We bought a house 6 months ago. Needs new everything, carpets, kitchen, bathroom etc.

We needed new sofas as well

Everything is grey. There are various different shades and shapes but grey.

Grey fucking grey.

Even trying to get curtains 294782927 grey.

Even buying baby toys for the baby. Grey play mats ffs.
Grey ball pits?! With grey balls?!

I used to like grey.

My OH wants blue in the livingroom lol, however I want the feature wall to be black or another strong colour.

tara66 · 15/06/2020 23:03

I once heard it referred to as 'Auwt*z grey' and that's all I can think of when I see it in pictures on Rightmove etc. So many houses were painted grey few years ago. Although with black and white it is truly neutral - it just seems to drain everything out of a room. A very difficult colour but people seem to think it is still fashionable.

Northernsoullover · 15/06/2020 23:08

I hate grey but I think I hate the phrase 'pop of colour' even more.

Nanalisa60 · 15/06/2020 23:10

I like grey but I think you need to add another colour into the mix I have a lots of teal in my living room mixed in with the grey.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/06/2020 23:10

We had a rented house with grey carpets when we lived in the US, at the time it made a nice change from the then-ubiquitous beige. That was ~1990....Grin

If you want coloured curtains etc, choose fabric and get them made.

You just get a job with F&B, paint naming division
'Weak tea nothingy colour that no one notices*

I like the sound of that.

I am fed up of grey. But I like greyed out colours, they are calm and classy looking. Might be an idea to paint walls or get accessories in those kind of colours to freshen up the things you cant so easily change

dayswithaY · 15/06/2020 23:11

Well we should all enjoy grey for as long as possible, the new trend for home decor apparently is brown, yes brown Shock

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 15/06/2020 23:22

I have red (it’s got some fancy name but someone on here referred to it as ‘menstruation red’. ) It’s awesome. And my dining room is royal blue and cream. It’s a bit like my house is a giant screaming Union Jack as an overview but I can’t deal with greige of any shade. My mental health suffers.
I had no idea they were making grey ball pits though. I feel a bit sick.

Who the heck decides that? Just say no!

Noooooooooo!
Truthpact · 15/06/2020 23:24

Brown? Ew..

Shinygreenelephant · 15/06/2020 23:24

My entire house is grey because DH loves it and I didn’t show any interest in the decorating until it was too late. Only rooms with colour are the kids rooms and the playroom. Ive bought some bright accessories to liven things up and he hates them, gives them dirty looks whenever he sets eyes on them. Getting a new kitchen soon though and I’m painting the walls yellow whether he likes it or not (he will not)

Nearlyalmost50 · 15/06/2020 23:27

I refused to get a grey sofa, my daughter was pleading with me to get one, but I told her, I'm sick of grey and it's on its way out. I won, it's boring oatmeal beige, but I much prefer it and I like blue cushions on it as well! I do have some greige curtains though so some of my rooms have a nearly grey vibe. I'm going back to the old classic matt white next time around, am fed up with sludge coloured walls and hate colours (except as accessories).

notangelinajolie · 16/06/2020 00:02

Post Covid, I think grey is a goner.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 16/06/2020 00:46

We recently redid our bathroom as it had a leak in the subfloor (for about the last 30 years)
The plumber/builder comment when it came to tiling “oh thank god it’s not another grey bathroom” so I guess he’s done a lot of them lately. (The bathroom is a bright blue and white)

But then I’m not a grey fan. I find it can be soulless and is the new renters Magnolia (from years of renting identically painted magnolia units).
Our playroom is a teal, kids bedrooms have their favourite colour so ones two tone purple and the other pinks and our room is a two tone yellow. (Above and below the picture rails)

Rumbletumbleinmytummy · 16/06/2020 01:29

Yeah it's a bit much isnt it with all the grey.
Over not been ficked to paint most of my house since I moved into it, so quite a lot of magnolia still. My bedroom is grey, the kitchen is cream and chrome, DDs bedroom white and pink and the living room was a happy accident. I was looked for a nice grey. I ended up with a lovely powder blue, it's so lovely and really brightens the room

Lifeisconfusing · 16/06/2020 02:02

I like grey and white it’s fresh!! I personally detest a house where nothing flows one room red one blue one green doesn’t work for me.

Defenbaker · 16/06/2020 02:14

YANBU, and I think it's odd that it became so popular. It's OK as a neutral background to showcase brightly coloured furnishings (eg red and orange) but I can't understand the fad for various shades of grey all over the house, especially the greige tones, that remind me of dirty dish water.

Even worse is the fad for grey UPVC window frames. Double glazing is pricey, so I think it's a real risk going for grey frames, as many people dislike them and that could put off buyers if you ever need to sell. To each their own, but I'm glad that the trend for grey seems to have had its day.

Pixxie7 · 16/06/2020 02:15

Love grey, can put so many colours with it.

1forAll74 · 16/06/2020 02:34

Yes too much grey everywhere, it's been a trend for quite a while now for some reason. Grey rooms look quite soul less, a bit like looking at dull grey skies outside, all quite depressing.

480Widdio · 16/06/2020 02:39

I really dislike grey, reminds me of battleships and planes and all things to do with war.

I follow an account on a Instagram, different houses, they are like clones of each other, grey and more grey, even the word sounds depressing.

strugglingwithdeciding · 16/06/2020 02:49

Nope love my grey walls (very light )and carpet and just have colour accessories cushions , rugs , towels etc

947EliseChalotte · 16/06/2020 02:55

Someone I know has had a new bathroom ..grey floor tiles, grey wall tiles , grey towels, grey asseseries......to be honest...it's like being in a cave! Grey will soon be out of fashion and look dated. Can't be classic timeless colours.

strugglingwithdeciding · 16/06/2020 02:58

Also not a fan of every room a totally different t colour and even less so with carpet
Will stick to my wooden floor downstairs and grey carpet on stairs and all bedrooms apart from kids rooms all rooms are technically grey although frontroom and kitchen is more white with hint of grey and looks very fresh , bathroom grey walls but all tiles and bath etc white with purple accessories and towels for colour .
Toilet white walls grey skirting and yellow /grey accessories

Mintjulia · 16/06/2020 04:15

Poor you. Grey’s very chic and effective if you have the Mediterranean outside the window and bright Spanish light. But England in February....! It just looks institutional and grim.

But emulsion is inexpensive. Look at it as a blank canvas for your creativity Smile
