We bought a house 6 months ago. Needs new everything, carpets, kitchen, bathroom etc.

We needed new sofas as well

Everything is grey. There are various different shades and shapes but grey.

Grey fucking grey.

Even trying to get curtains 294782927 grey.

Even buying baby toys for the baby. Grey play mats ffs.
Grey ball pits?! With grey balls?!

I used to like grey.

Lots goes with grey...pink, blue, er...white. or buy colourful curtains and put wallhangings and pictures up.

Drysnitchinsbitchin · 16/06/2020 04:42

Usually you see a lovely old house sold, someone moves in, within a year the mature trees and plants are ripped up, astro turf is put down, and the fences and house are painted...

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/06/2020 05:25

First house I moved into, everything was covered in elephant grey carpet. The hall was pale blue walls, and the living room had pale yellow walls. It was like living in a 90s computer room.

Couldn't afford to change the hall and stairs carpet, so I painted everything in a very dusky pink, to lift the grey - it did work, along with white banisters on the stairs and white wood trim. Still probably not at all modern in terms of a "look" now, but pink is a good way to warm up grey. I don't even like pink - that's why I used a very dusky one.

Not a fan of grey either. When I moved in this house five years ago, it was grey throughout. Just so municipal somehow. We now have colour!

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 16/06/2020 06:21

I found it quite depressing when doing my DD's nursery last year as bloody everything was grey.

However I do quite like pale grey t-shirts and dresses. It suits my colouring.

rayoflightboy · 16/06/2020 06:38

I agree,our bedroom was grey.Not our doing,it was my D's room.

I changed it ,black Japanese wallpaper, but I can't get a plain black duvet cover for love nor money
Grey is such a drab colour,I don't understand it's popularity

Oh Lord I remember when everyone had burgundy & grey years ago, but 50 shades of grey just ain’t on. Never had it, I like all things bright & beautiful.

testing987654321 · 16/06/2020 08:02

I thought you meant outside, grey wooden fences just look awful, and the other day we saw two Victorian town houses painted dark grey.

We need a bit of brightness outside people!!

OutComeTheWolves · 16/06/2020 08:12

Grey hair and grey clouds annoy me. Everything else grey I can cope with though.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/06/2020 08:13

Someone I know has had a new bathroom ..grey floor tiles, grey wall tiles , grey towels, grey asseseries......to be honest...it's like being in a cave! Grey will soon be out of fashion and look dated. Can't be classic timeless colours.

We had our shower room done recently, it's got dark grey floor and paler grey tiles - because they were about the only options available which weren't downright ugly. And, as a neutral base, grey can be 'classic and timeless' - it's not the burnt orange, aubergine or avocado of my formative years! But of course the towels etc aren't also grey. It's grey on grey which is so dull and really doesn't work in many environments.

I blame farrow and ball for making interesting names for dull colours.Grin

monkeyonthetable · 16/06/2020 08:16

YES!!! I absolutely hate it. Especially grey carpets. Very especially those thick pile grey carpets that people hoover patterns into. When you add grey walls, sofas, kitchens and bathrooms it's utterly barren and bleak. Worse than the bland beige that came before it. Grey carpets make everywhere look like a failing sales office from 1980s. Grim.

Pumpertrumper · 16/06/2020 08:27

We recently had the outside woodwork redone on our new house (think large cottage, rural village) my god there was about 5 billion options of grey but non called grey, it’s all ‘mist, dove, pigeon, cloud, slate, rain’ FFS!!

