for all of them.

I do think there's a slight element of classism in that people with a lower income (ie me!) are unlikely to have any inherited interesting pieces of furniture or be able to afford the £30k extension that opens up the dining room Smile. Even painting a room is time consuming to do yourself, requires confidence in your skills and is expensive to pay someone else, therefore to add their own stamp to a room people's main option is b&m and the range - a lot of which is grey and glittery and, in the opinion of some, dates quickly.

Yeahnahmum · 20/06/2020 08:52

We bought a house and all the walls are grey. All. The. Walls.

It is like living in a coffin Envy.
