Yes we can book hair appointments, nail appointments and banish the roots in a matter of weeks. We can shop today!! We are counting down the days to hotels, restaurants and bars opening. We are breaking out.

We have turned a corner in England people!!

The lockdown is ending at long last - so what are you doing today?

@HowFastIsTooFast

Where I am our non-essential shops opened a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't been into town aside from one trip to the pharmacy back in April. I'm WFH on a vastly reduced salary (so no money to buy anything anyway) and the last 3 months have proved just how little I've missed shopping and just how little we actually need when it really comes down it. I can't see myself shopping for leisure again anytime soon. I'll go to town if I'm desperately in need of something, otherwise I'm just fine as I am Thanks.
Good for you, but if people don't get out and spend, then shops will close for good, and thousands of people will lose their jobs. We've already seen numerous big chains collapse because of COVID, and that doesn't even begin to include the thousands of small business and independent traders who have lost huge amounts of their income.

The economy is already fucked. Let's not fuck it even more.

My daughter has now hit the shops with a friend and having a lovely time 😊

jamandtonic · 15/06/2020 14:03

Considering how many of you are not going shopping (it looks like about 90%), I'm wondering who is out today. At the retail park I drove past about half an hour ago, the queues for the shops were enormous and the car park jammed full.

I don't need to buy anything that much. Not on a Monday lunchtime.

The ones who are out shopping are too busy enjoying themselves to sanctimoniously post on here about the consumerist plebs who can’t keep themselves out of Primark Wink

Musicforsmorks · 15/06/2020 14:05

I only eat pheasant. Will have to walk 1/2 mile to booths though but can’t be arsed. Will prolly visit white company online instead, need new bedding. Not having to go to work can be tiresome. Lying around in bed most days playing with my gadgets really does wear the sheets out. But don’t judge me I have Bigly savings so not a burger munching scrounger!

Did I tell you I am financially ok and really really lucky?
If not, we’ll I am really really lucky my heart breaks for you struggling povs.

I went to hospital for blood tests, my first bus journey in 3 months, and then bought trainers in an outdoor shop, which was almost empty of other customers. It was lovely being in the City, so few people around.

Itisbetter · 15/06/2020 14:07

Working, it’s Monday! I’m not sure how that’s sanctimonious.

You didn’t post about the consumerist plebs who can’t keep out of Primark, did you? In which case the sanctimonious part wasn’t aimed at you Smile
EmbarrassingMama · 15/06/2020 14:09

@understandmenow the shoes I buy for my toddler aren’t ill fitting, thanks for asking. I live in East Dulwich, darling, and there’s a charming shop in Dulwich called Biff where - if you make an appointment - the owner would come to your front garden and give you a number of pairs to try whilst providing fitting information.
Alternatively you can buy a shoe measure (available from Clarks or Start-Rite) or print out a Start-Rite paper shoe measure.

Who’s the judgmental one now..?

as most of us need their salary to be able to afford to go shopping, I really don't know either.

Pigeon -- I'm genuinely glad you found reasons to be cheerful today. Maybe the shops will be Q-free for you (judging by this thread) & bargains will abound. I have to say, though, don't ask a question if you can't handle the answers.

Where do you get that @pigeon999 can't handle the answers. She has responded cheerfully and is (quite rightly) refusing to be brought down by all those who want a sterile risk free existence. (Hint - it isn't possible)

minipie · 15/06/2020 14:12

Lockdown is still alive and well here as my 7 year old still can’t go back to school . She’s in floods of tears about it today.

Workplaces are open, shops have opened, outdoor activities have opened, pubs and bars are going to re open soon but my child who isn’t going to suffer from the virus and may not even transmit it, is not allowed to play with her friends or go back to proper learning.

Sorry I’m a bit fed up about schools as you can tell.

AnotherEmma · 15/06/2020 14:13

My thoughts exactly minipie and I don't even have a school age child, I just feel for them so much.

Grin obviously the sanctimonious part was aimed at those being sanctimonious. Not those saying ‘I’m working’. I’m also working, but as my toddler DS can’t go to nursery and my reception and year 1 children are on reduced hours in school with no wrap around care I have to work 5am-7am then 7pm-11pm, plus weekends.

No. It can in extreme cases be up to 3 weeks, but the average is around 5 days

You've just confirmed what I said. 'Up to 3 weeks'.[/quote]
No it really isn't what you said Grin

I’m in Scotland, where nothing is open, and I am so jealous.

Musicforsmorks · 15/06/2020 14:16

I’m surprised that ‘how we shop’ has suddenly become such a heated and complicated debate. A new one! As a society/culture I wonder why we feel the need to take such divided positions with regard to the most banal, everyday things.

It reminds me of how people used to judge each other relating to issues of religion and morality. A nouveau Puritanism? It’s as if how we ease out of lockdown has become a new and incendiary metaphor for class anxiety and dread. Well, I guess it gives smokers and second homers a rest.

I think we’re all pretty frazzled, myself.

Thewordgame · 15/06/2020 14:17

This made me giggle so much Snowybean

Bluesheep8 · 15/06/2020 14:17

annielizza eh? No thanks, I'd rather not.

Lynda07 · 15/06/2020 14:17

Private - don't be jealous, be safe. Another week or so and Scotland will begin to be liberated. Trust Auntie Nic.

understandmenow · 15/06/2020 14:19

Obviously the opening of non essential shops didn't apply to the grand folk of East Dulwich, they can just bend the rules. Do you know Dominic frightfully well?

It's kind of hard for the "tat" buying people who don't live in East Dulwich to get the shops to offer this absolutely fabulous service, it's just not a service for the plebs is it?

@EmbarrassingMama if you don't like being judged, then don't judge others calling their need to shop as buying "tat".

Are there any "tat" shops in East Dulwich? Or do the locals not allow that type of lower class person to walk the streets there?

Musicforsmorks · 15/06/2020 14:22

No tat on MY high street
& no thugs in our house.

Legoandloldolls · 15/06/2020 14:22

Some parents cant afford to buy everything online. It's a major faff for me unless its dribs and crabs.

I did notice today that even more shops are bordered up in our v middle class town. It's quite sad seeing even more stores going bust.

Legoandloldolls · 15/06/2020 14:23

Drabs not crabs FFS! Cant get crabs online - yet 😂