We went with a cream colour but honestly that wasn’t much better. DH and I had a giggle over ‘50 shades of beige’ - Where couples in long term relationships spend entire days comparing every farrow and ball colour that ends in ‘white’, even though they’re all pretty much the same- and nobody has sex, ever...because the kids are ALWAYS there 😂

Hagisonthehill · 16/06/2020 08:27

When I moved into this house it was painted 'dusky plum' and shit brown. It has taken a lot of white paint to cover it.
I then bought a lovely grey sofa, greyish wooden blinds and grey pattern curtains over the glass doors.
That's where it stopped as I haven't ever found a grey carpet that I liked.Thats as far as matching has got.
But the grey phase does seem to be lasting a long time.

madcatladyforever · 16/06/2020 08:32

I loathe grey especially when combined with black. My house looks like a Turkish bazaar. There is rainbow colour everywhere. Rugs, colourful paint, collections of objects, throws. My friend say they can just come in and relax because my house doesn't look like a hotel. Even on the darkest day it feels like sunshine.

TARSCOUT · 16/06/2020 08:33

I thought it was just me. If I see another fence / shed or anything painted grey I may scream.

CoronaIsComing · 16/06/2020 08:40

We’ve just moved into a grey and white new build and I love it. It’s still a work in progress but our bedroom and one spare room has yellow accents, DS’s bedroom has red accents and his bathroom lime green. Our bathroom has teal and the family bathroom has purple (which I don’t like so am going to change). The kitchen has a steely blue which is more of a blend than an accent colour. DH has a wooden desk in his office which looks fine. The living room, dining room and DS’s other room need a splash of colour but I’m not sure what yet.

CoronaIsComing · 16/06/2020 08:40

Grey for babies is ridiculous though!

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/06/2020 08:52

It really depends on the styling. There's a big difference between the rooms that look like they've entirely been fitted out at B&M with dark grey walls and carpet and glitter everywhere and everything brand new, and those that use soft warm pale greys/'greige' as a backdrop but then team this with whites and wood tones, individual furniture pieces and lots of texture etc.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/06/2020 08:53

Those saying they can't find jewel colours though where on earth are you looking? Jewel colours and art deco influence is everywhere in interiors at the moment. Really easy to find.

Pleasenodont · 16/06/2020 08:55

I don’t mind the odd bit of grey but I’ve seen some homes where either the carpet or laminate is grey as are the walls and most of the furniture- that really takes the piss.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/06/2020 08:57

Farrow & Ball-ish soft greys with wooden floors, coloured rugs, non-matchy cushions/curtains/furniture = pretty and chic.
Mrs Hinch-sequel matchy matchy velour and shiny chrome furnishings and laminate or carpeted floors = naff as fuck. I went and looked at her photos after someone mentioned her up thread - ewww!
I have gone off grey after ten years of loving it - though even when very fond of it I ended up picking pale blue for living room and powder blue for bedroom and black and white for kitchen. The bathroom and hall are admittedly grey. I love the bathroom (it has black and white patterned floor tiles and oak bath panel and white tiles around shower and an oak cupboard under the sink to warm up the pale grey walls) but the hall is getting changed as soon as I can get tradesmen in again - it’s too blah.

madcatladyforever · 16/06/2020 09:00

One of my favourite colours at the moment is Farrow and Ball "Ball Green". I've just done my dining room in it.
i use the modern emulsion which is no faff to apply, it really comes alive when the lights are off and the candles are lit, you get a silvery sheen on it like moonlight and it looks lovely with lots of burnt orange accessories.
I've done the ceiling with it too and there is lots of recycled wood furniture which gives a lovely rustic feel to the whole room.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 16/06/2020 09:05

I have a soft, pale grey in my sitting room. Nothing else in there is grey - warm neutral carpet, blue and cream plaid sofas, persian rug with reds and creams, lots of different coloured cushions and bright-toned paintings. Plus it's a south facing room with lots and lots of warm natural light, so it looks really different to the cold, all-grey rooms on the 'gram.

LookOnTheBrightSide1 · 16/06/2020 09:06

Yes, I agree with you I too am a bit sick of grey furnishings, although I looked on DFS website the other day as I need a new sofa and they do have a range of colours but the ones that come up on the first page detailing sofa tend to be grey🙄
They even have some sofas in light pink for a couple of sofa styles!
